Destiny Islands, namedDestiny Island inKingdom Hearts II, is a world from theKingdom Hearts series. It is the home world ofSora,Riku, andXehanort. The world seems to be led by an unnamed mayor, who is mentioned as Kairi's foster parent.
Destiny Islands lies within theRealm of Light, and its counterpart in theRealm of Darkness is theDepths of Darkness.
Destiny Islands is playable during the prologues ofKingdom Hearts andKingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance. However, the remains of the Destiny Islands reappear at theEnd of the World. A memory-based version of the world appears inKingdom Hearts Chain of Memories. InKingdom Hearts II,Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days,Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep andKingdom Hearts III, the world is not playable and only appears in cutscenes. InKingdom Hearts coded, a data version of the world appears as the first full playable world.
The main function of this world in the originalKingdom Hearts is to serve as an extendedtutorial where the player can get the hang of battle mechanics against opponents without being incapacitated, gainexperience, and receiveitems for future battles.
Settings and Areas[edit]
Kingdom Hearts[edit]
InKingdom Hearts only the small island where Sora, Riku, Kairi,Selphie,Tidus, andWakka play can be seen and visited, and is show to be accessed by the use of rowboats from the main island. TheSeashore (海辺, Umibe?) area is naturally covered in yellow sandy beaches, exotic trees and shrubbery, and wooden constructions. There is aSeaside Shack (海辺の小屋, Umibe no Koya?) and a large treehouse built into an enormous tree. The Seaside Shack contains the island's onlySave Point. A miniature island is settled next to the island and can be reached by crossing a bridge (which can be accessed by using the stairs in the Seaside Shack mentioned above or alternatively, by swimming towards a ladder on the opposite side of the island, and then climbing it). Sora can also have duels with Wakka, Selphie and Tidus nearby in the first game. Sora and Riku often practice their sword fights at the place where the friends can watch the sunset—past the bridge, on the miniature island. On that island is a crooked palm tree that growspaopu fruits. Local myth dictates that the two people who share one will have their destinies intertwined. TheCove (入江, Irie?) at the back of the island has an obstacle course that Sora and Riku use during their competitive challenges. Along the obstacle course there's a wooden tower which can be used to zipline down to another smaller wooden construction. At the midpoint of the course is a tiny tree with a star-shaped lamp on top of it. Next to it is a small tunnel which leads back to the Seashore. The Cove is also where Sora, Riku, and Kairi build their raft.
TheSecret Place (秘密の場所, Himitsu no Basho?) is a cave hidden behind the island's waterfall, which the kids visited during their childhood. Sora and Riku first discovered it when they were young children. There is a shut door at the end of the cave which is actually theKeyhole of the world. The cave's walls are covered in chalk drawings, including drawings ofDonald Duck and aChocobo, as well as Sora and Kairi sharing a paopu fruit.
The only part of the mainland which can be seen is Sora's bedroom, where he has a clear view of the smaller island from his crooked window. His room is filled with various fishermen equipment, as well as several odd constructions on his shelves. His room is overall quite cluttered with clothes, books, and toys spread across his floor. During the storm, where the Heartless invades, the Destiny Islands is destroyed. During the invasion Sora ends up at theStorm-tossed Island (嵐の浮島, Arashi no Ukishima?, lit. "Floating Island in the Storm"), an area that broke off from the rest of the islands as a result of the Heartless' attack.
The remnants of Destiny Islands are accessed deep withinEnd of the World, in a room namedHomecoming (想い出の島, Omoide no Shima?, lit. "Island of Memories"). The area looks identical at first but quickly breaks apart. During the first battle againstAnsem, Seeker of Darkness, the island is seen floating in the sky with the beach broken into pieces, and the trees being torn into purple spiky forms. After the first battle the trees tear open and a huge purple arena can be accessed within it.
Kingdom Hearts Chain of Memories[edit]
The Destiny Islands are reconstructed twice through memories atCastle Oblivion; once during Sora's story and again during Riku's. The world can mainly be explored through boxed-in areas inspired by the island, but theSeashore andStorm-tossed Island are visited in cutscenes. InKingdom Hearts Chain of Memories, the Storm-tossed Island serves as an arena for the battle against theDarkside, where the wind occasionally pushes the player character to the sides. InKingdom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories, there are two versions of this area, each version serving as arenas for the battles against theDarkside andZexion, the differences between the two versions include the Darkside's version being larger and having cracks on the floor, which serve for the purpose of theGimmick Card.
During the credits the main island's beach can be briefly seen as Selphie, Tidus, and Wakka race across it.
InKingdom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories, the picture on the Destiny Islands card is the world's logo fromKingdom Hearts II in cutscenes. However, the world's logo from the first game is still shown in the gameplay.
Kingdom Hearts II[edit]
InKingdom Hearts II the main island where all the worlds residents live is shown in bigger detail. A fairly large town with huge mountains can be seen in the distance from a long clay path calledOcean's Road (本島:海に続く道, Hontō: Umi ni Tsuzuku Michi?, lit. "Main Island: Road to the Sea"). By the hillside there are a few electric towers spread across it. Kairi and Selphie are also seen in their school uniforms, revealing they have schools on the main land as well. Closer to the beach are a lot of smaller houses with oak trees growing evenly between them. Down by theShore (本島:海岸, Hontō: Kaigan?, lit. "Main Island: Coast") is a dock where a lot of palm trees (similar to the ones on the smaller island) grow. The smaller island is also easily seen from the Shore.
Although the Small Island's miniature islet is depicted as facing the open ocean and the setting sun, the scene in whichKairi stands on the beach of the Main Island depicts the Small Island in the opposite position, with the miniature islet facing the Main Island and the Cove facing the setting sun. However, if this was its correct orientation, the Main Island would have been visible from the islet's paopu tree, while the view from said tree is simply endless ocean and an unobstructed view of the setting sun.
InKingdom Hearts II Final Mix, the only playable area of Destiny Islands is Castle Oblivion's reconstructed version of theStorm-tossed Island (嵐の浮島, Arashi no Ukishima?, lit. "Floating Island in the Storm"), which is the arena for the battles against Zexion'sAbsent Silhouette and hisReplica Data.
Kingdom Hearts coded[edit]
InKingdom Hearts coded a data version of Destiny Islands is explored. The world is for the most part quite similar to its appearance in the first game, though only the Seashore area - now just calledDestiny Islands (デスティニーアイランド, Desutinī Airando?) - and theSecret Place (秘密の場所, Himitsu no Basho?) can be accessed. These areas are now invaded by various types of theBug Blox. Once again theStorm-tossed Island (嵐の浮島, Arashi no Ukishima?, lit. "Floating Island in the Storm") serves as battle arena for the Darkside encounter.
InKingdom Hearts Re:coded threeSystem Sectors can be accessed through different entry points. The first is entered through the wooden door north from the smaller island. The second is on the doorway at the top of the large tree to the north. And the third is found on the door within the Secret Place.

Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance[edit]
Destiny Islands appear very briefly as part of the tutorial forKingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance. The only playable part is far out on the ocean, where Sora and Riku fightUrsula from their broken raft.
Kingdom Hearts 0.2 Birth by Sleep -A fragmentary passage-[edit]
AsAqua traversesThe Realm of Darkness, she and andMickey arrive at what's left of Destiny Islands. There they arrive atHomecoming, the same area from End of the World in the first game, though below the floating deranged island is now an even bigger piece of land hanging in the sky. The floating island is covered in sand with palm trees in the outskirts, surrounded by large, sharp, and purple structures. The area serves as the arena for the battle against theDemon Tide. When the Heartless turns into its tornado form, the once blue sky turns dark red.
After theDoor to Darkness is closed Aqua briefly lies on the shores of Destiny Islands before its completely restored and returned to theRealm of Light.
Kingdom Hearts III[edit]
Although inaccessible through normal gameplay inKingdom Hearts III, the small island's Seashore area can be seen in cutscenes. Its appearance remains unchanged fromKingdom Hearts, with sandy beaches, trees and foliage with wooden constructions, the cascade near the entrance to the Secret Place, the Seaside Shack, and the miniature island and its bridge. In addition, Sora summons a door to theDark Margin in front of the entrance to the Secret Place using theMaster's Defender; the door is white with golden ornaments, reminiscent of indoor designs from theLand of Departure.
Through four differentData Greeting locations, the small island can be used as a photo-location inKingdom Hearts III Re Mind, with access restricted to the small island's beach and the miniature island.
Story[edit]
BeforeKingdom Hearts Dark Road[edit]
A cloaked figure bearingPlayer'sheart learns of a prophesied "child of destiny", a special child who would save the world from the darkness and be able to connect to other people's hearts. This child would hail from Destiny Islands. Believing the newbornXehanort to be this destined savior, the cloaked figure takes him from his mother inScala ad Caelum and raises him on Destiny Islands so the darkness could not find him. One day, however, Xehanort will become strong enough to leave the island and fulfill his destined role.
Kingdom Hearts Dark Road[edit]
When Xehanort is still an adolescent, his cloaked caretaker dies, leaving him alone on Destiny Islands. Following, Xehanort meets his futureHeartless,Ansem, who opens a portal to Scala ad Caelum, beginning Xehanort's journey as a Keyblade wielder.
BetweenKingdom Hearts Dark Road andKingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep[edit]
While touring the worlds in preparation for hisMark of Mastery exam, Xehanort returned to the islands. There, he reunites with Ansem, who reveals to him their plan to create theReal Organization XIII and gives the power to travel through time, entrusting him with the task of finding him,Xemnas,Braig,Vanitas and eight others to serve as members of their group. After carrying out his duties asYoung Xehanort, Xehanort returns to his time without any memories of the future; however, the events are engraved in hisheart, leaving him with a sense of what he needs to do to enact his plans for the future.
Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep[edit]
Many years later Xehanort returns as an old man, intending to leave his dying, comatose apprentice,Ventus, at the islands for his final days. However, Ventus's broken heart connects with that of the newborn Sora, and he revives, summoning his Keyblade. Seeing further use in the boy, Xehanort immediately takes him to Master Eraqus at the Land of Departure.
Terra is the first of the threeKeyblade wielders to visit Destiny Islands. There, he finds thepaopu fruit tree which the fruit is shaped like hisWayfinder. He also watches a young Sora and Riku "race", the latter realizing that Terra came from the outside world. After asking Riku why he wants to leave the islands, Riku explains that a man once left the islands to visit other worlds, and that he wants to do the same. Terra sees a vision of the man and then sees what Riku will become. This convinces him to choose Riku as hissuccessor so that one day he may wield the Keyblade.
Aqua arrives shortly after Terra leaves and also notices Sora and Riku. She recognizes that their friendship is identical to the bond between Ventus and Terra, and decides to choose Sora as her successor. However, when she discovers that Terra has already chosen Riku, she changes her mind, not wanting to force the friends to fight. Instead, she asks Sora to save Riku if he were to ever fall intodarkness.
Much later, after fleeing the destruction ofLand of Departure, Ventus arrives on the islands, where he runs intoVanitas and learns the truth of his past. Afterward, he leaves to meet his fate at theKeyblade Graveyard.
Some time after the defeat of Master Xehanort and Vanitas, Sora and Riku watch the stars on a beach facing the Small Island. As they prepare to depart home, Sora suddenly feels Ventus's sadness connecting with his heart. Riku advises him to try and reach out to that sad heart, and as Sora connects to Ventus's heart he enters his firstDive to the Heart. He joins his heart with Ventus's, hoping to make it happy again, then tells Riku that he was right as they go back to watching the stars.
BetweenKingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep andKingdom Hearts[edit]
One night, a meteor shower occurred, and the next day a mysterious girl namedKairi arrived on the island; this was due to a charmAqua had cast on Kairi to lead her to someone who would protect her. She was adopted by the mayor and became friends with Sora and Riku. Similar to Xehanort, Riku also harbored a desire to see more than just the tiny world around him. One day, he and Sora visited the Secret Place, thinking there might be a monster in it, but noticed it was just the wind. After Sora left, Riku noticed theKeyhole to his world's heart on the mysterious door.
Kingdom Hearts[edit]
When Sora awakens from hisDive to the Heart, he meets up with Kairi and Riku. Now teenagers, the three plan on building araft and to set sail across the sea to find other worlds away from the island. Destiny Islands is a small world, which often leads to the boredom of its inhabitants, especially Riku, who desires to leave the islands and see the other worlds out there. Riku says his desire is thanks to Kairi, who herself came to the Islands fromanother world.
While gathering materials for the journey, Sora enters the Secret Place, a tiny cave on the island where the children scratch drawings onto rocks, and meets a figure in a strange cloak who tells him cryptic messages about the time to come. Sora's confusion lasts long into the night. Resting up in his bedroom, he sees a dangerous storm approaching, and hurries off to the island to save the raft.
Upon arriving at the island that night, Sora discovers his friends came as well, and the world has been overrun withShadows. Sora tries to fight the Shadows, but couldn't harm them at all with hisWooden Sword. He finds Riku, who is surrounded by darkness. Riku tells Sora to accept the darkness, and then they are both swallowed up by it. However, Sora is saved from it by the appearance of theKingdom Key in his hand. Once out of the darkness, he sees that Riku has disappeared. With the Keyblade now under his control, Sora fights and defeats the Shadows that he could not harm before. He then finds an apparently-ill Kairi in the Secret Place. A great wind suddenly occurs emanating from the world's Keyhole, pushing Kairi's body right through Sora's and pushing both of them out of the Secret Place. Landing on the Islands as they are slowly crumbling into darkness, Sora fights and defeats theDarkside for the second time, but fails to save his home, and is whisked away on his journey toTraverse Town.
Once theDoor to Darkness is sealed, Destiny Islands is freed from the darkness and pull Kairi back to a patch of land near the door. Kairi bids good-bye to Sora as the islands restore themselves and the portal to where Sora is closes. Later, Kairi finds the drawing of Sora handing her apaopu fruit, crying with joy and adding herself handing the other half to him.
Some time after Ansem's defeat, Tidus, Selphie, and Wakka run across the beach, much like Riku, Sora, and Kairi did earlier.
Kingdom Hearts Chain of Memories[edit]
After theRiku Replica is defeated on the 11th floor ofCastle Oblivion, he drops hisWayfinder charm, which is revealed to be theWorld Card for Destiny Islands. Sora rushes to use it in order to get toNaminé, but whenGoofy andDonald urge him to be cautious, he angrily rebukes them, and goes through the memory world alone. Naminé manipulates his memories to make Sora believe she also lived on the Destiny Islands, and Sora is urged by his memories to rescue her. However, after he defeats a memory Darkside, Naminé appears and reveals the truth about Kairi, herself, and what she has been doing to Sora.
After Riku defeatsLexaeus,Zexion appears with a World Card and entices Riku to enter his own version of Destiny Islands. Unlike Sora, Riku finds no one on the islands, except a memory of his Darkside, the one who devoured the islands. After defeating the monster, he sees "Sora", who is in actuality Zexion in disguise. "Sora" accuses him of being a monster of darkness, and attacks him withlight. In the light, Riku considers giving up, but Naminé (disguised as Kairi) speaks to his heart and urges him to use both his light and his darkness, which are invincible together. Riku sees through Zexion's disguise and attacks, forcing Zexion to flee.
Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days[edit]
With the exception of Kairi, all of the current residents of Destiny Islands have forgotten about Sora, due to the side-effect of Naminé attempting to restore his memories; she remembers him vaguely due to their strong bond. This world has remained safe from the forces of darkness, leaving it as peaceful and unconnected as it was before theHeartless attacked.
Xion visits this world, only calling it "the beach" and takes a seashell each dayRoxas is in his coma, placing them by his pillow. Appreciating the gesture, Roxas returns the favor when Xion falls into a coma. Due to this being Sora's home world, Roxas feels a sense ofdéjà vu and often feels like he's dreaming when visiting Destiny Islands.
When Xion later defects fromOrganization XIII, she ends up here, dreaming about what her purpose of existing is; the dream constructs of Roxas and Axel tell Xion that her place is with them. When she awakens, Xion finds Riku tending to her. He explains that Sora's most important memories (which, at the time of Xion's creation, were of Kairi) had become trapped inside her. If those memories never returned and Sora stayed asleep forever, the Organization could use the power of his Keyblade by manipulating hisNobody (Roxas) and Replica (Xion). Riku asks Xion to come with him to Naminé, so the memories can be given back to Sora. When Xion is indecisive, he gives her time decide what the right option is.
Axel later suggests to Xion and Roxas that they should visit the beach on their next day off.
Kingdom Hearts II[edit]
Due to the strong bond between them, Kairi retains a faint memory of Sora while nearly everyone else has forgotten about him. Due to Roxas coming into contact withNaminé and trying to contact her, he accidentally makes a psychic connection to Kairi.[1] Roxas reveals he knows about Sora from his dreams, and Kairi asks him for Sora's name. Able to communicate via the bonds between his and Roxas's hearts, Sora jestingly voices his shock she forgot his name and tells her it starts with an "S". Kairi heads to the shore and releases abottled letter into the ocean, tellingSelphie that she wrote it the previous day and made a vow that she would find Sora one day.[2] At that moment, she finally remembers Sora's name.
After some time passes, Kairi has her memory of Sora restored like everyone else. However, she now doubts that waiting is good enough. She is surprised byAxel and someDusks; Axel offers to take Kairi to Sora, claiming to be a friend of Sora too. However, a disguised Riku appears and opens a portal for Kairi toTwilight Town, and whenPluto takes this portal, Kairi follows.
Naminé opens a portal to Destiny Islands on the Altar of Naught, allowingMickey, Donald, Goofy, Pluto,Jiminy, and Kairi passage beforeXemnas closes it to trap Sora and Riku in theWorld of Nothingness. A bit later, Kairi's letter washes up on theDark Margin in front of Sora and Riku, and the bonds it strengthens allow Sora and Riku to open theDoor to Light and finally return to Destiny Islands, more than a year after they originally left.[?] Kairi later finds a letter fromKing Mickey, informing them aboutTerra,Ventus, andAqua.Kingdom Hearts Re:coded
Kingdom Hearts coded[edit]
After King Mickey and Jiminy discover a message inJiminy's Journal, they createa data version of Sora. After Sora exits his Awakening, he finds out that the island is covered withBug Blox Corruption, which Data-Sora must delete. Afterwards, he encounters Jiminy's Journal wearing theBlack Cloak. He then finds the Data Keyhole behind the waterfall of Destiny Islands. After he opens it he fights Darkside, the island's source of Bug Blox corruption. Then the data island is destroyed, just as it was in the first game. The digitized journal then displaysAnsem, Seeker of Darkness appearing before Riku, opening theCorridor of Darkness for him.
After leaving the Datascape once more, Mickey sendsanother bottled letter to Sora on the real Destiny Islands, which Kairi delivers to him.
Blank Points[edit]
Sora is sitting on the paopu fruit tree, deep in thought about Terra, Ventus, and Aqua and how their sacrifices helped shape him into the person he is. Riku approaches, asking if he has decided whether or not to answerYen Sid's summon to take theMark of Mastery exam at theMysterious Tower. Sora tells Riku that he has. When Kairi approaches the two, Sora tells her that he has another long journey to make, one that might be even more difficult than all of the others they have had. Kairi then gives Sora herWayfinder charm and tells him to hurry back.
Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance[edit]
As part of theirMark of Mastery exam, Sora and Riku are sent back to the Destiny Islands before it was swallowed by the darkness and became aSleeping World; additionally, they were reverted to the age they were when their world was destroyed, so they could relearn old and new skills. Avoiding their past selves, they decide to take the raft out to sea before theHeartless arrive. Once the storm arrives, the raft's sail is broken off by powerful winds, leaving Sora and Riku stranded in the middle of the sea. To their shock,Ursula emerges from a dark corridor within the water as a giant, mentioning that "someone" told her where they were. They manage to defeat Ursula, but the currents pull them underwater, where they open a Keyhole to theRealm of Sleep. Above water,Ansem watches; he later reveals to Riku that Riku subconsciously noticed the danger he posed and entered Sora's dreams to keep his friend safe fromNightmares.
The islands appear again when Sora is put to sleep byYoung Xehanort. In the dream, he sees Ansem meeting the younger version of himself, with the present version explaining that he was tasked by his future self to travel through time. He then goes on to explain that Ansem was not only present the night the islands were swallowed by darkness to watch the event, but to ensure that he and the other versions of Xehanort could interfere with the Mark of Mastery exam for their own ends.
When Riku dives back into Sora's heart and uses Sora's Keyblade, he enters a memory of the Destiny Islands. Here, he meets projections of Roxas, Ventus, and Xion, who each ask a question before disappearing. After answering the three questions, Riku finds a bottle in the surf, and a data projection of Ansem the Wise approaches him. Ansem speaks to Riku aboutAnsem's Code, research data contained in the bottle that he had hid inside Sora while he was asleep. He then tells Riku that by defeating theArmored Ventus Nightmare and answering the three questions, he had successfully awakened Sora and could go back to the real world.
Kingdom Hearts III[edit]
When Sora, Donald, and Goofy learn that Riku and Mickey are in trouble at theRealm of Darkness, Sora tries to find a way to get to the Realm of Darkness. Using his heart as his guiding key, Sora sets off to Destiny Islands, where he finds theMaster's Defender and uses it to transform the door to the Secret Place into a door to the Realm of Darkness. After Sora freesAqua from her corruption, he and Riku bring her to Destiny Islands.
Before the clash of light and darkness in theKeyblade Graveyard, Sora and Kairi take a moment to reflect on the battle ahead and share paopu fruits, while Riku sits alongside theRiku Replica, although only he could see it.
After Xehanort's defeat, theGuardians of Light and their friends all gather at the Destiny Islands to relax on the beach. They then watch Sora and Kairi together as Sora fades away.
