UMass Holds Special Jersey Retirement For Former Women’s Soccer Players April Kater & Briana Scurry

The women’s soccer program will hold an alumnae game and a jersey retirement that will see former U.S. women’s national soccer goalkeeper Briana Scurry’s number retired.

The UMass women’s soccer program will hold a jersey retirement ceremony for alumnae April Kater ‘91 and former U.S. women’s national team member Briana Scurry ‘95 at the team’s annual banquet on April 26. These two special players will be the first two jerseys retired for the women’s soccer program and 10th overall in UMass’ athletic program history.

Scurry led the team to a 17-3-3 record and to the semifinals of the NCAA Women’s Soccer Championship in 1993, as well as titles in the Atlantic 10 Conference regular season and tournament.

After college, Scurry would earn 173 caps for the US from 1994-2008, starting 159 of those games, finishing with a record of 133-12-14 as well as recording 71 shutouts. She was also member of the Gold Medal-winning USWNT team at the 1996 Olympic games and the 1999 Women’s World Cup champion’s team.

During the Kater-Scurry era, UMass’ women’s soccer program enjoyed great success and accolades including six NCAA Tournament appearances over seven seasons (1987-1990) and two trips to the College Cup. This would culminate in becoming NCAA runners-up and recording an overall record of 50-9-6 (.815).

After the jersey retirement ceremony, there will be an UMass women’s soccer alumnae game on Rudd Field at 1 p.m.
