Story[edit]
- "Believing light and darkness must remain in balance, Master Xehanort seeks to spark war against the 'tyranny of light' to restore equilibrium.
In an effort to undermine Xehanort's plot, Sora, Donald and Goofy search for seven guardians of light and the 'Key to Return Hearts,' while King Mickey and Riku search for previous Keyblade wielders." - —Kingdom Hearts III press release
AfterMaster Xehanort's return,Yen Sid begins searching for sevenGuardians of Light to counter Xehanort's plan to forge theχ-blade through a newKeyblade War. Yen Sid advises Sora to search for a way to regain the "Power of waking", the ability to restore lost hearts that he lost when failing theMark of Mastery exam. Meanwhile,Riku andKing Mickey traverse theDark World looking forAqua, whileKairi andLea train underMerlin's guidance.
During their respective searches, Sora and Riku are contacted byIenzo, who has deciphered pieces of Ansem the Wise'scode to learn that Sora's body contains the hearts ofRoxas,Ventus, andXion. Riku realizes that the Organization's members from the past are usingreplicas as vessels that enable their existence in the present, which inspires Sora to restore Roxas by transferring hisheart into a replica body. However, the group is lacking replicas or the ability to create them, asVexen, the sole person with this ability, has seemingly rejoined Organization XIII.
As Sora searches through various worlds for the power of waking and for ways to restore Roxas, he is antagonized by members of a reformedOrganization XIII, comprising of past allies of Xehanort restored using replicas. Among them,Xigbar,Ansem, Seeker of Darkness,Xemnas,Young Xehanort andDark Riku (a past version of Riku when he was possessed by Ansem, Seeker of Darkness), with other restored members such asSaïx andDemyx having joined as well. The Organization seeks to substitute the Guardians of Light with newPrincesses of Heart, and dispatches its members in various worlds to search for princess candidates and exploit knowledge from each world, resurrectingVanitas in the process. Later, the Organization falsely informs Sora's group that it has found all its thirteen members, enough to proceed with a Keyblade War.
Meanwhile, Ansem, Seeker of Darkness captures Ansem the Wise, avoiding Aqua's attempt to stop him and forcing her to succumb to the darkness. However, the capture is foiled by Vexen, who reveals himself as a double agent working with Saïx. After the rescue, Vexen gives Demyx an extra replica to deliver to Ienzo, in order to restore Roxas with it.
Eventually, Riku and Mickey locate Aqua in Dark World, but are overpowered by her corrupted form. All three are rescued by Sora, who, using theMaster's Defender found onDestiny Islands, used it to enter the Dark World. Sora, Donald, and Goofy then follow Aqua toCastle Oblivion, which she transforms back into theLand of Departure to awaken Ventus. When she is attacked by Vanitas, Sora rediscovers his power of waking and awakens Ventus, who fights Vanitas off.
With seven Guardians of Light finally found, and with the Organization having seemingly found all its thirteen members, all depart for theKeyblade Graveyard to battle them and prevent the princesses from being directly attacked. However, they are defeated by a newly resurrectedTerra-Xehanort, and then submerged by a swarm ofHeartless. Awakening in a limbo realm calledThe Final World, Sora meets with a disembodiedNaminé, who has attempted to callTerra'sLingering Will for help. Guided back to the realm of light with the help of Kairi andChirithy, Sora then uses the power of waking to revive his friends. However, Young Xehanort warns that abusing this power will result in him losing his heart again.
Returning moments before their defeat, the guardians are saved from a repeat demise by Terra's Lingering Will and Yen Sid, and proceed to defeat most of the Organization's members. In the process, Dark Riku is defeated and his replica body is taken to be used to revive Naminé. Terra regains control of his body with the help of Sora, defeating Terra-Xehanort in the process, and he reunites with Aqua and Ventus.
Later, some of the guardians are incapacitated by two more darknesses: Saïx, and a resurrected but amnesiac Xion. Xemnas forces Xion to eliminate Lea, but she regains her memories upon contact with him, paving the way for Roxas's heart to awaken; this completes his restoration, in time to rescue the guardians. However, Xemnas leaves with Kairi in tow, although he is eventually defeated as well.
When only Master Xehanort remains, he provokes Sora into attacking him by killing Kairi, allowing Xehanort to acquire the χ-blade and summonKingdom Hearts. Using Xehanort's power of time travel against him, Sora, Donald, and Goofy transport him to his past inScala ad Caelum, where they fatally injure him. After the other guardians rejoin them,Eraqus's spirit, having being dormant in Terra's heart, emerges and convinces Xehanort to surrender before he dies. Xehanort and Eraqus depart together to Kingdom Hearts, while Sora and his friends use the χ-blade to close Kingdom Hearts and return to their own time.
Trying to retrieve Kairi, Sora uses the power of waking again to revive her; despite the risk of becoming lost forever, Sora promises to return. Afterwards, Ventus reunites with Chirithy; Roxas, Lea, and Xion reunite withIsa, and Naminé is restored in a replica obtained from Dark Riku. Sora's friends gather at the Destiny Islands, where Kairi stays beside Sora as he fades away; his punishment for abusing the power of waking.
Xigbar, who survived the Keyblade War, retrieves Xehanort's Keyblade and theBlack Box, and summons four of the fiveforetellers, revealing himself to their fellow apprentice,Luxu. He begins to recount his actions to the foretellers, withMaleficent andPete watching from afar.
In a flashback to their youth, Eraqus and Xehanort begin a new game ofAlba & Ater, starting a battle between seven dark pieces and a single white piece.
Gameplay[edit]
Growth path[edit]
The player can choose their growth path in theDive to the Heart. The first set of options are Wisdom, Vitality, and Balance, giving large initial bonuses for HP, for MP, or for HP and MP equally with lesser gains, repectively.
The second set of options are Guardian, Warrior, and Mystic, which select abilities gained by leveling up Sora, with the first being focused on Defense, the second on Attack, and the third on Magic.
Combat features[edit]
TheCommand Menu, the "MP" gauge and the MP Charge system return fromKingdom Hearts II. TheFocus gauge fromBirth by Sleep also returns, used forShotlocks which are now tied to equippedKeychains.
Shortcuts also return, functioning similar toKingdom Hearts 0.2 Birth by Sleep -A fragmentary passage, with three different customizable sets of shortcuts configurations.
Reaction Commands from earlier games are are replaced bySituation Commands and theSituation Command Meter. Successfully landing attacks on enemies increase the Situation Command Meter, which, when filled up, unlocks powerful Situation Commands to use in combat.
Formchange is a new mechanic unlocked by Situation Commands. It that allows Sora to transform his Keyblade into a variety of weapons and to change hisabilities, combos, and magic, similar toDrive Forms andCommand Styles.
Sora can now equip up to three Keychains for his Keyblade, and can switch between them on the fly by pressing
or
while the cursor is on theAttack command, suspending any active Formchange. This allows the player to use up to three different Formchanges in combat (apart from Rage Form), but also to hot-swap abilities and stats attached to different Keychains, and to mix and match combo attacks from different Formchanges by swapping Keychains mid-combo.
Similar toKingdom Hearts 0.2 Birth by Sleep -A fragmentary passage-, magic affects the surrounding environment—for example,Blizzard will create a sheet of ice to slide on andAero will move the grass with a wind vortex that can be used to jump higher. If the player uses enoughmagic, they can unlock correspondingGrand Magic spells through Situation Commands. For example, usingFire repeatedly can allow him to use Fira as a Situation Command.
Attractions, another type of Situation Command, are a new feature which lets theparty execute skills based on theme park attractions. An attraction sequence can be skipped by pressing
or
, or turned off completely from the Options menu.
Characters join the player's team as temporary party members. Compared to earlier games, the maximum number of party members has been increased from 3 to 5, eliminating the need to swap or replace allies. Their AI has been improved, with allies able to invite the player intoTeam Attacks (similar toLimits inKingdom Hearts II) through Situation Commands. The player also has the option to configure their combat behavior more finely, such as by defining for each ally the allowed targets of recovery items and healing spells.
Character portraits on the HUD are more expressive, no longer being fixed for party members. Like the player's, they smile when they're on the overworld, appear angry when fighting, have a pained expression when they take damage and look tired when their HP are low. If a teammate has lost all their HP, their eyes will close and their portrait will be darkened.
TheLink Summon system revamps theSummon system from earlier games. It comprises of five techniques that replaces all allies on the field with a given character, enacting a powerful technique similar to Team Attacks. This system comprises Ariel's "Lagoon Showtime", Ralph's "8 Bit Blast", Simba's "Kingsflare", Meow Wow's "Wonder Balloon", and Stitch's "Plasma Encounter". Summoning sequence can be skipped by pressing
or
, or turned off completely from the Options menu, and can be equipped as shortcuts.
Flowmotion returns fromKingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance with minor revisions. Flowmotion can now only be triggered through most aerial evasion techniques such asAir Slide, with contextual attack actions being replaced, and infiniteSuperjumps being removed. Additionally, certain Formchanges also have their own Flowmotion attacks.
In addition to Sora, Riku and Aqua are playable during a few mandatory story fights, albeit with a reduced amount of combat mechanics.
In combat, some enemies are able to work together, carry each other, or be subject to friendly fire. Some enemies also have "Armor" Mode, during which theirHP gauge is replaced a separate Armor gauge. Enemies in Armor Mode use powerful attacks until the party deals enough damage to end it, or when time passes. New toKingdom Hearts III, player and party member attacks deal fixed damage to enemies in Armor Mode, independent of their individual stats.
Exploration[edit]
Worlds inKingdom Hearts III consists larger explorable areas with less loading screens, with a large emphasis on vertical map design and platforming. Alongside traditional treasure chests, items such as food ingredients, equippable items and synthesis items can be collected from interactive props in the worlds. Additionally, urbanized areas such as the City ofSan Fransokyo are furthermore populated by groups of non-playable characters, with some reacting to Sora's actions or being able to reward the player with items.
Textboxes when talking to NPCs are removed. All dialogue in the game is now voiced, with additional, on-the-fly dialogue occurring automatically in the field or in combat between party members.
Free Running returns fromKingdom Hearts 0.2 Birth by Sleep -A fragmentary passage-, allowing Sora to run up wall and to automatically run or jump over small obstacles without additional input. Additionally, Sora can use the newAirstepping mechanic, allowing him to zip towards a target (enemy or object) quickly.
In theThe Caribbean, Sora has his ownship, with dedicated level up upgrades. The player can sail the seas, fight enemy ships and explore various small islands.
Similar toKingdom Hearts 0.2 Birth by Sleep -A fragmentary passage-, the player can now instantly teleport betweensave points in worlds instead of going to the world map.
Other features[edit]
Sora has a smartphone calledGummiphone, which can take pictures of the environment, selfies, and photographLucky Emblems (hidden Mickeys). The Gummiphone also acts as a diegetic information database on the game (replacingJiminy's Journal and other similar reports), including information on enemies, character portraits, game records, and story and lore summaries.
The party's stats and abilities can be enhanced through theCuisine system. By choosing a number of food dishes to consume, the party can boost its stats for a set duration of time, and gain a bonus ability that depends on the quality of the dishes.
The game contains newmini-games, such as a cooking mini-game in Twilight Town, and harvesting mini-games in the 100 Acre Wood. Several of these mini-games are tied to the Cuisine system as a mean to obtain certain cooking ingredients, or to cook food dishes using said ingredients. Other mini-games leverage other gameplay mechanics, such as platforming, Magic spells, Team Attacks, Attractions, Flowmotion, Airstepping, etc.
Returning fromKingdom Hearts Union χ are theClassic Kingdom mini-games, playable through the Gummiphone and collected mainly throughtreasure chests.
Upgrades to Keychains return fromKingdom Hearts χ. Keychains canlevel up with stronger stats and new abilities through upgrades with materials in theKeyblade Forge.
Battlegates are a post-game set of mini-game battle, loosely based on similar mechanics fromKingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance. Mostly unlocked after completing the main story, they consist of hordes of various enemies to defeat in various areas of the worlds. Completing these fights unlockSecret Reports and additional selfies poses in the Gummiphone.
TheGummi Ship returns with different mechanics. Similar to general room mechanics inKingdom Hearts Chain of Memories, fixed shooter sequences are now solely used for battles against enemies, initiated by engaging combat with enemies roaming open areas. These open world maps are populated with treasures, interactive areas, constellations to photograph using the Gummiphone, and other objectives to fulfill.
Theater Mode is now unlocked by completing Olympus. Unlike previous games, cutscenes are now unlocked by completing each world, rather than having to complete the game itself.
The amount of Lucky Emblems photographed is tied to unlocking the Secret Ending. For example, on Beginner, the player must photograph all of them, but on Proud, the player only needs to photograph 30 of them.[32]
As with the compilation titles, there is a Streaming Restriction guideline, called "Before You Stream...", which can be viewed by pressing
or
on the title menu on PlayStation and Xbox releases, respectively. On Xbox releases, pressing
also allows the player to change game profiles.
PC releases come with additional options, accessible by pressing ESC (for the Epic Games release), or alternatively
or
(for the Steam release). This includes the option to change the text and voice language, key bindings for keyboard, mouse and gamepad, graphical quality, display resolution, refresh rate, framerate cap, etc.
