Attack on Belfast city centre foiled

SECURITY forces in Northern Ireland believe they have prevented a major IRA bomb attack on Belfast city centre.

More than a ton of fertiliser - the main component of home-made explosives - was found at two locations in republican west Belfast. One man was arrested. The discovery came during a 24-hour operation which coincided with an increase in security. Road blocks were set up on all major routes in to the city.

On Saturday night, a bomb demolished a bus shelter in Londonderry as an Army patrol was passing. No one was injured.

A 29-year-old man was recovering in hospital yesterday after being shot in the leg at Ballyclare, Co Antrim. Later, two guns were found and a man was arrested.
