Kingdom Hearts III
Pirates: Curse of the Black Pearl (2003)

A legendary pirate, and captain of the Black Pearl. We know Jack well from our past adventures.

After we parted ways, Jack was devoured by the Kraken and sent to Davy Jones' Locker, where our paths crossed again.
"Captain Jack Sparrow, if you please."
—Jack Sparrow

CaptainJack Sparrow is a crafty and potentially dangerous pirate who inhabitsPort Royal. After being freed from jail byWilliam Turner, he sets off to reclaim his stolen ship, theBlack Pearl, which was taken over byCaptain Barbossa.

Upon meetingSora, Jack becomes available as aparty member, and fights alongside him during both Port Royal visits. He eventually falls under the curse of the medallions, and has to break free from its spell. He made his first appearance in Disney'sPirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl.

Story[edit]

BeforeKingdom Hearts II[edit]

Jack made a deal withDavy Jones, who raised theBlack Pearl from the depths of the sea and let Jack be the captain of it for thirteen years. In exchange, Jack promised Jones hissoul.Kingdom Hearts III

At an unknown point in time,Barbossa lead a mutiny against Jack and took theBlack Pearl from him along with his crew. As a result, Jack believed that he gained some extra years free from repaying his debt as he did not have theBlack Pearl and was not captain of it. Despite all this, he would always refer to himself as a 'captain" when introducing himself.

Kingdom Hearts II[edit]

Jack Sparrow was arrested for piracy on Port Royal while attempting to steal a ship to go after theBlack Pearl. After Barbossa kidnappedElizabeth Swann, Will Turner reminds Jack of the debt for freeing him, so the two, together with Sora and gang, hijack theHMS Interceptor to go after theBlack Pearl.

While Sora and gang had to stand guard, though they worried the two couldn't fight theHeartless, Jack and Will infiltrate the cave onIsla de Muerta, where a ritual is underway with Elizabeth, whose blood Barbossa believes will break the curse. Mistrusting Jack, Will knocks him unconscious. He rescues Elizabeth, and the two escape to theInterceptor, with Jack captured and tied to the mast on theBlack Pearl. After a fierce battle between Sora's gang and the Undead Pirates, theInterceptor crew is captured. After learning Will can break the curse, Barbossa left some Heartless and kegs of lit gunpowder to leave Sora and gang to their fate. However, the heroes managed to overcome the odds and returned to the island and rescued Will.

Jack Sparrow tricks Barbossa
Jacks walks into the moonlight after being stabbed, preventing his death.

Jack more than matches the ruthless captain blow for blow. While Jack is momentarily distracted, Barbossa impales him with his sword, believing he is mortally wounded. However, when he stumbles backwards into the moonlight, Jack is revealed to be under the curse, having sneaked aCursed Medallion from the chest to curse himself while Sora and gang dealt with Barbossa's cursed crewmen. Jack and Will lift the curse just after Jack fatally shoots Barbossa with the shot he has carried for ten years. No longer immortal, Barbossa falls onto the ground, dead. Though Will offered his hand to Jack, he took a step back in fear Will might hit him again. Jack's compass was then used to reveal akeyhole that opened up new routes with Sora'sKeyblade.

On Sora's return trip to Port Royal they discover that there are still cursed pirates in Port Royal. Jack and his crew journey to Isla de Muerta aboard theInterceptor, saving Will from a certain death, and on the way come across a member ofOrganization XIII,Luxord, who has stolen the chest with the cursed medallions and summons a giantHeartless to fight them. Upon defeat, Luxord calls for parley by throwing out four pieces of treasure toGambler Nobodies and destroying theInterceptor with theBlack Pearl's armament. After landing in the Ship Graveyard, the crew discovers that the curse has come back to Jack. The group hunts down the four stolen medallions, and eventually find them.

Sora's Keyblade returns from Jack Sparrow
Sora's Keyblade disappears from Jack's hand and returns to Sora.

Back at Port Royal, Luxord is there waiting for them to return the treasure. After it is returned, he summons the Heartless from before who is now under the curse. When they return the medallions, the curse on the Heartless lifts, but Jack's skeleton form remains.Goofy immediately realizes that Jack has been put under the Heartless' spell rather than the gold's curse.

After the Heartless is defeated, the curse is lifted for good. The chest is then dumped into the sea to ensure that the curse does not ever resurface. As a reward for his trouble, Jack asks for Sora's Keyblade. Knowing the Keyblade would return to him, Sora agrees to it. When it vanishes back to Sora's hand, though, Jack is not surprised. Jack vows to one day get a bloodthirsty crew together and steal the Keyblade. Sora, Will, and Elizabeth comment on Jack being the best pirate in the Spanish Main, as well as the whole ocean.

After the defeat ofXemnas, Jack, Will, and Elizabeth are shown on theBlack Pearl. As Jack sails, the moon comes out and he checks his hand, still remaining human. He pulls something out of his pocket and kisses it, implying that he has kept one of the gold pieces, now no longer cursed.

Kingdom Hearts III[edit]

Some time later, Davy Jones came to collect Jack's soul; not caring that technically Jack didn't fully receive his end of their deal. This has resulted in Jones sending theKraken to devour him, causing both Jack and theBlack Pearl to end up in Davy Jones' Locker.

As Sora,Donald and Goofy chase theBlack Pearl in Davy Jones' Locker, they reunite with Jack who was also going after the ship. The group of four later reunite with Elizabeth, Will,Joshamee Gibbs,Tia Dalma, and a revived Barbossa. They become separated after the Heartless attacked.

Jack strikes a deal with Beckett.

The real Jack negotiates withCutler Beckett. Beckett wants Jack to divulge information about the Brethren Court, such as where they will meet and their plans. In exchange, Beckett claims he can guarantee Jack's freedom, give him fair compensation and square his debt with Davy Jones.

A fake Jack created from crabs by Tia is used to assist Sora, Donald, and Goofy. After helping defend the trio from Luxord and collecting plenty of crabs, the fake Jack disappears after revealing the truth, although tells the three where the site of a pirate showdown will occur.

On a small island, Jack, with Elizabeth and Barbossa at his side, meets with Davy Jones, Will and Beckett. Jones still does not consider Jack's debt to be paid and tries to force Jack to become his slave for a hundred years on theFlying Dutchman. Elizabeth tries to exchange Will's slavery for Jack's, which works.

Jack breathes in Luxord's face
Jack breathes in Luxord's face, knocking him off theFlying Dutchman.

During the final showdown, when theFlying Dutchman is under invasion, Jack turns against Jones and steals the chest. Jack also manages to drive off Luxord using the power of his breath, the foul odor causing Luxord to step back and fall into the maelstrom. Jack is soon found by Jones, who accosts him. With Sora, Donald, and Goofy's arrival, Jack does battle with Jones. During the fight, Jones breaks Jack's sword but Will and Elizabeth's arrival gives Jack the chance to open the chest. Holding the unlocked chest to Davy Jones'heart, Jack reveals his intention to stab the heart, but Jones mortally wounds Will. As Sora, Donald, and Goofy attack Jones in fury, Jack ultimately chooses to save Will by helping him stab the heart; killing Jones and making Will the new captain of theDutchman.

Jack and Elizabeth watch Will die with Sora, who asks if there is anything they can do to save him. Jack merely states that theFlying Dutchman must have a captain before escaping theDutchman as it continued sailing down into the maelstrom. Arriving safely aboard theBlack Pearl, Jack orders the crew to prepare for attack while Beckett has theEndeavour prepare to attack thePearl. Fortunately, theDutchman resurfaces with Will as the new captain of theFlying Dutchman. Both thePearl and theDutchman sail to the Endeavour and, by Jack's order, fires a full broadside, destroying the ship and killing Beckett.

In the aftermath, with Will now bound aboard the Dutchman, Elizabeth thanks Jack, Sora, and friends for their efforts. She bids them, Barbossa, and the crew farewell before leaving with Will, planning to spend their only day together. A distraught Sora is then assured by Sparrow that one day is enough for hearts to connect.

Sometime afterXehanort's defeat, at Port Royal, Jack and Gibbs spot a dinghy at the port and watch a ship sail in the distance, realizing that Barbossa has stolen theBlack Pearl again.

Design[edit]

Jack Sparrow is a tan, mustachioed man who wears his dark brown hair in dreadlocks decorated with numerous beads. His beard is similarly styled into two smaller dreads, each with two very small beads near the tips. Jack wears a faded red bandanna on his head, on which is another small beaded ornament ending ina silver coin. He wears brown boots and has brown eyes, and carries the sheath of his cutlass on his left hip, kept in place by a black strap that goes over his right shoulder. He wears another tan belt around his waist, over a tattered, white piece of cloth tied around his waist. Jack's compass hangs from this second belt, tied on by a piece of twine, and his pistol is tucked into the cloth. He wears a faded, loose white shirt underneath a black jacket that exposes his chest, both tucked beneath the cloth and belt. The legs of his black pants are tucked into his boots. Jack sports a fingerless glove on his right hand. Strangely, inKingdom Hearts II, Jack doesn't wear his hat, even though it was repeatedly shown to be precious to him in the films.

Under the effects of the curse, when under moonlight, Jack's body becomes that of a rotted skeleton. Though more or less the same, Jack's clothes become far more tattered, to the point that he altogether loses most of the legs of his pants. His skin becomes grey and rotten, and the decay of his lips exposes three gold teeth in the front of his mouth.

InKingdom Hearts III, Jack wears his complete captain outfit, which includes his grey captain's jacket and tricorn hat.

Personality[edit]

Sparrow's trademark physical characteristic is a slightly drunken swagger, accompanied by slurred speech and awkwardly flailing hand gestures that make him appear unfocused. Jack is generally honest, though he tends to be met with disbelief due to his convoluted manner of speaking and status as a pirate. He believes that a pirate can still be good man, and is angered by the Heartless and Organization's actions giving real pirates a bad name. Though both deny it, Jack and Sora have similar personalities; Jack agrees with Sora's policy to never trust pirates.

Jack strictly adheres to the Pirate Code, as shown when he adheres to Luxord's call for a parley inKingdom Hearts II. Though he's not above loopholes, such as silencing Luxord inKingdom Hearts III before he can say the word, even telling him in annoyed tone"look around, mate. We're busy." When asked by Sora, Donald and Goofy to teach them more of the Code, Jack explains its on a need to know basis, showing he feels it best to use his interpretation of the Code over the literal ones.

He also prefers to be called "Captain Jack Sparrow" or "Captain Sparrow". Unlike most other pirates, Jack has a good heart and does actually care for his friends, even sacrificing his dream of being immortal to save Will. He even has the courage to make a last stand against certain death if it means he perished fighting for his beliefs, telling Gibbs that he does not believe in running away just to hide.

While he may not admit it, he does consider Will and Elizabeth friends. The only other people Jack shows respect for and even trusts to a certain extent, is his loyal first mateJoshamee Gibbs, and Sora and company. He is one of the few in other worlds who is aware that Sora is not from his world, as made evident when he overhears their conversation about being from another world, and keeps it to himself while still aiding them.

Abilities[edit]

Per the norm as a pirate, Jack is a skilled swordsman, as well as being a talented lock-picker and escape artist. He's also a good sailor in his own right, teaching Sora, Donald and Goofy how to help man a vessel; his captaincy showing how he can make due with a small crew.

Kingdom Hearts II[edit]

Jack is primarily an offensive party member, using hissword to attack in addition to bombs and knives. As such, his fighting style is somewhat similar toAladdin's, although he is slower and has the aforementioned projectile attacks.

Jack has anaction ability for each of the weapons in his arsenal:No Mercy is his sword attack,Rain Storm throws knives, andBone Smash involves bombs. Hislimit,Treasure Isle, involves Jack summoning a treasure chest that creates a trapping vortex before Jack and Sora devastate enemies through melee attacks and explosions. Additionally, Jack has a number of support abilities, includingDraw,Lucky Lucky,Item Boost,Defender, andAuto Healing.

Jack starts with 50 HP and 100 MP. He starts with 1armor slot, 1accessory slot, and 4item slots, all of which start withPotions. Kingdom Hearts III[edit]

Jack returns with largely the same skill set as he did inKingdom Hearts II. He is able to throw more bombs at once while also having a leaping aerial sword attack at his disposal. Unlike inKingdom Hearts II, Sparrow can now deal with aerial enemies by leaping several feet into the air and perform a spinning somersault kick attack while landing a single hit with his sword.

His team attack with Sora is called "Never Fear", in which he and Sora perform a sweeping sword combo attack. While performing this attack, he and Sora have free movement. The finishing move is Jack throwing dozens of bombs into the air, and then he and Sora detonating them with slashing attacks, causing heavy damage to all enemies in range of the explosions.

Jack's base stats are 30AP, 185HP, and 100MP. He has 2 armor slots, 3 accessory slots, and 3 item slots, one of which starts equipped with aPotion.
