Infinite Space Tops Japanese Charts

Platinum's second title off to a great start in its home territory.

Platinum Games' first game was Mad World. It was exclusively released to Western markets, meaning the Japan-based studio didn't get to see the fruit of their long work on their own soil.

It's a different story for the upstart's second game.Infinite Space hit Japan first last week through Sega. So how did it do?

For the answer, we turn to Media Create's latest sales charts, covering June 8 through June 14. Over this week, Infinite Space, or Mugen Kourou as it's known there, sold 38,000 units. Although not particularly high, this was actually good enough for first place.

Infinite Space's sales figures for the week may actually not be indicative of the game's potential. Media Create reports a 92% sell-through rate, which is basically a sellout. Expect the game to place highly next week as well.

Here's the full top ten for what was overall a slow week:

  • 1. Infinite Space (Sega, DS): 38,000 (new)
  • 2.Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days (Square Enix, DS): 28,000 (429,000)
  • 3. Sloane and McHale's Mystery Adventure (Level-5, DS): 26,000 (128,000)
  • 4.Ace Attorney Investigations (Capcom, NDS): 18,000 (233,000)
  • 5. Dynasty Warriors 6 Empires (Koei, PS3): 14,000 (117,000)
  • 6. Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G PSP the Best (Capcom, PSP): 13,000 (735,000)
  • 7. New Play Control Chibi Robo! (Nintendo, Wii): 11,000 (new)
  • 8. Wii Fit (Nintendo, Wii): 10,000 (3,454,000)
  • 9. Evangelion Jo (Namco Bandai, PSP): 8,000 (23,000)
  • 10. Arc Rise Fantasia (MMV, Wii): 8,000 (34,000)
Similar to the slow software market, hardware saw decreases almost across the board. The notable exception was the Xbox 360. The system got pretty close to the PS3 this past week, for no immediately apparently reason.

Here's the full hardware list. Last week's sales are in parenthesis:

  • DSi: 36,872 (38,783)
  • PSP: 26,904 (29,070)
  • Wii: 18,442 (17,177)
  • PS3: 10,009 (10,173)
  • Xbox 360: 8,015 (6,625)
  • DS Lite: 5,408 (5,664)
  • PS2 :3,498 (4,096)
Nintendo's heavily hyped Friend Collection, a DS virtual world for your Miis, came out this week and will likely make it to the top of next week's charts. After that, it should be Wii Sports Resort all the way!
