At SXSW 2005, we premiered the emotional and heartbreaking documentaryYou’re Gonna Miss Me (directed by Keven McAlester), a portrait of legendary (but troubled) psychedelic rocker Roky Erickson. The film received a very warm reception, helped by the fact that Roky has lived in Austin for many years. And, as soon as it premiered, it more or less vanished from the scene. It played a few more festivals around the globe, earning acclaim, but it never received any distribution. A big element in that, was the fact thatYou’re Gonna Miss found itself on the festival circuit alongside the two other acclaimed troubled-musicians-from-Texas documentaries:The Devil and Daniel Johnston andBe Here To Love Me. Both of which nailed a headstart by premiering months before, soYou’re Gonna Miss Me ended up lost in that shuffle.
Fast forward a bit, andYou’re Gonna Miss Me gets an unexpected second wind, helped by a recent nomination for Best Documentary at the Independent Spirit Awards. And, this June, Palm Pictures will finally release this wonderful doc in theaters and DVD. Check it out, and rediscover the amazing and sad journey of the enormously talented Rocky Erickson.Click here to watch the new trailer forYou’re Gonna Miss Me.
