Desmond Bane

October 22nd, 2025 at 3:38pm CST by Luke Adams

Speaking toFred Katz of The Athletic,Hawks big manKristaps Porzingis revealed that the mysterious illness that affected him late in the 2024/25 season and in the playoffs was eventually diagnosed as postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome. The condition, known as POTS, causes a person’s heart to beat faster than normal when he sits or stands up and can result in extreme exhaustion or dizziness when it goes untreated or undiagnosed.

“You know how people say, ‘Oh, I’m so fatigued.’ I’ve never used those words. I don’t even like to speak in those terms, but I really was like that,” Porziņgis said.“At that time, I could just lay on the couch and be a house cat.”

According to Katz, after getting a diagnosis confirmed, Porzingis has been able to manage the condition without medication — a high-salt diet and a more regimented resting schedule (off the court) are among the key factors.

Within his larger story about Porzingis and the Hawks, Katz notes that the offseason traded to Atlanta came as a bit of a surprise to the big man, since his agent had been keeping him up to speed on Boston’s trade discussions with three other teams: theClippers,Spurs, andSuns. While Porzingis may have been surprised to learn of his landing spot, he wasn’t upset about it.

“We are an aspiring team, a young team that aspires to win a championship one day, and that’s the cool part,”Porziņgis said.“Even by the betting odds, we’re not too far off.”

Here’s more from around the Southeast:

  • AlthoughTyler Herroexpressed last month that he hoped to reach an agreement with theHeat on a contract extension before the season began, he also made it clear he wouldn’t let it affect his play if they couldn’t come to terms, writesAnthony Chiang of The Miami Herald. As Chiang details, Herro’s window to negotiate an extension will reopen on July 1, 2026 and will remain open either until he signs a new contract or through the entire 2026/27 league year, all the way up until June 30, 2027.
  • Josh Robbins of The Athletic spoke to five rival talent evaluators around the NBA about the upside of the new-lookMagic and how the additions ofDesmond Bane andTyus Jones will impact the club.“They finally addressed their shooting, and they addressed it coherently and skillfully and efficiently with the two guys,” one scout said.“… (Jones) is not perfect, but he never makes a mistake, and he makes threes, and he can run a team, and he is a true point guard, which they didn’t have. … KCP didn’t work out, and Bane is younger and better, maybe not quite the defender, not quite as big. But he’s a better play-maker. He’s a good play-maker. He’s got secondary ball-handling skills.”
  • The longest-tenured member of theHornets‘ roster,Miles Bridges has never won more than 43 games in a season or made the playoffs during his time in the NBA, but that hasn’t dampened his enthusiasm for playing in Charlotte, asRoderick Boone of The Charlotte Observer relays (subscription required).“Man, I love the city of Charlotte,”Bridges said.“I’m happy to be here. I’m just hoping to reward the city with some wins. That’s all I’ve been talking about since I’ve been here. I think this is the year to do it.” The veteran forward added that he’s fully locked in on finding ways to win games this season and isn’t thinking about his individual stats at all:“I want to actually contribute to winning this year. That’s doing what I need to do. Defense, rebound and scoring the ball. I feel like I could do it all. But (it’s about) just helping this team out the right way.”

TheMagic took a major gamble bytrading forDesmond Bane, butPaolo Banchero believes the high-scoring guard is exactly what Orlando needs to be a serious contender in the East, writesMarc J. Spears of Andscape. The team sent a lot of assets to Memphis in return, parting withKentavious Caldwell-Pope,Cole Anthony, four unprotected first-round picks and a first-round swap. Banchero has no doubt that Bane will be worth the high price.

“It’s a great fit for who we are as a team,”he said. “He adds what we’re missing, and he also adds to what we already have. It’s like the perfect match. We don’t have anybody who can make shots like him, who can kind of leverage the way he is able to make shots, then make plays for others and get downhill and create. He’s a Swiss Army knife just as a player, as a guard. He is stronger than 99 percent of the guards in the league with how he’s built. He’s going to fit into what we do.”

Bane tells Spears that he received a Father’s Day text fromGrizzlies general managerZach Kleiman, along with a request to talk right away. Kleiman followed up by FaceTiming him to break the news of the trade. Even though Bane was caught by surprise after spending his first five NBA seasons in Memphis, he insists there’s “no bad blood at all” and he’s happy to be in a good situation in Orlando. He also regrets that the Grizzlies weren’t able to make a long playoff run while the foundation of the team was together.

“I feel like we never really got a chance to see what it would be like for a full season with our core and everybody healthy,”Bane said. “But you can only wait so long. In this business, you only got so many years to make something happen.”

There’s more from Orlando:

  • Jamahl Mosely hadJalen Suggs andMoritz Wagner serve as coaches during Wednesday’s scrimmage, perJason Beede of The Orlando Sentinel. Suggs is still recovering from a left knee trochlea cartilage tear that ended his season in January, while Wagner is rehabbing a torn ACL in his left knee. Since they couldn’t participate in the scrimmage, Mosely decided to give them a different perspective.“It’s huge because it talks about communicating,” he said. “It keeps communication as the high priority. You’ve got to be able to communicate with your teammates the things that you see, what you want, the standard that we’ve set. I’ve said this before but it’s easy for coaches to say things, to put things on boards, to watch it on film … It becomes real when these guys can repeat it back to you and they can repeat the message of what they’re calling themselves to do.”
  • Franz Wagner sat out the first preseason contest after an active summer at EuroBasket, but he’s hoping to get back on the court in at least one of the next three games, Beede adds.“Yeah, I definitely want to play, get out there with the guys and get a couple minutes,”Wagner said. “Not that much time before the first real game.”
  • In aseparate story, Beede examines the importance of this season forAnthony Black andJett Howard, who will both become eligible for rookie scale extensions next summer.
October 5th, 2025 at 9:01pm CST by Eli Cohen

TheMagic played their preseason opener on Saturday, picking up a 126-118 win over the Heat. While preseason action can only tell you so much, Orlando was able to get some valuable information on some of their new guys, as well as seeing their roster mainstays in action.

One of the standouts of the game was rookie guardJase Richardson, writes Jason Beede of the Orlando Sentinel (subscriber link).

The 25th pick in the 2025 draft, Richardson came out of the gate cold and later admitted to feeling the nerves in his first real NBA action, but he quickly settled into the rhythm of the game. He finished with a team-high 13 points on 5-of-11 shooting, including 3-of-3 from three, along with four rebounds, two assists, and a steal.

There’s just a level of confidence that he possesses reading the game, recognizing what guys are doing and how they’re playing him,” said head coachJamahl Mosley. “His speed is such a big advantage for him, but then the other side of it is we talked all the time about how inquisitive he is and how he wants to know what to do in any situation.”

While the backup point guard spot will likely be primarily manned byTyus Jones onceJalen Suggs recovers from injury, Richardson’s ability to function as an on- or off-ball player could help him carve out a role sooner rather than later if he’s able to maintain his aggression and shooting efficiency.

We have more from the Magic:

  • Paolo Banchero is known as an offensive star, but his biggest impact against the Heat came on the defensive end. Beede writes that it wasn’t simply the three blocks in 13 minutes that were encouraging, but also the manner in which they came: one in isolation, another as a weak side rotation, and finally a chase-down block in transition.“That’s what it’s going to take for us to win at the highest level,” Mosely said. “If he plays with that energy and effort each and every single night defensively, it’s going to be a long night for a lot of people.”
  • The trade to acquire sharp-shooting guardDesmond Bane was clearly made to bring more shooting to the Magic’s offense, which has struggled with efficiency in recent years. In his first action with the team, Bane provided more than floor spacing, according to Beede, who says Orlando’s new wing also helped push the pace in transition and opened up looks for teammates with his ability to catch and attack with the ball. Beede adds that the chemistry between former teammates Bane and Jones was immediately noticeable. Given his gravity as a shooter, that ability should help generate offense for a team that, at times, got bogged down in mid-range-heavy isolation play last season.
  • Franz Wagner, Banchero’s co-star, missed the preseason opener, butaccording to Beede, this wasn’t due to an injury, but rather was an assigned rest following his run to the gold medal with Germany at EuroBasket.

Responding to a question aboutKevin Porter Jr.‘s increased responsibilities in 2025/26 now thatDamian Lillard is no longer on the roster,Bucks head coachDoc Rivers suggested that the plan will be to start Porter at point guard, as Eric Nehm of The Athletic relays (via Twitter).

“He started out as a high draft pick. He started. They put the ball in his hands. He could literally take any shot and he did,”Rivers said.“And now he comes from that, from not playing at times, coming off the bench, being out of the league, to now back to starting. And that’s a huge a responsibility for him to run the team and still be aggressive. That’s the hardest thing to do, I think, in basketball is from the point guard, understand when and when. It’s just hard, and so I’m sure at times he’ll be great at it and then at times he may struggle at it, but we’ll support him and get him right.”

As Rivers alluded to in his comments, Porter was the starting point guard in Houston from 2021-23, but was out of the NBA during the 2023/24 season due to a domestic violenceincident.

Returning to action last season, Porter was up and down for the Clippers, but thrived following a deadline deal to Milwaukee. In 30 regular season outings for the Bucks, he averaged 11.7 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 3.7 assists in 19.9 minutes per game and posted a shooting line of .494/.408/.871.

Here’s more from around the Eastern Conference:

  • Brian Robb of MassLive.com shares his takeaways from theCeltics‘ first day of practice on Tuesday, which featured an appearance from former Grizzlies head coachTaylor Jenkins. Jenkins got a first-hand look at another former Grizzly, big manXavier Tillman, who appears to be back to 100% after being plagued by knee issues in 2024/25.“From just a playing perspective, (last season) was very hard,”Tillman said, per Robb. “Just wanting to play, wanting to contribute. But I also knew I was going through stuff myself. My knee would have days where it would just swell up into a balloon after I had one scrimmage or stuff like that. So I knew consistency-wise, I could be there to kind of support. But as far as my actual play, I couldn’t do everything I wanted to do.”
  • Speaking of former Grizzlies,Magic newcomersDesmond Bane andTyus Jones also played together in Memphis under Jenkins, and their chemistry has been on display so far at Orlando’s training camp, asJoe Vardon of The Athletic details.“There’s a comfort level that they have with one another,”head coachJamahl Mosley said of the duo.“Their veteran leadership, knowing that they’re calling each other out, going to the same baskets. There’s just something about them and their experience through this league that just says, one, they’ve been together before and, if I didn’t (already) know it, I would have thought it.”
  • TheHornetsofficially announced a series of changes and additions to their basketball operations staff, including confirming that former Villanova head coachKyle Neptune as been hired as an assistant coach, as wasfirst reported in August.
  • Although he admits he was “shocked” and disappointed when he tore his Achilles last fall,Pacers centerJames Wiseman said he got through the recovery process “one day at a time” and believes he’s now in the best shape of his career, writesDustin Dopirak of The Indianapolis Star. According to head coachRick Carlisle, Wiseman was one of the team’s best performers in a conditioning test last week.“You think about what he’s gone through with his rehab and everything else and this is a week before camp, he’s out there with some of our best conditioned wings and guards,”Carlisle said.“That’s a strong statement.”

AsMagic guardJalen Suggs continues to make his way back from a left knee trochlea cartilage tear that has sidelined him since January, the team is targeting opening night for his return, president of basketball operationsJeff Weltman said on Monday, according toJason Beede of The Orlando Sentinel (subscription required).

Suggs had originally hoped to be back to 100% for the start of training camp, but now the plan will be to use camp and the preseason as a ramp-up period. As Beede writes, the goal will be to get him on the court in one of Orlando’s four preseason games before the regular season tips off.

Moritz Wagner, the Magic big man who is coming off a left ACL tear, isn’t quite as far along as Suggs, Weltman acknowledged on Monday.

“Moe’s timeline is different,”Weltman said. “He’s further away. You guys know there have been unfortunately a series of ACLs in the last decade of the NBA and an associated timeline with that. But you guys also know Moe Wagner. So, he’s not your normal guy. He’s attacking it. and we’re hopeful he can beat that timeline. What that looks like exactly is too soon to say.”

Wagner said he has gotten through the injury rehab portion of his recovery process and is now working on getting back into game shape, according to Beede. At the team’s first practice on Tuesday, Suggs was able to take part in “all of the non-contact drills,” per head coachJamahl Mosley, while Wagner did many of the same drills but was “probably two steps back” of Suggs in terms of progress (Twitterlinks).

Here’s more on the Magic:

  • Adjusting to a new team after spending the first five years of his NBA career in Memphis has been “pretty easy” so far,Desmond Bane said on Tuesday (Twitter video link via Beede).“They’re such good guys that they make it easy to come in here and get our work done so it’s been good,” Bane said of his new teammates.
  • After appearing in just 11 games across three seasons from 2020-23, Magic forwardJonathan Isaac played in 58 in 2023/24 and 71 last season. Will that number continue to rise in 2025/26?“My goal this season is 82,” Isaac said at media day, noting that he dropped some weight in the offseason (Twitter link via Beede).“If nothing happens, if I don’t get any colds or sicknesses or anything like that, I should be fine to go 82.”
  • Speaking to reporters on Monday, including Beede (Twitter link), veteran point guardTyus Jones said the chance to potentially compete for a championship was an important factor in his decision to sign with Orlando.
  • Star Magic forwardPaolo Banchero, who signed a five-year, maximum-salary rookie scale extension in July, said it was an “amazing feeling” to lock in that deal and expressed enthusiasm about the moves the front office made to upgrade the roster over the summer. “I’m definitely happy with the moves the organization made,” Banchero said (subscriber-only story via Beede).“[They] brought in two great, experienced players (Bane and Jones) in here and drafted two great rookies (Jase Richardson andNoah Penda). So, [I’m] just excited to get to work with the group and get on the court and start building that chemistry.”

NewMagic swingmanDesmond Bane feels good about how he’ll fit alongside star forwardsPaolo Banchero andFranz Wagner, tellingMark Medina of Sportskeeda.com that he thinks his skill set “complements those guys very well” and will help “open up the floor for them to attack and do their thing.” Bane also pointed to Orlando’s roster versatility when asked why he’s confident about the team’s ability to be a contender in 2025/26.

“I think we can play so many different lineups,”he told Medina.“We have so many different handlers. We have so many different screeners. We have guys that can get baskets one-on-one when the game slows down and you get into crunch time. So we really have a lot of tools on this roster.

“It’s always easy to talk this highly at this time of the year. But once you get into December, some guys are playing well, some guys aren’t, some guys are in the rotation, some guys aren’t. That’s when teams really have a choice to come together or split. So we have a long way to go. It’s a long journey. But we got good people in the building and people that work hard and care. So I think that gives us a chance. That’s all you can ask for.”

Bane will be playing for a new team for the first time since entering the NBA in 2020 — he spent his first five professional seasons with theGrizzlies, who traded him to Orlando in June. Speaking to Medina, the 27-year-old made it clear he harbors no ill will toward his former team for ending their relationship over the summer.

“I’m rooting for Memphis 80 games out of the year,” Bane said.“I hope they do well. I got a lot of guys out of there that are up for contracts and things like that. So I want it to work out for them and that they get everything that they deserve. So I’m looking forward toward seeing how they do, and hoping for the best of them. There’s no bad blood at all.”

We have more from around the Southeast:

  • Heat guardDru Smith, who tore his Achilles last December, has resumed five-on-five work, a league source tellsIra Winderman of The South Florida Sun Sentinel (subscription required). Smith re-signed with Miami this summer on a three-year, minimum-salary deal, though only the first season is guaranteed.

Most notably,Brittni Donaldson has moved from an assistant coaching role to the front office as Atlanta’s director of basketball development, methodology, and integration, whileMychel Thompson (Klay Thompson‘s brother) has been hired as a pro scout.
  • WhileWizards general managerWill Dawkins assured fanson Wednesday that the front office has a “very clear vision” for its rebuild, he offered few specifics about the plan to turn the team from one of the league’s worst into a legitimate contender, writesJosh Robbins of The Athletic. With that in mind, Robbins reads between the lines of Dawkins’ comments in an effort to highlight the primary components of the Wizards’ approach to rebuilding, including casting a wide net for young talent, maintaining financial flexibility, and doing a good job scouting their own players.

Magic fans are embracingDesmond Bane following Orlando’s blockbuster acquisition of the scoring guard early this offseason,The Athletic’s Josh Robbins writes. Bane is feeling the love in the city.

I haven’t been to the grocery store yet, honestly,” Bane said. “But my car broke down on the side of the road today on the highway. There was a decent amount of people screaming my name outside the window. So I think that it’s safe to say that Orlando fans are excited.

The excitement surrounding Bane reflects the expectations fans have for the team. Orlando with Bane in tow looks poised to be an Eastern Conference contender this season. Bane joinsPaolo Banchero,Franz Wagner, andJalen Suggs as cornerstones of a rapidly improving roster.

As Robbins writes, the East is wide open next season. Cleveland and New York will almost certainly enter the year as favorites to win the conference, but major injuries toJayson Tatum andTyrese Haliburton have created some uncertainty at the top. The Magic are hoping to take advantage.

I don’t think that there is any limit to put on what this team can do,” Bane said. “I mean, we are a new team, adding some new pieces and things like that. But we have a very good roster in place, a lot of guys that can do a lot of different things. So it’s very exciting from that standpoint. I just want to come in and be the glue, the guy that brings his whole thing together, kind of rounds out some of the gaps that they may have had in their team.

We have more from the Southeast Division:

  • Another team that could make some noise in the Eastern Conference, theHawks, kept busy this week when they movedKobe Bufkin to the Nets. As Yossi Gozlan of the Third Apron writes (Substack subscriber link), the Hawks have done well to make moves that simultaneously keep them competitive now with an eye toward the future. The Bufkin deal gives Atlanta some added flexibility to extendDyson Daniels and/orKristaps Porzingis next year, Gozlan adds.
  • Ted Leonsis, CEO of Monumental Sports which owns theWizards and Capitals, said he wants to own MLB’s Nationals and the MLS’ D.C. United, per Greg Rosenstein of NBC (Twitter link). • Wizards sophomore guardKyshawn George got an opportunity to suit up for Canada at the AmeriCup this summer, serving as a primary scorer for the team and averaging 13.5 points per game.According to Chase Hughes of Monumental Sports Network, George believes the experience will benefit him as he rejoins the Wizards. “I think just my confidence in general [was helped], how aggressive I was with the ball whether it was creating for myself or for my teammates. It’s just up to me to keep doing that, keep getting better at it and transfer it now to the Wizards organization,” George said.

With most of the NBA’s offseason action now in the books,Chris Herring and Kevin Pelton of ESPN identify the 14 NBA “newcomers” whose changes of scenery will have the greatest impact in 2025/26.

There are no surprises at the top of the list, which features newRockets forwardKevin Durant at No. 1,Magic guardDesmond Bane at No. 2, andNuggets forwardCameron Johnson at No. 3. However, Herring and Pelton deviate a little from expectations at No. 4 by including a head coach:Mike Brown of theKnicks. As Herring writes, it’s possible no coach in the league will face more “title-or-bust pressure” than Brown in his first year on the job.

Lakers centerDeandre Ayton rounds out the top five on the 14-man list, which – outside of Brown – is made up exclusively of players.

Starting guardCoby White attended the ceremony and spoke to Chicago Sports Network about Donovan’s “amazing accomplishment” and what he likes about having him as a coach (Twitter video link).

He’s honest,” White said of Donovan. “He pushes you, he’s going to get the most out of you. And for the most part, he’s always been upfront with me.

“But he also believes in his players. He gets his players to compete every night. He builds a relationship with his players, which often times you don’t see (with NBA head coaches).”

Donovan signed amultiyear extension with the Bulls in late July, while White is entering the final year of his contract, which will pay him about $12.9MM in 2025/26.

Second-year big manAlex Sarr believes Johnson is more than capable of creating shots for both himself and others. “I like his play-making in general. I already knew that about him, but it’s just good to see. I feel like we’re just seeing the surface of what he’s capable of,” Sarr said.
  • John Wallannounced his retirement as a player last month and will cover the NBA forAmazon Prime Video in 2025/26. In an interview with Michael Lee of The Washington Post,Wall said he hopes to have his No. 2 jersey retired by theWizards.Varun Shankar of The Washington Post considers whether the Wizards should retire Wall’s jersey, noting that the former No. 1 overall pick made five All-Star appearances with the franchise and is the team’s all-time leader in both assists and steals. While it’s been a long time since the organization has retired a player’s jersey, Shankar believes Wall could be a “logical” choice to be honored, as he was the driving force behind Washington’s “best stretch since(Wes) Unseld retired.”
  • Assistant coachGod Shammgod, whojoined Orlando this offseason after nine years in Dallas, believes theMagic have a talented roster capable of taking a step forward this season, he tellsKurt Helin of NBC Sports. “Paolo (Banchero) andFranz (Wagner) and them, they’re coming into their own right now,” Shammgod said. “They’re at the right age where they still young, but they young enough to dare.
