Loyal Griggs entered the film industry in the mid-1920s, directly outof high school, as an assistant in the special effects department ofParamount. He was a cameraman for nearly 30 years before graduating todirector of photography, and he proved his worth by winning an AcademyAward for cinematography forShane (1953), just two years after hiselevation to lighting cameraman.
