Light Cycle Gameplay
The Light Cycle mini-game inKingdom Hearts II.

TheLight Cycle (ライトサイクル, Raito Saikuru?) is a mini-game inKingdom Hearts II andKingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance. It is based on theLight Cycle game from the Disney filmsTron andTron: Legacy.

Story[edit]

Kingdom Hearts II[edit]

AfterGoofy fiddles around with the computer in the holding cell inSpace Paranoids,Sora is forced to participate in the Light Cycle races. Before the race starts, aDevastator blasts a hole in the wall, and so during the race, Sora fends offMagnum Loaders to reach the exit.

Light Cycle Gameplay

After getting captured by a Recognizer and meetingSam Flynn,Riku is forced byCLU to play a round of Light Cycle. After derezzing numerous Guards, theCommantis appears, which Riku battles. The Dream Eater flees after its defeat, while a fed-up Riku blasts a heart-shaped hole in the stadium wall and escapes, eventually reuniting with Sam.

Other appearances[edit]

Kingdom Hearts II manga[edit]

A Light Cycle makes a cameo appearance while Sora and his friends look for a required piece of data that is necessary to turn on the power and escape, with Donald playing on it.

Design[edit]

Sora's Space Paranoids Light Cycle is based on (and very similar to) the redesigned Light Cycles from the PC gameTron 2.0. While the Light Cycles in the original film were shorter in length and had a canopy covering the rider, Sora's is longer, with a "floating" front wheel and a design somewhat more reminiscent of real-world motorbikes. It also lacks the canopy of the original Light Cycles, leaving Sora exposed but able to attack enemies. Additionally, Sora's Light Cycle is blue, matching his circuitry; in the original film, Flynn, Tron, and Ram respectively ride yellow, orange, and red Light Cycles while the ones ridden by the enemy team are blue.

The Light Cycles in The Grid are nearly identical to the ones fromTron: Legacy, being black vehicles that more closely resemble real-world motorbikes than their Space Paranoids counterparts. The interior of the wheels and the decals on their sides and driving seat are covered in circuitry that matches the driver's; the Black Guards' Light Cycles are covered in orange circuitry, while Riku's is covered in light blue circuitry. Like their film counterparts, these Light Cycles generate a ribbon of light matching the cycle's circuitry color that can derez opponents behind the user. Riku's Light Cycle is also equipped with two turrets that resemble Identity Disks. These turrets rest on the back wheels when on standby and float near the front wheels when active.

Kevin Flynn owns a personal Light Cycle that bears a stronger resemblance to the Light Cycles from the originalTron, complete with a canopy. It is predominantly white with black highlights. The number 786 is printed in red in front of the back wheel. Flynn's Light Cycle is only visible inside his personal hideout, and it has never been seen in action.

Controls[edit]

Kingdom Hearts II[edit]

The Light Cycle mini-game operates under a rock-paper-scissors-esque attack system. Attacks intercept Charges, which break through Guards, which block Attacks. If Sora drives into a wall, he will take damage. Driving into pillars around the course does not damage Sora, but it merely stuns him. Using Guard while driving into those pillars protects him from the stun.

  • CircleGuard (ガード, Gādo?): Spins the Light Cycle around while cloaked in a green barrier. It protects from Attack, but is ineffective against Charge.
  • SquareCharge (チャージ, Chāji?): Charges up the Light Cycle and then smashes the nearest target. It breaks through Guard, but is vulnerable to Attack.
  • XAttack (アタック, Atakku?): Throws theKeyblade to the side, attacking enemies. It can be used against Charge, but is weak against Guard.
  • Left Stick: Move left or right.
  • L1 /L2: Turns the bike left. Only usable when LEFT appears on screen.
  • R1 /R2: Turns the bike right. Only usable when RIGHT appears on screen.

Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance[edit]

The Light Cycle controls are much simpler here than inKingdom Hearts II, and consist of:

  • YChange Mode (モードチェンジ, Mōdo Chenji?, lit. "Mode Change"): Riku switches weapons between the ribbon and turrets. Switching to the ribbon grants a brief speed boost.
  • BJump (ジャンプ, Janpu?): Jumps with the Light Cycle, dodging enemy attacks.
  • AAssault Shot (アサルトショット, Asaruto Shotto?): Fires projectiles at enemies in front. Only usable when the turrets are active.
  • Circle Pad: Move left or right.

Strategy[edit]

Kingdom Hearts II[edit]

The ultimate goal of the Light Cycle mini-game is to destroy 30 Heartless.

Obstacles
  • Magnum Loader: Magnum Loaders come in four different varieties. The color scheme corresponds to the Magnum Loader's actions:
    • Blue Magnum Loaders attack with Spin. Sora can defend their attacks with Guard.
    • Green Magnum Loaders can shield themselves with a green barrier. Sora can break their guards with Charge.
    • Yellow Magnum Loaders use Somersault as a charge attack. Sora can intercept their charges with Attack.
    • White Magnum Loaders can use attacks, guards, and charges. Sora must observe their actions and counter with the appropriate command.
  • Devastator: Found only in the exit of the mini-game and will shoot at Sora. If Sora guards at the right moment, their projectiles will bounce off and hit themselves instead, protecting Sora while defeating them at the same time.

The first time Riku participates in the Light Cycle, he is required to play until theCommantis appears. A variety of enemies appear to try to stop him.

Afterward, Riku can return to the Light Cycle track in order to play the mini-game version. Here, he attempts to take down as many opponents as possible to obtain points. Clearing it again for the first time rewards him with aFleeting Fantasy, a Fleeting Fancy for the second time, and a Fleeting Figment for the third and subsequent times.

Obstacles
  • Guards ride Light Cycles and try to damage Riku with their light ribbons. They can be destroyed with Riku's ribbon or turrets.
  • Flying Guards fly along the track and attack Riku with bombs. They can be shot down with Riku's turrets.
  • Recognizers are indestructible, and shoot a single laser down the middle of the track before flying away.
