Design[edit]
The Large Rice Cake and its variant, theRound Rice Cake, are based onkagami mochi, a Japanese New Year's decoration consisting of two roundmochi or rice cakes. A smallermochi would be placed on top of a largermochi, symbolizing yin and yang, the going and coming years, the human heart, and the moon and the sun. On top of these mochi, adaidai, or Japanese bitter orange, would be placed, to symbolize the continuity of a family from generation to generation. It would be stood on asanpō, or stand, over a sheet calledshihōbeni, which is believed to ward off fires from the house for the years to come.
The Large Rice Cake's body appears to be made of a combination of the aforementioned smaller and largermochi, and its head appears to be made ofmochi as well. There is a red ribbon in the middle of the largermochi. On top of its head is the above-mentioned bitter orange. A black stalk appears to be growing out of that orange, and behind it is a red and white fan with a light orange rim and yellow tassels. Behind its body is anobi in shades of red, yellow and orange, tied in a bow.
At the bottom of the Large Rice Cake's body are two green leaves, and below these is a whiteshihōbeni with a red border. It stands on a brown, woodensanpō.
