===============================INTRODUCTION==============================

Today's Pokemon is Regice! The third and final member of the legendaryRegi trio, Regice doesn't really deserve to be called a "Regi" at all...unlesshe fancies himself to be of the exceedingly rare (heretofore unheard of,in fact) "Ce" type. Guess they thought "Reg trio" sounded stupid and thatthe less confusing Japanese hypenazation (Regice vs. Regi-Ice) wasn't coolenough for us elitist Americans. Feh. I don't think I'll get all that farinsulting this thing considering more trainers than not are hopelesslyin love with it, so expect today's review to be more grudgingly acceptingthan demeaning...I might manage to sneak a quick barb in here and there,but for the most part I fancy keeping my hide in one piece.

    I suppose Regice really is a fitting enough subject today; afteran uncharacteristically warm autumn and a rather slow start to winter,my little area of the globe suddenly finds itself gripped by a cold snapthe likes of which we seldom see. And yet I'm sitting here sipping a nice,icy glass of soda while nursing a cold because I'm an idiot...though thatDOES make me wish I had a Regice of my very own. Oh sure, an Alakazam mightbe able to do your homework for ya and a Dragonite might be able to flyyou around places, but really, of all the pokemon we may want to bringto the "real" world who could POSSIBLY be more practical than Regice? Ican't get through a single drink without all of the ice in my glass melting;I want a Regice so I can periodically hack off parts of its body and usethem to keep my stuff cold (considering his Pokedex entry says not evensubmergence in hot magma would be enough to melt Regice)!!

    ...okay, so I'm still warped. o.0

    Anyway, Regice seems to have carved out quite a nice little nichefor himself in the Pokemon World as of late...given that Glalie blows,Articuno is thus far unavailable and Walrein just can't live up to theawesome legacy left by Lapras, there is a great void left in the realmof Ice types that can only be filled by a hulking, frigid robot-beast withevil yellow eyes. The fact that Regice's Special Attack is great and hisSpecial Defense is MONSTROUS certainly doesn't hurt matters, either. Likeit or not this is the one Regi you're apt to encounter in trainer battlesmore than any other, so ya might as well get used to it.

    In the spirit of obviousness, Ice Beam gets the first nod today.What can be said about Ice Beam that hasn't already been said roughly tenbillion times? The move is still powerful, accurate and subject to Regice'ssexy STAB, so remember to use it if ya got it. Regice is probably one ofthe single best Pokemon choices for use against the many popular Dragon/Flyingtypes out there thanks to both Ice Beam and his mammoth 499 Special Defense,considering many of them can be found sporting Flamethrower these days.Under normal circumstances Ice Beam will end up being Regice's main attackingmoves, and don't forget it also stands a 10% chance of freezing an opponentsolid. Nice. Of course you won't be able to breed Ice Beam from Regiceto any other pokemon, but this is fortunately one of those TMs that youcan purchase again and again so long as you have the resources.

    Thunderbolt is next up on our roster. Why? At this point the generalconsensus seems to be "Why not?" (Wynaut!!). Regirock and Registeel bothpossess acceptable Attack stats and learn a whole slew of physical attackswith which to take advantage of that fact. Regice's only acceptable offensivestat is his Special Attack, and he learns...Ice Beam and Thunderbolt. Talkabout getting the short end of the stick (oh, by the way, Regice...Farfetch'dcalled; he wants his Stick back). Well, at least Thunderbolt isn't pointedlyineffective against any of the types Ice IS pointedly ineffective against,and it'll come in handy against those ultra-popular and resistant-to-IceWater types. Hey, if nothing else it'll give Regice something to use againstthe odd offensive Skarmory (Steel Wing, anybody?).

    Everybody loves non-offensive moves, right? I do believe Toxic isthe standard for Regice, but since I'm not in a "standard" mood today andI recommend Toxic on far too many pokemon as it is I'd rather explore acouple of Regice's colder possibilities. Ice truly does boast some of thecoolest/most interesting stat affecting moves in the game, and while Regicecan't learn the most popular of these (Haze, obviously), he does have Hailand Icy Wind at his disposal. I normally don't like Hail since it's likelyto end up hurting your own party as well as your opponent's, but with Regice'ssolid defenses he ought to have time to wait out the full five turns, andof course it's nice to have a weather-altering move on board to cancelout any OTHER weather effects that might come into play (particularly SunnyDay, in this particular instance). On the other hand, Icy Wind is a weakoffensive attack that is generally used solely to cripple an opponent'sSpeed, something the pokey Regice will definitely want to look into ifhe considers himself an offensive attack as opposed to an annoyer (annoyershave time to wait on their opponent, but if you're going to just flat-outattack you'll generally find going first to be a big advantage...but watchout for those Mirror Coaters :p).

    Last up we have Rest, simply because that's what EVERYBODY useson their Regi of choice. It's a shame Regice can't learn Iron Defense toget his Defense up to the level of his Special Defense, but on the wholehe should still be living long enough to make Rest more than worthwhile.Use Rest to freshen up after absorbing a few heavy hits and/or to rid Regiceof any status afflictions he may find himself on the receiving end of andhe should be sitting pretty in the ring for quite some time.

    Regice gets Leftovers today because his awesome defensive statsand plentiful HP make them exceedingly useful...I feel like a broken recordhere. Chesto Berry might be considered as an alternative since Regice doesn'thave *quite* the staying power of Registeel, but he should be able to survivea Rest in decent condition without it more often than not. And is it evenworth bringing up the pointless yet moderately interesting fact that whileall the Regis possess the "Clear Body" characteristic, Regice is the onlyone of 'em who actually HAS a clear body?

    If there are no Hazers on the horizon and you fancy taking yourRegice in a different direction than most, you might consider giving itCurse and ditching Thunderbolt for one of the many physical attacks thething stands to learn. Brick Break or SuperPower would be my top recommendationfor dealing with those irritating Rock and Steel types, though AncientPower'schance of an all-stat boost is always incredibly handy. Toxic has alreadybeen mentioned as standard, and Amnesia is always an option if a SpecialDefense of 499 somehow isn't good enough for you. Safeguard grants Regicethe opportunity to be something of a pseudo-passer should he be so inclined.Explosion is fiendishly fun as always (Regice's Attack might blow, butElectrode's is lower and we still use THAT thing as an Exploder), and DoubleTeam and Protect are still acceptable both for stalling and merely as fillermoves. That's actually about all you can do with Regice; he may be themost popular Regi, but he also just happens to be the least versatile.Well, if you're in the mood for tinkering with Hidden Power you might seeif you can get a decent Water one to deal with Regice's defensive weaknessesto Fire and Rock.

    Okay, now I'm cold. I've been trying in vain to get warm all week,so I just HAD to go and write about a freakin' Ice type of all things.Meh. Since my frozen fingers don't want to type much more without threateningto snap off we'll keep this conclusion short and sweet: Regice is a respectablebattler with awesome stats, but since he's a legendary he doesn't get anyparticular props for that. As long as we are without Lapras Regice willlikely remain the single best Ice type out there, so go ahead and use thething if this most chilling Pokemon type appeals to you. Now, seeing ashow Regice is the "Iceberg Pokemon"...who wants to take bets on how longit'll be before the S.S. Tidal smashes into one, sinks and they make asappy and WAAAAY too long love movie about the whole affair starring ayoung boy and an older woman (hmmm, what couple in the Pokemon World dowe know who fits THAT description)? Hey, I'd pay to go see it if only forthe chance to see Ash committed to a frigid and watery grave.

    Alrighty then, have fun experimenting with this gleaming glacialgargantuan, and come back on Monday to see a creature who most likely hatesRegice with a passion showcased here on Pokemon of the Day!
