Status effects (状態, Jōtai?, lit. "Status"), orStatus Ailments, are temporary conditions that can affect the attributes or actions of characters or enemies. There are both positive and negative status effects, and they can be either instantaneous or lasting. Status effects are often associated with certainelements; for example, the Jolt status is inflicted by manyThunder element attacks.
The status effect system was formally introduced inKingdom Hearts Chain of Memories. InKingdom Hearts, conditions such asStun andPercentage that would later be status effects are instead classified as elements. There are several techniques in the series that inflict conditions similar status effects but are considered abilities and are not classified as part of the status effect system; examples includeKurt Zisa's Silence ability,Enemy Card effects,License effects, theBarrier Master's Invincibility Barrier technique, and theVanish spell.
The majority of status effects automatically go away over time, but negative status effects can be removed early using thePanacea,Elixir, andMegalixir items or theEsuna command. InKingdom Hearts 358/2 Days, a character's elemental resistance determines their resistance to each status effect, which can be raised by equippingLevel Up orRing Panels. InKingdom Hearts Re:coded,Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance, andKingdom Hearts III status effects can be nullified by equipping certainaccessories, abilities, orarmor respectively. When inflicting a status effect on a target already afflicted with a status effect, the old status effect is replaced by the newer one.

Negative status effects[edit]
Air-toss[edit]
TheAir-toss (吹き上げ, Kukiage?) status effect was introduced inKingdom Hearts 358/2 Days. It causes the victim to fly spinning into the air and slowly descend. While airborne, they are immobilized and unable to recover, and they will also take extra damage if attacked. Air-toss is typically caused byAero-type commands, Wind-type attacks inKingdom Hearts 358/2 Days, and abilities likeAero Block,Aero Finish orAero Counter.
Data-Sora can prevent Air-Toss status effect by equipping theHeavy Chain accessory.
Bind[edit]
TheBind (バインド, Baindo?) status effect was introduced inKingdom Hearts Chain of Memories. It forces the victim to stay in one location, either on the ground or in the air, although they are still capable of performing other actions including walking or running, while standing still, and be pushed around by others. Bind is typically caused by commands likeBind andBinding Strike.
InKingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep Final Mix,No Heart's dark pillar can heavily slow the victim's movement speed down, almost akin to Bind.
InKingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance,Ansem, Seeker of Darkness's Second Form can utilize Dark Matter and Dark Galaxy, which immobilizes Riku's own movement while Ansem pulls him to a certain spot. However, Riku is still able to perform any other action including walking or running during the restrain, similarily to the Bind status effect.
Black Fog[edit]
TheBlack Fog (黒霧, Kokumu?) status effect appears inKingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance, exclusive to Flick Rush. It causes the majority of the Spirit icons on the bottom screen to be covered with a black fog for ten seconds, making it difficult to see. This status effect can only be inflicted by usingDark Mist.
Blind[edit]
TheBlind (暗闇, Kurayami?, lit. "Darkness") status effect was introduced inKingdom Hearts 358/2 Days. It hinders its victim's ability to successfully land attacks. InKingdom Hearts 358/2 Days andKingdom Hearts Re:coded, Blind often causes physical attacks to miss. InKingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep andKingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance, enemies suffering from Blind either attack other enemies or go in the wrong direction; playable characters suffering from Blind have a reduced field of vision, and only the area immediately around them is visible. InKingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance the Menu cannot be accessed if the player character is affected while outside the battle.Lock-On andShotlocks are also disabled.Dark-type commands,Blackout, and Flower-type attacks inKingdom Hearts 358/2 Days are able to cause Blind.
Burn[edit]
TheBurn (バーン, Bān?) status effect appears inKingdom Hearts III. It causes the victim's rear to catch fire, causing them to forcibly jump forwards multiple times, after which the victim is stationary for a couple seconds as they put out the fire. Each jump from the second onward causes the victim to lose 5% HP, however this cannot bring the victim's HP below 1.
Clock Rewind[edit]
TheClock Rewind (クロックレベル1, Kurokku Reberu 1?, lit. "Clock Level 1") status effect appears inKingdom Hearts Re:coded. It resets Data-Sora's clock gauge to level 1 and prevents it from being filled.
Cloud[edit]
TheCloud (クラウド, Kuraudo?) status effect appears inKingdom Hearts III. It causes a cloud to appear over the victim's head, which causes commands to briefly be replaced by cloud commands in multiple states. The cloud can appear in either the state of heavy rain (3 seconds), no rain (3 seconds), or light rain (4 seconds), with the status sequentially changing between these three in said order. During heavy and light rain, Sora's commands will change to Lightning in top-to-bottom sequential order, with heavy rain adding two Lightning commands that change positions rapidly, light rain adding one that changes positions slowly, and no rain causing no harmful effects. Selecting a Lightning command will cause lightning to flinch Sora. Among other means, Sora can dispel the status effect by usingAero magic.
In the case of party members, the lightning will cause them to flinch every 0.5 seconds during heavy and light rain.
Command Lock[edit]
TheCommand Lock (コマンド禁止, Komando Kinshi?, lit. "Command Ban") status effect, calledCommand Seal (コマンド封印, Komando Fūin?) inKingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance, was introduced inKingdom Hearts Re:coded. It prevents the player from using any commands, similar toSilence. InKingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance, Command Seal can be used byStaggerceps Nightmares.
Data-Sora can prevent Command Lock status effect by equipping theLiberty Crown accessory.
Confuse[edit]
TheConfuse (混乱「コンフュ」, Konran/Konfyu?) status effect was introduced inKingdom Hearts Chain of Memories. A confused enemy will attack other enemies, or otherwise act in support of the player, e.g., theVile Phial will heal the player when confused. A confused character will have their movement controls reversed. Confuse is typically inflicted by commands likeConfuse andConfusion Strike, certain room gimmicks inKingdom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories, being attacked by enemies like theMandrake, being attacked while affected byZero Gravity.
InKingdom Hearts Re:coded, only enemies can be inflicted with Confuse; Data-Sora can instead be inflicted with theFlip-foot status, which has a similar effect to Confuse.
Damage Drain[edit]
TheDamage Drain (ダメージ吸収, Damēji Kyūshū?, lit. "Damage Absorption") status effect appears inKingdom Hearts 358/2 Days. When struck with an attack inflicting Damage Drain, the character's HP damage is absorbed by the attacking enemy, healing them. Damage Drain is inflicted by Water-type attacks.
Defense Cut[edit]
TheDefense Cut (防御ダウン, Bōgyo Daun?, lit. "Defense Down") status effect appears inKingdom Hearts Re:coded. It cuts down Data-Sora's Defense, causing him to take more damage from enemy attacks.
Doom[edit]
Doom (デス, Desu?, lit. "Death") appears as a status effect inKingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep.
It automatically knocks out the victim independently of their HP after a 5 seconds indicated by a counter overhead. It is inflicted by theDark Haze command and theUnknown's Doom web attack, which traps the protagonist and can be negated by tapping quickly enough[?] within four seconds. His subsequent uses of the technique makes the starting count lower. It is also inflicted to oneself by using theWrath of Darkness command for the 4th and subsequent times.
TheTime Bomb status effect uses a similar countdown.
In other games, some enemies use techniques that have effects that are similar to the Doom status effect.
InKingdom Hearts,Doom (死の宣告, Shi no Senkoku?, lit. "Death Sentence") is casted by thePhantom, is tied to the minute hand of theClock Tower, and can be delayed by castingStop on the clock face. InKingdom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories,Marluxia's third form uses Doom as sleight that must be broken by breaking a series of the opponent's cards similar to Card Duels.
In addition, Marluxia's Absent Silhouette and Replica Data inKingdom Hearts II Final Mix inflict Sora with an overhead counter at the start of each battle. This countdown starts at Sora'slevel and is reduced by one each time Sora is hit by theGraceful Dahlia, although it can be refilled using theRestore Count reaction command.
Marluxia's data inKingdom Hearts III Re Mind uses an overhead count technique similar to the Doom status effect, first about midway through the battle and second when he is at 1 HP. In the former case, the timer starts at 15 and decreases slowly. Marluxia's Armor HP must be depleted and then the Dispel Situation Command must be used to remove of the countdown. In the latter case, the timer starts at 99 and decreases rapidly, and Marluxia must be defeated to remove it.
Electrify[edit]
TheElectrify (帯電, Taiden?, lit. "Electrification") status effect, also calledJolt, was introduced inKingdom Hearts 358/2 Days. It electrifies the victim, causing them to take damage—up to 10% of their maximum HP inKingdom Hearts 358/2 Days and up to 12.5% inKingdom Hearts Re:coded—when coming into contact with enemies, other party members, or even walls or other objects. It is typically caused byThunder-type commands and attacks, and abilities likeThunder Finish andThunder Counter. InKingdom Hearts III, Electrify causes the victim to discharge electricity when making contact with an ally, causing everyone involved to lose 20% HP and ending the status effect. When enemies (with the exception of theWater Core) are inflicted with this status effect, they will stop attacking. Party members's HP cannot drop below 1, however enemies can be defeated from the discharge.
A variation of Jolt can be inflicted onUndead Pirates,Captain Barbossa, and theGrim Reaper, by attacking withThunder. It causes them to move slowly and jerkily, but it does not inflict damage.
A similar effect can be inflicted onMaleficent's Goons inKingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep, causing them to run around faster and suffer damage, an allusion to their punishment for failing to find Princess Aurora in the original movie.
Flip-foot[edit]
TheFlip-foot (移動異常, Idō Ijō?, lit. "Movement Disorder") status effect was introduced inKingdom Hearts 358/2 Days. While under Flip-foot, movement controls are reversed, similar toConfuse. Additionally, it prevents Roxas and Data-Sora from automatically directing attacks at enemies. InKingdom Hearts Re:Coded, it also prevents Data-Roxas from locking-on to the enemies. InKingdom Hearts 358/2 Days, Flip-foot is inflicted by Illusion-type attacks.
Data-Sora can prevent Flip-Foot status effect by equipping theCompass accessory.
Freeze[edit]
Freeze (凍結「フリーズ」, Tōketsu/Furīzu?) was introduced as a status effect inKingdom Hearts Chain of Memories. It encases the victim in a solid block of ice, immobilizing them and causing them to take more damage if attacked while frozen[?]. InKingdom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories, enemies that are hit by Sora's attacks while frozen are unfrozen after taking extra damage equivalent to an attack with a x10.0 power multiplier. It is typically caused byBlizzard-type and Ice-type commands and attacks, and abilities likeBlizzard Finish andBlizzard Counter. Airborne targets of Freeze will drop to the ground for as long as they are frozen.
Data-Sora can prevent the Freeze status effect by equipping theBlizzard Charm accessory.
InKingdom Hearts III, Freeze immobilizes the victim as usual, but it has no effect on the damage the victim takes, and will end when the victim is attacked. It also disables safeguards, meaning that enemies such as theLarge Body can be attacked from points where they would normally be invulnerable while frozen.
InKingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance, a variation ofFreeze (氷結, Hyōketsu?), exclusive to Flick Rush, covers the bottom screen in ice. No commands can be used while the screen is covered in ice, but the ice can be cleared by tapping the screen twenty times. This status effect can only be inflicted by usingIce Zone.
In other games, some techniques have effects that are similar to the Freeze status effect.
InKingdom Hearts, theIce Titan's Diamond Dust attack freezes the opponent.
InKingdom Hearts II, enemies such asUndead Pirates,Captain Barbossa, and theGrim Reaper, can be left frozen by attacking withBlizzard. It immobilizes them for a few moments. Additionally, theFortuneteller's Frozen Verdict attack, Vexen's Absolute Zero and Icy Ensemble, andBlizzard Lord's Freeze attack can freeze opponents.

Honey[edit]
TheHoney (ハニー, Hanī?) status effect appears inKingdom Hearts III. It slows the enemy's movement and attack speed. The honey status effect can be stacked, with each attack applying honey increasing the percentage at which the enemy is slowed, up to a maximum of a 90% slowdown. Honey is inflicted by attacks from theHunny Blasters andHunny LauncherFormchanges.

TheIgnite (炎上「バーン」, Enjō/Bān?, lit. "Burn") status effect was introduced inKingdom Hearts 358/2 Days. It engulfs the victim in flames, dealing continuous damage to their HP. It is typically caused byFire-type commands and attacks, and abilities likeFire Finish andFire Counter.
A variation of Ignite can be inflicted onUndead Pirates,Captain Barbossa, and theGrim Reaper, by attacking withFire. It causes them to run around in a frenzied state, but it does not inflict damage. In the Japanese release, the pirates are depicted as being on fire, while in the international release, they are merely shown to be smoking. A similar effect can be inflicted onMaleficent's Goons inKingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep, as well asMeow Wow,Meowjesty,Sir Kyroo andLord Kyroo inKingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance, which are depicted as being on fire in all versions of the game.
Leech HP[edit]
TheLeech HP orHP Break status effect appears inKingdom Hearts III Re Mind. The victim gets their max HP cut to the amount they are reduced to after taking the hit that inflicts the status. Leech HP is inflicted byXion's Recreated Data's lasers,Master Xehanort Recreated Data's double-blade attack, andYozora's charged slash attack.
Magnet[edit]

InKingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance,Ansem, Seeker of Darkness's Second Form can utilize Dark Matter and Dark Galaxy, which immobilizes Riku's and his Dream Eaters's own movements. While his Dream Eaters are pulled to a certain spot by Ansem, they are not able to perform any action, similarily to the Magnet status effect.
Mini[edit]
TheMini (ミニマム, Minimamu?, lit. "Minimum") status effect appears inKingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep andKingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance. It shrinks the victim, decreasing their attack power and making them vulnerable to being stepped on. Mini is inflicted by theMini magic command.
InKingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance, due to the fact Mini isn't used by Dream Eaters with Type I disposition, no Nightmare Dream Eater can use Mini, therefore Sora and Riku cannot be targets of a Mini spell unless one of their own Spirits under the Confusion status casts Mini on them.
Null Defense[edit]
TheNull Defense (防御力無効化, Bōgyo-ryoku Mukō-ka?, lit. "Defense Disable") status effect appears inKingdom Hearts 358/2 Days. An attack with the Null Defense status effect inflicts damage without regard to the victim's defense. Null Defense is inflicted by Nil-type attacks.
Paralysis[edit]
TheParalysis (麻痺, Mahi?) status effect appears inKingdom Hearts Union χ andKingdom Hearts Dark Road. It paralyzes the victim and prevents them from selecting certain cards from the hand.

TheRewound Defense (防御LV.1, Bōgyo LV.1?, lit. "Defense LV.1") status effect appears inKingdom Hearts 358/2 Days. It sets the victim's Defense back to its Level 1 state, increasing the damage taken while the status is in effect. Rewound Defense is inflicted by Time-type attacks.
Shock[edit]
TheShock (感電, Kanden?) status effect appears inKingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance, exclusive to Flick Rush. It causes the Spirit icons on the bottom screen to be charged with electricity for ten seconds. While charged with electricity, the Spirits cannot be switched out and cards cannot be reloaded. This status effect can only be inflicted by using the evolved command,Thundaga.

Causing preemptive strikes will stun enemies at the start of the battle and the stun effect can be enhanced with theLasting Daze map card. Riku, while in Dark Mode, can also stun enemies with the second strike of his combo, so long as Riku'sAP is high enough.
InKingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep, failing to completeSurprise! 1 and Surprise! 2 successfully results in the user becoming stunned.
InKingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance, having Riku destroy theHockomonkey's Magic Hands as well as making it stagger, or bring theArmored Ventus Nightmare's HP to 1 withNightmare Clash result in the enemy getting stunned.
