TheMaster's Defender is the default form ofBrain'sKeyblade that appears inKingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep,Kingdom Hearts 0.2 Birth by Sleep -A fragmentary passage-,Kingdom Hearts III, andKingdom Hearts Union χ. It is passed on toEphemer and eventually toEraqus and his pupil,Aqua, and is briefly wielded bySora. A digital simulation of the Keyblade is wielded byArmor of Eraqus, while an illusory copy is wielded by thephantom Aqua.

Story[edit]

Kingdom Hearts Union χ[Cross][edit]

Similar to theNo Name, the Master's Defender is an ancient Keyblade from the "age of fairy-tales." It is given to Brain byAva. Brain rarely wields it in combat, only doing so against the Darkness entity.

Before returning to the real world in the lifeboat, Brain passes down the Master's Defender and theBook of Prophecies to Ephemer by claiming Ava intended their owners to be Ephemer from the start. Later, after fightingPlayer, Ephemer uses the lifeboat to return to the real world, eventually foundingScala ad Caelum over the remains ofDaybreak Town. By the time ofBrain's arrival, the city has a statue of Ephemer with the Master's Defender.

BetweenKingdom Hearts Union χ[Cross] andKingdom Hearts Dark Road[edit]

Over the years, the Master's Defender was passed down from generations of Keyblade wielders.

Kingdom Hearts Dark Road[edit]

DuringXehanort and Eraqus's apprenticeship atScala ad Caelum, the Master's Defender was wielded by their Keyblade Master,Odin. Eventually, Eraqus inherited the Master's Defender and theLand of Departure's stewardship after passing his Mark of Mastery exam. WhenXehanort leftScala ad Caelum, Eraqus battled him with Master's Defender.

Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep[edit]

Like his erstwhile friendXehanort, Master Eraqus rarely draws his Keyblade. When he does fight, he is able to use the Keyblade to channel his own light magic. However, even after Master Eraqus is slain by Xehanort's hand and theLand of Departure is devoured by darkness, his Keyblade remains. After the defeat ofVanitas, Aqua takes a comatose Ventus back to the Land of Departure, where they find Eraqus's Keyblade. Following Eraqus's prior instructions, Aqua uses the Keyblade to transform the world intoCastle Oblivion, a labyrinth which can only be fully navigated by herself, and hidesVentus's body within. Although Aqua keeps this Keyblade, she does not actually wield it until after battlingTerra-Xehanort and sacrificing herStormfall Keyblade to save the remnants of Terra within him.

Kingdom Hearts 0.2 Birth by Sleep -A fragmentary passage-[edit]

Aqua continues to wield her master's Keyblade as she advances through theRealm of Darkness. During her journey, she encounters a phantom of herself, who wields an illusory copy of the Master's Defender.

After theDoor to Darkness is sealed and Aqua witnesses the worlds being restored, the Master's Defender falls away from her.

Kingdom Hearts III[edit]

Sora picks up the Master's Defender.

Aqua is defenseless againstAnsem, Seeker of Darkness without the Master's Defender, and is corrupted with Xehanort's darkness. The Master's Defender ends up on the shores of theDestiny Islands, whereSora finds it and uses it to open a door to the Realm of Darkness. After Sora frees Aqua from the darkness, she resumes wielding the Master's Defender, first using it to transformCastle Oblivion back into theLand of Departure and wielding it during the clash between light and darkness.

After Xehanort's defeat, Terra, Ventus, and Aqua return to the Land of Departure and use the Master's Defender, with their Wayfinders placed on it, to honor Eraqus as a grave marker.

Design[edit]

The Master's Defender has a smooth, cylindrical, grey shaft that tapers outward at both ends. It has a boxy guard, made up of two small, light grey boxes and a copper rod. The base of the guard connects to the grip, and both sport several small indentations lining them. The grip itself is somewhat unique in that, while most Keyblade grips are cylindrical, the Master's Defender's grip is squared. The teeth are in the shape of an "E". The "E"-shaped teeth and the square grip is likely an allusion to "Square-Enix", which Eraqus's name also references. ItsKeychain is made of several simple chain links and its token is theTerra's Mark symbol that appears on Eraqus's, Ventus's,Terra's, and Aqua's clothing.

The Keyblade's name reflects that it is used primarily by Keyblade Masters. "Defender" and "Keeper" may reference its use by Keyblade Masters to guard the Land of Departure. TheDefender is also a recurring weapon in theFinal Fantasy series.
