Texarkana, Texas Mayor-Elect Steve MayoA former Texarkana, Texas City Councilman has returned to city government, this time as mayor.
Steve Mayo won the mayor's race Saturday night over Benjamin Dennis, his only opponent, by an 82-to-18 percent margin.
After the race, Mayo said he was glad the race was over and was looking forward to getting to work. He said he also looked forward to working with Dennis.
Current Mayor James Bramlett, who's held the office for 10 years, decided not to run for re-election.
In other election news from Saturday night, an almost $267M bond issue proposed by the Longview Independent School District passed by just 14 votes, with 1,552 people approving the measure and 1,532 voting against it.
The money will go toward constructing several new schools and renovating older ones.
Voters in Carthage, Texas decided against allowing the sale of alcohol in its town. A proposal to sell alcohol for off-site consumption and another that would let restaurants serve mixed drinks both failed by a 2-to-1 margin.
