Born into a German / Austrian family in Sunnyside, Queens, New York,the Harter family settled in Bellerose, Queens, New York. Roy begantaking piano lessons at the age of 9.
Harter's first band was the art-rock band "Matisse" which he formedwhile attending Chaminade High School in Mineola, Long Island. By theage of 14, Harter was spending his summers interning at Hip PocketRecording Studios, where he assisted alongside television composerEddie Jobson and developed an interest in commercial music andpost-production.
He went on to graduate from St. John's University, in Jamaica, Queens,where he earned a Bachelor's Degree in Communications and a MinorDegree in International Studies, due to a year spent studying inBudapest, Hungary. Harter first began playing keyboards professionallywith Chrysalis recording artist Fabulon while still in college. At thetime, the instability of a life as a touring musician reaffirmed hisinterest in seeking work at a recording studio.
In 1995 Harter accepted an entry-level position at Superdupe Studios inNew York, where he worked as a tape duplicator. It was around this timewhen Roy moved to Woodside, Queens, New York, and began meeting andperforming alongside many Irish musicians in the local pubs. After twoyears he accepted another position at Clack / Hothead Studios where heeventually rose to full-fledged audio engineer and sound designer.Harter began offering his services as a composer, and soon foundhimself writing music for his clients' television spots and films.
In 2003 Harter became co-owner of the audio division of the televisionpost-production facility Editional Effects, (EENYC) located in TimesSquare, New York City. He set up and ran their audio division.
In 2008 Roy founded his current television and film post-productionfacility, SkinnyMan, located in Times Square's historic ParamountBuilding.
Starting in 2011, Roy has become a character on "The Davey Mac SportsProgram", hosted by Dave McDonald on SiriusXM. He plays themusical-sidekick character "Roy Shaffer", and accompanies the show'smusical guests.
As comfortable on the stage, as he is in the studio, Roy spends hissummers performing with various acts on the European music festivalcircuit. Some of the artists he has performed or recorded with include:Ray Wylie Hubbard, Damien Dempsey, Goldblade, Dan Donnelly, TheFabulous Good Time Party Boys, Men With Ven, and The Levellers.
He lives a surprisingly quiet life in Manhasset, Long Island with thiswife, two children, and two dogs.
