A newer addition to Andy's toy lineup: an action figure who at one point believed he was a real, actual space ranger. Buzz reluctantly agreed to leave Andy's room and investigate Galaxy Toys.
"You can't be serious. Oh! That's right, you're from a video game. Well, maybe in your game, that's how things work... but here in reality, you can't "split worlds." This is ridiculous."
—Buzz toSora

Buzz Lightyear is a toy based on a Space Ranger fromToy Box who is a party member inKingdom Hearts III. He originated in the Disney/Pixar filmToy Story.

Development[edit]

Unfinished Buzz Lightyear model fromKingdom Hearts II.

The proposal folder shown to Buena Vista included plans for a world based on Toy Story in the originalKingdom Hearts. ForKingdom Hearts II a model of Buzz Lightyear andWoody were created for a similar purpose but according to the series' director Tetsuya Nomura, there was never a chance to present them to Disney so the idea was scrapped.[1] Both the world and the characters finally made their appearance inKingdom Hearts III as party members in Toy Box.

Story[edit]

Kingdom Hearts III[edit]

Along with his friendsWoody,Rex,Hamm, theLittle Green Men, and theGreen Army Men, Buzz is taken away from his owner Andy and trapped in a replicated version of his world byXehanort to experiment on the nature of their hearts. Buzz joins his fellow toys on Andy's bed, as they prepare to take on theintruders that have appeared in Andy's room. They plan to spring upon the intruders on Woody's count; however, Buzz stops his friends, as three new toys,Sora,Donald Duck andGoofy, have shown up.

The trio defeat the Heartless and introduce themselves. Buzz, suspicious of the newcomers, demands Sora tell him where he had fought the Heartless before. However, his interrogation is stopped by the others, who believe Sora, Donald, and Goofy to be Andy's newest toys. As they plan to search Galaxy Toys for Xehanort, Buzz initially refuses, arguing that they should stay and wait for Andy's return. He eventually acquiesces, and the toys join Sora.

At Galaxy Toys, Xehanort appears and summons Heartless to pilot theGigas toys against Sora. Buzz assists in defeating them, but is concerned about the idea of the toys being possessed, and that his friends were forced to fight them. He again suggests returning to Andy's room, but upon learning that the Heartless kidnapped Rex, Hamm, and the Little Green Men, he agrees to continue further into Galaxy Toys.

Despite his misgivings, he continues to fight possessed toys through the toy store. He expresses his doubts to the rest, fearing that he may himself be possessed and forced to attack his friends. Once all of his friends are recovered, he decides it is time for them all to return home. However, before they can leave, Xehanort appears once more, summoning aMarionette to possess Buzz, whose heart had been weakened by fear and doubt. Buzz turns his laser on Woody and attacks. Though Goofy, Donald, and Rex try to stop him, he disappears into aCorridor of Darkness.

Young Xehanort and Buzz in the Dark Corridor
Buzz is trapped in darkness and held hostage by Young Xehanort.

Sora and the others track down another dark corridor in the toy store, finding Buzz inside trapped in a column of darkness. Xehanort muses on the darkness in Buzz's heart, but Woody responds by describing the love between the toys and Andy. His connection to Buzz breaks the darkness trapping him. The darkness takes the form of theKing of Toys, but Buzz regains his senses and helps Sora defeat it. Though the toys remain trapped in the alternate world for the time being, they remain hopeful of seeing Andy again and do not regret the chance to meet Sora and his friends, who have become a part of their hearts.

Some time after Xehanort's defeat, Buzz is seen with the other toys in Andy's room as the door finally opens with Andy's return.

Design[edit]

Buzz is a Space Ranger action figure. He has a large build and a very prominent chin. His head and neck are covered in a tight purple cowl. He has a white space suit with a green chest plate featuring red, green, and blue buttons on the right side and a round red button on his left used to deploy and collapse the wings from his jet pack. His right arm ordinarily has a light bulb that flashes red to simulate a laser, however during the events ofKingdom Hearts III, it is replaced by a working laser. He has a collapsible, clear dome helmet that is controlled by the purple knobs on the side of it. There is a black coil around his waist. "©DISNEY/PIXAR" is imprinted on his rear.

Personality[edit]

Buzz is good friends withWoody, who helped him through his early delusional phase of believing he was the actual Buzz Lightyear character instead of a toy. He is also a voice of reason and reassurance among his friends; he tends to calm the normally nervousRex by complimenting him on even accidental help he gives and makes simple tasks seem very important to give his friend confidence. Buzz is cautious and skeptical following the disappearance of his friends; he believes the best course of action is to wait around in Andy's Room until everyone comes back. His despair from being separated from Andy and the rest of their friends caused darkness to form in his heart. Despite their help repelling the Heartless, Buzz distrustsSora,Donald, andGoofy initially, becoming more suspicious of them as Donald refuses to let Sora respond to Buzz's questions.

Buzz's skepticism borders on the ridiculous at times; despite seeing things that would normally be impossible in his original world, he refuses to believe that they have been taken to an alternate version of it. When Sora explains whatYoung Xehanort meant by splitting the world in two, Buzz thinks Sora is suffering delusions like he first did. However, after seeing theHeartless possess toys, Buzz becomes more open-minded about unnatural occurrences. He also warms up to Sora, Donald and Goofy, apologizing for his behavior, though Sora assures that he understands that Buzz was just looking out for his friends.

Abilities[edit]

Buzz is a well-round fighter that specializes in attacking enemies from short to long distance. While in the alternate version of their world, Buzz is able to shootLaser Beams from his wrist. His lasers deal little damage, but are his only reliable way to hit floating enemies at range. Buzz's basic attacks deal damage to a small area by slamming his arms on the ground, which can be useful in clearing weak enemies faster. HisSpinning Lariat ability has him use his wings to attack by spinning around while moving to deal damage to enemies.

Buzz's base stats are 30AP, 170HP, and 100MP. He has 2 armor slots, 2 accessory slots, and 3 item slots, two of which start equipped withPotions.

Origin[edit]

Buzz Lightyear in the 1995Toy Story film.

Buzz Lightyear first appeared in 1995, in Pixar's first feature filmToy Story, voiced byTim Allen, and has since appeared in its sequels, as well as several television specials, shorts, and related media.Mike MacRae served as Buzz's voice actor for all Disney-released video games involving the character, and reprised his role forKingdom Hearts III.

In the 1995 film, Buzz Lightyear is the newest toy in the collection of a boy named Andy. He initially believes that he is the real Buzz Lightyear, a space ranger on a mission to defeat his nemesis, the evil Emperor Zurg, and repeatedly attempts to return to space. Woody, Andy's favorite toy, is jealous about the amount of time Andy now spends with Buzz and tried to hide him from Andy. In the process, he gets them both lost and in the possession of Sid, the toy-torturer who lives next door. In Sid's house, Buzz sees a commercial for the Buzz Lightyear action figure and finally realizes he is just a toy, sending him into a depression. With Woody's help, he regains his composure and the two of them escape back to Andy and become close friends.

Notes and references[edit]

  1. ^Multiplayer.itInterviewer: "Toy Story finally arrived inKingdom Hearts III, but elements related to the film of Pixar were already founded in bothKingdom Hearts andKingdom Hearts II code. Can you tell us why they weren't inserted in those games, in the end?" /Tetsuya Nomura: "I always wantedToy Story inKingdom Hearts, and I already hoped to insert a world based on it in the first chapter. For this reason, I asked our staff to create something related toToy Story, in case we were able to get the OK from the Disney. Sadly, no possibility were given to us and so the idea never entered in the development stage."Translation provided by Yoshirai@KH13.com
