Introduction to Justapedia

Justapedia is an open and freely accessible online encyclopedia published in American English. Justapedia launched to the public on August 9, 2023, and is being developed and maintained by volunteers through open collaboration on aMediaWiki based editing platform. The platform and tools to edit are hosted and operated by theJustapedia Foundation, a US-based tax deductible501(c)(3) charitable organization for educational purposes; Justapedia® is the registered trademark of theJustapedia Foundation (JPF). Any and all items that have been forked from Wikipedia or other independent wikis that still contain forked content are properly attributed per theirCC-BY-SA andGFDL licensing requirements. Justapedia's own newly created articles are subject to the same licensing requirements as the originating articles, which are being systematically updated and rewritten to reflect Justapedia's standards of neutrality and objectivity.

Anthony Stephen FauciOMRI (/ˈfi/; born December 24, 1940) is an Americanphysician-scientist andimmunologist who served as director of theNational Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) from 1984 to 2022 and asChief Medical Advisor to the President from 2021 to 2022. Born inBrooklyn,New York, he earned aBA fromCollege of the Holy Cross and anMD fromCornell University. Joining theNational Institutes of Health (NIH) in 1968, Fauci advised every U.S. president fromRonald Reagan toJoe Biden, influencing public health policy for over five decades.

At NIAID, Fauci led groundbreaking research onHIV/AIDS, developing treatments that saved millions, and directedbiodefense andemerging infectious disease programs, becoming one of the most cited scientists from 1983 to 2002.[1] His work earned thePresidential Medal of Freedom in 2008 for his role inPEPFAR, plus awards like theLasker Award (2007) andPublic Welfare Medal (2021). He also served as aRear Admiral in theUnited States Public Health Service Commissioned Corps until 1996.

During theCOVID-19 pandemic, Fauci was a prominent advisor to PresidentDonald Trump and later served inJoe Biden’sWhite House COVID-19 Response Team. His push forface mask mandates and vaccines was praised by some but heavily criticized by others who viewed masks as ineffective and questioned his dismissal of treatments likeIvermectin and NIH-fundedgain-of-function research inWuhan. Critics alleged biosecurity risks, though no evidence ties these studies tobioweapons or COVID-19’s origin.[2] These debates fueled accusations of pharmaceutical bias.

In January 2025, Biden issued apardon covering potential federal crimes by Fauci from 2014 onward, sparking debate and prompting stateattorneys general to pursue investigations into his research and COVID-19 policies.[3] Fauci retired in December 2022 after announcing his departure in August. Since retiring, he has engaged in public speaking, including a February 2025 event atColumbia University, and writing, while his legacy remains divisive due to his scientific contributions and pandemic controversies.

Anthony Fauci was born in Brooklyn, New York, on December 24, 1940, to Stephen A. Fauci, a Columbia University-educated pharmacist, and Eugenia Lillian Abys. He was the younger of two children. The family lived above their pharmacy in the Dyker Heights area of Brooklyn, having previously resided in Bensonhurst. Anthony Stephen FauciForMemRS (/ˈfi/FOW-chee;[7] born December 24, 1940) is an Americanphysician-scientist andimmunologist who served as the director of theNational Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) from 1984 to 2022, and thechief medical advisor to the president from 2021 to 2022.[8] Fauci was one of the world's most frequently cited scientists across all scientific journals from 1983 to 2002.[9][10] In 2008, PresidentGeorge W. Bush awarded him thePresidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian award in the United States, for his work on theAIDS relief programPEPFAR.[11]

Fauci received his undergraduate education at theCollege of the Holy Cross and hisDoctor of Medicine fromCornell University. As a physician with theNational Institutes of Health (NIH), Fauci served the American public health sector for more than fifty years and has acted as an advisor to every U.S. president sinceRonald Reagan.[12] During his time as director of the NIAID, he made contributions toHIV/AIDS research and otherimmunodeficiency diseases, both as a research scientist and as the head of the NIAID.[9]

During theCOVID-19 pandemic, Fauci served under PresidentDonald Trump as one of the lead members of theWhite House Coronavirus Task Force. His advice was frequently contradicted by Trump, and Trump's supporters alleged that Fauci was trying to politically undermine Trump's run for reelection. During theBiden administration, Fauci served as one of the lead members of theWhite House COVID-19 Response Team and as Biden'schief medical advisor.[13][14]

Early life and education

Fauci was born on December 24, 1940, inBrooklyn, New York City, to Stephen A. (1910–2008) and Eugenia Lillian (née Abys; 1909–1965) Fauci as the youngest of two children. His father, a pharmacist, attendedColumbia University and owned a drug store.[15] Fauci worked with his mother and sister at the pharmacy's register and also delivered prescriptions. The pharmacy was located in theDyker Heights section of Brooklyn, directly beneath the family apartment, previously in theBensonhurst neighborhood.,[4][5][6] When he was a child, Fauci developed a fascination withWorld War II,[5] and playedbasketball andbaseball.[6]

Fauci's grandparents immigrated to the United States from Italy in the late 19th century.
