About
Welcome toIntersex Recognition — a blog, resource hub, and ongoing project focused on everything related to intersex life, rights, and visibility.
This site started as a way to mark a historic event: in 2018, New York City issued what’s believed to be thefirst intersex birth certificate in the United States. It was a small but powerful moment — one that recognized intersex identity in an official, legal way, and helped push the conversation around gender, identity, and bodily autonomy forward.
Since then,Intersex Recognition has grown into something more than a single story. Today, it’s a place where we explore a wide range of intersex topics:
legal recognition and policy changes
medical practices and human rights
personal stories and lived experiences
the intersection of intersex identity with race, class, gender, and disability
media representation and pop culture moments
and the ongoing fight for visibility, justice, and dignity
We’re not a formal organization or advocacy group (at least not right now). This is more of a living archive and open conversation — built with the belief thatintersex voices and histories deserve space, respect, and recognition.
Why This Matters
Intersex people have always existed, but we’ve been ignored, erased, or medicalized in ways that have caused real harm. For too long, conversations about sex and gender have been dominated by binary thinking, often excluding or misrepresenting intersex realities.
That’s why this site exists: to document, reflect, question, and celebrate. We believe in the power of storytelling, transparency, and truth-telling — and we want to make it easier for people to learn, connect, and take action.
Whether you’re intersex yourself, figuring things out, working in policy or healthcare, or just here to learn — we’re glad you found us.
