Food assistance available for spring storm victims

JONESBORO, Ark. (KAIT) - The federal government is offering food assistance to people still recovering from this spring’s severe storms.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced Tuesday that 11,000 households in 14 Arkansas counties, including several in Northeast Arkansas, are eligible for assistance through the USDA’s Disaster Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.

The state is accepting D-SNAP applications now through July 20.

Eligible counties include:

  • Clark
  • Craighead
  • Crittenden
  • Greene
  • Hot Spring
  • Independence
  • Jackson
  • Lawrence
  • Pulaski
  • Randolph
  • Saline
  • Sharp
  • Stone
  • White

D-SNAP is available to those who may not usually be eligible for SNAP benefits.

To be eligible for D-SNAP, a household must:

  • Either live or work in an identified disaster area
  • Have been affected by the disaster
  • Meet certain D-SNAP eligibility criteria

Eligible households, according to Tuesday’s news release, will receive one month of benefits that can be used to purchase groceries.
