Founded in 1883,it was originally named the State Normal School in Jacksonville.

Jacksonville State University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) to award baccalaureate, masters, educational specialist, and doctorate degrees. Jacksonville State University also may offer credentials such as certificates and diplomas at approved degree levels. Beacon of Knowledge
At 13 stories, JSU’s Houston Cole Library is the state’s tallest academic building. It houses a collection of more than 1.1 million titles as well as the Center for Student Success. It is named for the University’s seventh president, Dr. Houston Cole (1942-1971) and was built in 1972. It is testament to Dr. Cole’s belief that the library should be the center of a campus, and should serve as a beacon to all who seek higher learning.
Emmy Award-Winning Cinematography
JSU’s Emmy Award-winning Longleaf Studios is an experiential learning unit that provides film and communication students with hands-on learning opportunities to work on real-world projects with professional filmmakers. The studio has produced seven documentaries that have aired on Alabama Public Television and has collected five Emmys to date.
Supporting the Blue
JSU is home to the Southeastern Leadership Command College, which prepares law enforcement officers for senior leadership roles. It is the only facility of its kind in the state.
A Sound Legacy
JSU is home to the internationally recognized, 536 member strong Marching Southerners and Ballerinas.
Fulbright Scholars
JSU has been recognized as a top producer of Fulbright Scholars by the US Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.
Gamecock Championships
JSU is the only school in the nation to lay claim to NCAA national titles in football, men's basketball and baseball at the Division I or Division II levels.
Service Learning
Last year Greeks raised more than $145,000 for charitable organizations and volunteered over 4,600 service hours for numerous causes!
A Rich Cultural Partnership
The International House Program began in 1946 with five students from France. Initially, the program focused on languages. Today, there are 40 members of the program - 20 American students and 20 internationals.
