Free agent additionTyus Jones and trade acquisitionDesmond Bane started their second straight preseason game on Friday for theMagic, writesJason Beede of The Orlando Sentinel. The veteran guards were once again paired with mainstaysFranz Wagner,Paolo Banchero andWendell Carter Jr.
Head coachJamahl Mosley praised Carter after the 26-year-old big man accumulated 20 points, 13 rebounds and three assists in 21 minutes during the 30-point victory over Philadelphia, Beede notes.
“The work that he continues to put in, his presence around that rim, his presence on the floor, his demeanor, it changes the way we play,” Mosley said about Carter. “When he plays with that presence, that poise and that strength for our team, it goes such a long way.”
According to Beede, the first five players of the bench for Orlando wereAnthony Black,Jase Richardson,Jett Howard,Tristan Da Silva andGoga Bitadze. The Magic selected four of those players in the first round of the past three drafts, with Bitadze being the lone exception.

TheMagic took a major gamble bytrading forDesmond Bane, butPaolo Banchero believes the high-scoring guard is exactly what Orlando needs to be a serious contender in the East, writesMarc J. Spears of Andscape. The team sent a lot of assets to Memphis in return, parting withKentavious Caldwell-Pope,Cole Anthony, four unprotected first-round picks and a first-round swap. Banchero has no doubt that Bane will be worth the high price.
“It’s a great fit for who we are as a team,”he said. “He adds what we’re missing, and he also adds to what we already have. It’s like the perfect match. We don’t have anybody who can make shots like him, who can kind of leverage the way he is able to make shots, then make plays for others and get downhill and create. He’s a Swiss Army knife just as a player, as a guard. He is stronger than 99 percent of the guards in the league with how he’s built. He’s going to fit into what we do.”
Bane tells Spears that he received a Father’s Day text fromGrizzlies general managerZach Kleiman, along with a request to talk right away. Kleiman followed up by FaceTiming him to break the news of the trade. Even though Bane was caught by surprise after spending his first five NBA seasons in Memphis, he insists there’s “no bad blood at all” and he’s happy to be in a good situation in Orlando. He also regrets that the Grizzlies weren’t able to make a long playoff run while the foundation of the team was together.
“I feel like we never really got a chance to see what it would be like for a full season with our core and everybody healthy,”Bane said. “But you can only wait so long. In this business, you only got so many years to make something happen.”
There’s more from Orlando:
Fresh off winning a gold medal with Germany at EuroBasket 2025,Magic forwardFranz Wagner is elated to have an opportunity to play an NBA game in his home country in January when Orlando faces Memphis in Berlin, asJason Beede of The Orlando Sentinel writes. Wagner is also embracing loftier expectations after the Magic’s offseason trade forDesmond Bane.
“Our expectations should be higher than any of the other years,” the 6’10” forward said this week. “I mean, we added Desmond Bane [and] some other really good players to the roster. Talent-wise, mentality-wise, we should go into the year thinking like a contender — not cutting ourselves short and believing in the chance that we’ve got.”
While Wagner took a significant step forward in many respects last season, he shot below 30% from three-point range for the second year in a row after converting nearly 36% of his outside looks over his first two campaigns. He’s hoping to show his offseason work paid off entering 2025/26, according to Beede.
“I worked a lot on my three,” Wagner said about his summer.“I thought I had stretches in EuroBasket where I shot it a lot better and I think I can be more consistent with that. So, I’m super excited to show that.”
Here’s more on the Magic:
Bulls head coachBilly Donovan, who won back-to-back NCAA titles with Florida during his college coaching career, wasinducted into the Hall of Fame on Saturday. Starting guardCoby White attended the ceremony and spoke to Chicago Sports Network about Donovan’s “amazing accomplishment” and what he likes about having him as a coach (Twitter video link).
“He’s honest,” White said of Donovan. “He pushes you, he’s going to get the most out of you. And for the most part, he’s always been upfront with me.
“But he also believes in his players. He gets his players to compete every night. He builds a relationship with his players, which often times you don’t see (with NBA head coaches).”
Donovan signed amultiyear extension with the Bulls in late July, while White is entering the final year of his contract, which will pay him about $12.9MM in 2025/26.
Here are a few more notes from around the East:
Afterreporting on Friday that theHawks have shown interest in the possibility of hiring a player agent to run their front office,Marc Stein and Jake Fischer of The Stein Line (Substack link) confirm that Sportsology, the search firm leading the process, has reached out to “various agents” to gauge their interest. ASaturday report indicated thatTrae Young‘s agentAustin Brown is among the candidates to be contacted by Atlanta.
While it remains to be seen whether the Hawks will consider a move involving Young this offseason, they’re projected to be active on the trade market, according to Stein and Fischer, who note that Atlanta is expected to have some cap flexibility and owns a pair of sizabletrade exceptions. That makes the team a candidate to take on salary and acquire assets as a facilitator in multi-team deals.

VeteranMagic guardCory Joseph has enjoyed a major uptick in production with Orlando and has been a salve during the club’s playoff push, writesJason Beede of The Orlando Sentinel. As Beede notes, the 33-year-old had been a key young contributor for the title-bound Spurs over a decade ago in 2014. Now, he’s a locker room leader on a young Magic club.
“It’s amazing,” Joseph said. “I’m blessed. The organization has been amazing to me… I’m just trying to get out there and play as hard as I can to repay them for what they did for me.”
Joseph wasn’t even on a team heading into last year’s playoffs. He was sent to Indiana from Golden State at the 2024 trade deadline, but was promptly waived. This year, he seems to have found a happy home in Orlando.
With All-Defensive guardJalen Suggs out for the season, Joseph was pressed into service as a starter for 15 of the team’s last 16 games. In those bouts, Orlando posted an 11-4 record. Joseph logged averages of 6.9 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 2.7 assists across 22.2 minutes per night.
There’s more out of Orlando:
Second-yearMagic guardAnthony Black is looking to close the season on a high note, according to Jason Beede of the Orlando Sentinel. Black, who is averaging 9.0 points and 3.1 assists in 62 games, has seen his minutes increase while he’s started fewer games. His overall efficiency has declined in his second season, though his counting numbers have improved.
“Good, bad … I would say mediocre,” Black said when asked to describe his second season. “I don’t think I was able to find enough consistency in just everything I was doing but I definitely think I got a lot better with the opportunities that I’ve had. It’s been good to get some reps.”
When the Magic have been at full strength, Black’s role has been limited, but that has rarely happened this season, as Orlando has dealt with injuries affecting several key players, including guardJalen Suggs. Black is planning to take advantage of the opportunity for playing time down the stretch and is leaning on veteran teammates likeKentavious Caldwell-Pope,Cory Joseph andGary Harris for advice.
“They know what it takes to do everything that I’m trying to do,” Black said. “It’s just good having a group of older dudes that have been in the league. Definitely thankful for them.”

It’s been a week since thetrade sendingMark Williams to theLakers wasrescinded, and he still hasn’t rejoined theHornets, according toRoderick Boone of The Charlotte Observer. Charlotte played three road games since L.A. decided to void the deal due to the results of Williams’ physical, and Boone believes Hornets officials are giving him time to adjust to the shock of returning to his old team.
Boone points out that if Williams is required to resume playing immediately after the All-Star Break, his first game would be against the Lakers at Crypto.com Arena. That contest, originally scheduled for last month, was postponed due to the wildfires and rescheduled for Wednesday.
Boone notes that president of basketball operationsJeff Peterson hasn’t spoken to the media about the Lakers’ decision to call off the deal, and the organization has been silent except for a brief statement it released after the news broke last Saturday. The Hornets havecontacted the league office to explore their options, but a source tells Boone that they’re preparing for Williams’ return.
With Williams absent, centerJusuf Nurkic, who was acquired from Phoenix last week, made his Hornets debut in Wednesday’s loss at Orlando. He had nine points and seven rebounds in 16 minutes and made a positive impression on coachCharles Lee.
“I just saw a guy that obviously understands the game at a really high level,” Lee said. “His size, his physicality adds a different element to our group. Defensively, I thought he was good in helping the paint with his communication. And offensively, even showed me a little bit more. “Able to rebound and push the break and I knew he was kind of a good passer but to see him handle it in the open court and make some good decisions. … Another guy you can throw it down to in the paint when you need a bucket or he gets fouled. It was really nice to have him out there.”

Three second-year players and one rookie have been named replacements for the Rising Stars event at All-Star weekend in San Francisco, according to the NBA. The leagueissued a press release announcing the following changes:
We noted when the Rising Stars participants wereofficially revealed on Tuesday that a few replacements would be necessary. Lively is sidelined for an extended period due to astress fracture in his ankle, while Miller and McCain underwent season-ending procedures on theirright wrist andleft knee, respectively.
Wembanyama is healthy, but wasselected as an All-Star reserve for the Western Conference. Players who are named All-Stars don’t take part in the Rising Stars event.
Black, Camara, Thompson, and Dunn will be included in the 21-player pool of NBA rookies and sophomores who will be drafted into three teams of seven players apiece on February 4. Those three teams, along with a fourth club made up of seven G League standouts, will compete a mini-tournament on Friday, February 14 as part of All-Star weekend’s opening night.
The squad that wins the Rising Stars event will advance to All-Star Sunday and take on one of three teams made up of NBA All-Stars in the semifinals of thenew-look All-Star Game.
TheMagic recently provided injury updates onPaolo Banchero,Jalen Suggs andAnthony Black, asJason Beede of The Orlando Sentinel relays. All-Star forward Banchero, who has been out since Oct. 30 due to a torn abdominal muscle, was able to practice on Tuesday, but he’ll remain out for Wednesday’s contest vs. Detroit.
“Paolo was able to go through some light contact through practice, but that’s about it,” head coachJamahl Mosley said.
Banchero recentlystated that he’ll have to go through full contact work and participate in 5-on-5 scrimmages before being cleared to return.
Suggs sustained aright wrist sprain on Sunday vs. Brooklyn, but it sounds like the injury is relatively minor. The All-Defensive guard was able to practice on Tuesday and is probable for Wednesday’s game, according to Beede.
As for Black, he did not practice on Tuesday and is questionable for today’s game due to a lower back contusion. The second-year guard has missed one game to this point with the injury.
