The Kansas City Current are looking for a new head coach, the club confirmed to The Star Wednesday afternoon.
Huw Williams, who guided Kansas City through its inaugural season in the National Women’s Soccer League, will move into a technical-staff role that’s focused on scouting and identification of talent.
The search for a coach to succeed him has already begun.
Williams was introduced as the first coach of the new Kansas City NWSL team in December 2020 after the franchise relocated from Salt Lake City under new ownership. The team inherited the roster of the now-defunct Utah Royals, who failed to qualify for the playoffs in any of their three years in Utah.
Williams had previously served as the general manager and assistant coach to Vlatko Andonovski with FC Kansas City, the NWSL team here from 2013-17. Andonovski is now the head coach of the U.S. Women’s National Team.
With KC NWSL, rebranded recently as the KC Current, Williams was the third-longest-tenured head coach in the league. That was true in spite of his short time on the job — it was a tumultuous year for coaches across the NWSL.
The Current had a rough first season in the win loss column, accumulating just 16 points in 24 games.
Moving Williams into a technical-staff role would seem to make sense, as he has more than 30 years of experience in the realm of talent identification.
During Williams’ brief time as head coach of the Current, he brought in goalkeeper A.D. Franch and utility player Kristen Edmonds as mid-season acquisitions. Both contributed greatly to Kansas City’s improvement late in the year.
He is also responsible for several quality picks in the 2021 NWSL Draft, including Rookie of the Year finalist Victoria Pickett, three-time West Coast Conference Defender of the Year winner Alex Loera from Santa Clara and standout defender Kiki Pickett.
It is unknown whether members of Williams’ coaching staff will remain in their positions. That decision will rest in the hands of the club’s next head coach.
