October 11th, 2025 at 11:03am CST by Rory Maher

Free agent additionTyus Jones and trade acquisitionDesmond Bane started their second straight preseason game on Friday for theMagic, writesJason Beede of The Orlando Sentinel. The veteran guards were once again paired with mainstaysFranz Wagner,Paolo Banchero andWendell Carter Jr.

Head coachJamahl Mosley praised Carter after the 26-year-old big man accumulated 20 points, 13 rebounds and three assists in 21 minutes during the 30-point victory over Philadelphia, Beede notes.

The work that he continues to put in, his presence around that rim, his presence on the floor, his demeanor, it changes the way we play,” Mosley said about Carter. “When he plays with that presence, that poise and that strength for our team, it goes such a long way.”

According to Beede, the first five players of the bench for Orlando wereAnthony Black,Jase Richardson,Jett Howard,Tristan Da Silva andGoga Bitadze. The Magic selected four of those players in the first round of the past three drafts, with Bitadze being the lone exception.

Here are a few more notes from around the Southeast Division:

  • While president of basketball operationsJeff Weltmansaid a couple weeks ago that theMagic were targeting opening night forJalen Suggs‘ return from the left knee injury that has sidelined him since January, the team continues to take a cautious approach to his recovery. Mosley said before Friday’s contest that Suggs has done a limited amount of contact work to this point, according toBeede. “We’re slowly ramping him up,” Mosley said. “I think he’s different in the sense that how he responds to what we do on a day-to-day [basis]. He’s been in some 5-on-0, does that, not much contact in situations. But slowly trying to bake him in there. As we go on the next couple weeks, we’ll be able to see and tell more from that.”
  • Forward/centerPrecious Achiuwa went unsigned for most of the offseason before agreeing to a non-guaranteed training camp deal with theHeat inlate September. Achiuwa, who was drafted by Miami and spent his rookie year with the team before being traded to Toronto in the 2021 offseason, said he’s happy to be back with his first NBA team, asAnthony Chiang of The Miami Herald relays. “I think there’s some unfinished business,” Achiuwa said of returning to the Heat. “Just the culture of the Miami Heat kind of fits the way I play. A lot of tenacity, a lot of intensity. So I feel right at home here.”
  • Brandon Miller has been impressed with fellow wingKon Knueppel during training camp and preseason, perRoderick Boone of The Charlotte Observer. “Definitely a great competitor,” Miller said of Knueppel. “He’s going to have a great career in this league. I’m rooting. We’re going to be right there behind him, supporting him as he continues to get better every day. So, hats off to him for coming in with the most confidence, just continue to have that confidence and that competitive spirit. You can’t ask for much more from him.” Miller was the No. 2 overall pick of the 2023 draft, while Knueppel was selected fourth overall in June.

TheMagic took a major gamble bytrading forDesmond Bane, butPaolo Banchero believes the high-scoring guard is exactly what Orlando needs to be a serious contender in the East, writesMarc J. Spears of Andscape. The team sent a lot of assets to Memphis in return, parting withKentavious Caldwell-Pope,Cole Anthony, four unprotected first-round picks and a first-round swap. Banchero has no doubt that Bane will be worth the high price.

“It’s a great fit for who we are as a team,”he said. “He adds what we’re missing, and he also adds to what we already have. It’s like the perfect match. We don’t have anybody who can make shots like him, who can kind of leverage the way he is able to make shots, then make plays for others and get downhill and create. He’s a Swiss Army knife just as a player, as a guard. He is stronger than 99 percent of the guards in the league with how he’s built. He’s going to fit into what we do.”

Bane tells Spears that he received a Father’s Day text fromGrizzlies general managerZach Kleiman, along with a request to talk right away. Kleiman followed up by FaceTiming him to break the news of the trade. Even though Bane was caught by surprise after spending his first five NBA seasons in Memphis, he insists there’s “no bad blood at all” and he’s happy to be in a good situation in Orlando. He also regrets that the Grizzlies weren’t able to make a long playoff run while the foundation of the team was together.

“I feel like we never really got a chance to see what it would be like for a full season with our core and everybody healthy,”Bane said. “But you can only wait so long. In this business, you only got so many years to make something happen.”

There’s more from Orlando:

  • Jamahl Mosely hadJalen Suggs andMoritz Wagner serve as coaches during Wednesday’s scrimmage, perJason Beede of The Orlando Sentinel. Suggs is still recovering from a left knee trochlea cartilage tear that ended his season in January, while Wagner is rehabbing a torn ACL in his left knee. Since they couldn’t participate in the scrimmage, Mosely decided to give them a different perspective.“It’s huge because it talks about communicating,” he said. “It keeps communication as the high priority. You’ve got to be able to communicate with your teammates the things that you see, what you want, the standard that we’ve set. I’ve said this before but it’s easy for coaches to say things, to put things on boards, to watch it on film … It becomes real when these guys can repeat it back to you and they can repeat the message of what they’re calling themselves to do.”
  • Franz Wagner sat out the first preseason contest after an active summer at EuroBasket, but he’s hoping to get back on the court in at least one of the next three games, Beede adds.“Yeah, I definitely want to play, get out there with the guys and get a couple minutes,”Wagner said. “Not that much time before the first real game.”
  • In aseparate story, Beede examines the importance of this season forAnthony Black andJett Howard, who will both become eligible for rookie scale extensions next summer.
October 2nd, 2025 at 4:16pm CST by Rory Maher

Fresh off winning a gold medal with Germany at EuroBasket 2025,Magic forwardFranz Wagner is elated to have an opportunity to play an NBA game in his home country in January when Orlando faces Memphis in Berlin, asJason Beede of The Orlando Sentinel writes. Wagner is also embracing loftier expectations after the Magic’s offseason trade forDesmond Bane.

Our expectations should be higher than any of the other years,” the 6’10” forward said this week. “I mean, we added Desmond Bane [and] some other really good players to the roster. Talent-wise, mentality-wise, we should go into the year thinking like a contender — not cutting ourselves short and believing in the chance that we’ve got.”

While Wagner took a significant step forward in many respects last season, he shot below 30% from three-point range for the second year in a row after converting nearly 36% of his outside looks over his first two campaigns. He’s hoping to show his offseason work paid off entering 2025/26, according to Beede.

I worked a lot on my three,” Wagner said about his summer.“I thought I had stretches in EuroBasket where I shot it a lot better and I think I can be more consistent with that. So, I’m super excited to show that.”

Here’s more on the Magic:

  • President of basketball operationsJeff Weltman recently spoke glowingly of centerWendell Carter Jr. For his part, the 26-year-old big man says he’s feeling great after a healthy offseason (story via Beede). “My confidence is at an all-time high right now,” Carter said. “I’m feeling good. When I had this summer just to train, it wasn’t necessarily about me becoming a better shooter — I know I can shoot. It wasn’t about me being able to make moves in the post like I know I can do. It was just about me boosting my confidence. Because the more you work, the more you’re on the court, you get out there and you feel like, ‘OK, I know this is going in,’ even if it doesn’t. I know it feels good. I shot a million of these shots throughout the summer.”
  • GuardAnthony Black feels comfortable in his third training camp with Orlando, according toBeede. The 21-year-old will be eligible for a rookie scale extension next summer. “When AB is on his game, in my opinion, he’s one of the best guards in this league,” Carter said. “When he’s playing carefree — not saying careless — when he’s just flowing and relying on his strengths, getting downhill, attacking the basket, shooting open threes, not turning them down, AB is a tough guard. He’s tough to guard for anybody. Anyone else would say that on this team, coaching staff included. When AB is just playing his game, he’s very hard to guard.”
  • After Thursday’s practice, rookie first-rounderJase Richardson discussed the physical adjustment of going from college to playing in the NBA and what his role has been so far in training camp (Twittervideo links via Beede). “Just being a guy who’s willing to guard,” the 6’3″ guard said. “I think that’s the biggest thing for me. I have to show that I can guard, especially at my size.”

Bulls head coachBilly Donovan, who won back-to-back NCAA titles with Florida during his college coaching career, wasinducted into the Hall of Fame on Saturday. Starting guardCoby White attended the ceremony and spoke to Chicago Sports Network about Donovan’s “amazing accomplishment” and what he likes about having him as a coach (Twitter video link).

He’s honest,” White said of Donovan. “He pushes you, he’s going to get the most out of you. And for the most part, he’s always been upfront with me.

“But he also believes in his players. He gets his players to compete every night. He builds a relationship with his players, which often times you don’t see (with NBA head coaches).”

Donovan signed amultiyear extension with the Bulls in late July, while White is entering the final year of his contract, which will pay him about $12.9MM in 2025/26.

Here are a few more notes from around the East:

  • Wizards lottery pickTre JohnsonIII was viewed as one of the best shooters entering the 2025 draft but he also displayed improved ball-handling a couple months ago at Las Vegas Summer League, writesChase Hughes of Monumental Sports Network. “I watch bits and pieces ofKyrie (Irving) andDarius Garland, just from a guard’s perspective how they can change speeds,” Johnson said. Second-year big manAlex Sarr believes Johnson is more than capable of creating shots for both himself and others. “I like his play-making in general. I already knew that about him, but it’s just good to see. I feel like we’re just seeing the surface of what he’s capable of,” Sarr said.
  • John Wallannounced his retirement as a player last month and will cover the NBA forAmazon Prime Video in 2025/26. In an interview with Michael Lee of The Washington Post,Wall said he hopes to have his No. 2 jersey retired by theWizards.Varun Shankar of The Washington Post considers whether the Wizards should retire Wall’s jersey, noting that the former No. 1 overall pick made five All-Star appearances with the franchise and is the team’s all-time leader in both assists and steals. While it’s been a long time since the organization has retired a player’s jersey, Shankar believes Wall could be a “logical” choice to be honored, as he was the driving force behind Washington’s “best stretch since(Wes) Unseld retired.”
  • Assistant coachGod Shammgod, whojoined Orlando this offseason after nine years in Dallas, believes theMagic have a talented roster capable of taking a step forward this season, he tellsKurt Helin of NBC Sports. “Paolo (Banchero) andFranz (Wagner) and them, they’re coming into their own right now,” Shammgod said. “They’re at the right age where they still young, but they young enough to dare. Dare to be great. And I believe like Paolo and Franz is going to be great, butDesmond Bane,Jalen Suggs,Anthony Black, we gotTyus Jones. Now we got so many great players. … And I feel like right now they all are ready to make their mark. So I’m just happy and honored to be a part of it.”

Afterreporting on Friday that theHawks have shown interest in the possibility of hiring a player agent to run their front office,Marc Stein and Jake Fischer of The Stein Line (Substack link) confirm that Sportsology, the search firm leading the process, has reached out to “various agents” to gauge their interest. ASaturday report indicated thatTrae Young‘s agentAustin Brown is among the candidates to be contacted by Atlanta.

While it remains to be seen whether the Hawks will consider a move involving Young this offseason, they’re projected to be active on the trade market, according to Stein and Fischer, who note that Atlanta is expected to have some cap flexibility and owns a pair of sizabletrade exceptions. That makes the team a candidate to take on salary and acquire assets as a facilitator in multi-team deals.

Here’s more from around the Southeast:

  • TheHornets are among the teams with the most at stake in tonight’s draft lottery, statesRoderick Boone of The Charlotte Observer. Charlotte has a 14% chance to land the top pick and add a franchise-changing talent inCooper Flagg, but there are several prospects who would be useful additions to the team’s young core.“This is a great draft class,”Miles Bridges said. “They have a talented draft class. It would be really big if we could get No. 1 or even No. 2. But it will be big for us.”
  • Flagg would also be a monumental addition for theWizards, who also have a 14% shot at the No. 1 pick and are assured of finishing in the top six.David Aldridge and Josh Robbins of the Athletic look at Washington’s likely selections with each of their potential picks, noting that the choices would get much murkier once Flagg andDylan Harper are off the board.
  • Speaking toRaul Barrigon of HoopsHype,Wizards forwardBilal Coulibaly discussed his goals this offseason (working on his handle and three-point shot), the most difficult NBA player to defend (De’Aaron Fox, due to his speed), and his plans to play for France in EuroBasket 2025, among other topics.
  • Injuries to hisMagic teammates created opportunities for second-year guardAnthony Black, but he often didn’t shoot well enough to take advantage of them, perJason Beede of The Orlando Sentinel. Black plans to spend the offseason working on his overall offensive game, including shooting, dribbling, scoring through contact and creating his own shots.“I look forward to helping this team win,”Black said.“This summer is going to be all about figuring out how to do that, how they want me to do that and try to maximize that. I know I can contribute a lot to the team next year.”

VeteranMagic guardCory Joseph has enjoyed a major uptick in production with Orlando and has been a salve during the club’s playoff push, writesJason Beede of The Orlando Sentinel. As Beede notes, the 33-year-old had been a key young contributor for the title-bound Spurs over a decade ago in 2014. Now, he’s a locker room leader on a young Magic club.

“It’s amazing,” Joseph said. “I’m blessed. The organization has been amazing to me… I’m just trying to get out there and play as hard as I can to repay them for what they did for me.”

Joseph wasn’t even on a team heading into last year’s playoffs. He was sent to Indiana from Golden State at the 2024 trade deadline, but was promptly waived. This year, he seems to have found a happy home in Orlando.

With All-Defensive guardJalen Suggs out for the season, Joseph was pressed into service as a starter for 15 of the team’s last 16 games. In those bouts, Orlando posted an 11-4 record. Joseph logged averages of 6.9 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 2.7 assists across 22.2 minutes per night.

There’s more out of Orlando:

  • All-Star Magic forwardPaolo Banchero reflected on the challenge of facing off against fellow former Duke Blue DevilJayson Tatum‘s Celtics in the latest chapter of his season-long diary, as told toMarc J. Spears of Andscape.“They’re in the Eastern Conference finals damn near every year,” Banchero told Spears.“We’ve had success against them in the regular season and throughout my time here, but playoffs is a different ballgame. They’re going to be ready. They are part of a championship team so they are not going to lay down. You have to match their level of intensity. You know the challenge they present. They got talent all over the floor. So, it’s going to take a special effort from us to beat them.”
  • Second-year Magic wingAnthony Black has been trending in the right direction ahead of Orlando’s playoff run, writes Beede inanother Orlando Sentinel story. Across Orlando’s last 12 contests of the regular season, including nine victories, Black posted averages of 12.1 PPG, 4.3 RPG, 3.3 APG and 1.4 SPG while shooting 35.9% shooting from distance.“I feel like back half of the season I’ve been shooting the ball better, playing better overall,” Black said.“That game was a must-win so it’s good to have a little bit of success in those games, but the playoffs are different.”
  • In case you missed it, Magic guardCole Anthony seems to bestabilizing following an up-and-down regular season just in time for the playoffs. He notched 26 points and dished out six dimes while helping the Magic defeat the Hawks during their play-in tournament encounter on Tuesday.

Second-yearMagic guardAnthony Black is looking to close the season on a high note, according to Jason Beede of the Orlando Sentinel. Black, who is averaging 9.0 points and 3.1 assists in 62 games, has seen his minutes increase while he’s started fewer games. His overall efficiency has declined in his second season, though his counting numbers have improved.

Good, bad … I would say mediocre,” Black said when asked to describe his second season. “I don’t think I was able to find enough consistency in just everything I was doing but I definitely think I got a lot better with the opportunities that I’ve had. It’s been good to get some reps.

When the Magic have been at full strength, Black’s role has been limited, but that has rarely happened this season, as Orlando has dealt with injuries affecting several key players, including guardJalen Suggs. Black is planning to take advantage of the opportunity for playing time down the stretch and is leaning on veteran teammates likeKentavious Caldwell-Pope,Cory Joseph andGary Harris for advice.

They know what it takes to do everything that I’m trying to do,” Black said. “It’s just good having a group of older dudes that have been in the league. Definitely thankful for them.

We have more from the Southeast Division:

  • TheMagic are searching for good vibes as they prepare for the third game of a five-game road trip,Beede writes in a separate story. Orlando currently averages the fewest points in the league (104.3), so increasing that number has been a focal point for the team, which currently holds the eighth seed in the East. “Practice was great. There was a focus on creating offense, stepping into shots with confidence, execution,” head coachJamahl Mosley said. “Those small pieces are what we really, really honed in on.”
  • Hawks guardVit Krejci recently returned from an extended absence due to a lumbar fracture. He’s become a key piece of Atlanta’s rotation over the past year and is averaging 7.0 points in 41 games (15 starts) this season. As Caleb Johnson of 92.9 The Game (Twitter link) relays, Krejci said this week that he also was dealing with a sprained right wrist at the same time as his lumbar fracture, and that both injuries occurred on the same play. He made his return on March 10.
  • TheWizards have played better as of late, with five wins in their past nine games, but all their recent moves have been made with an eye toward the future. With that in mind,Varun Shankar of The Washington Post takes a closer look at the strides that potential building blocks likeAJ Johnson,Bilal Coulibaly (who is out now due to injury), andKyshawn George have taken. As Shankar notes, Johnson played his most minutes in a Wizards jersey on Monday, registering six assists in a loss to Toronto.

It’s been a week since thetrade sendingMark Williams to theLakers wasrescinded, and he still hasn’t rejoined theHornets, according toRoderick Boone of The Charlotte Observer. Charlotte played three road games since L.A. decided to void the deal due to the results of Williams’ physical, and Boone believes Hornets officials are giving him time to adjust to the shock of returning to his old team.

Boone points out that if Williams is required to resume playing immediately after the All-Star Break, his first game would be against the Lakers at Crypto.com Arena. That contest, originally scheduled for last month, was postponed due to the wildfires and rescheduled for Wednesday.

Boone notes that president of basketball operationsJeff Peterson hasn’t spoken to the media about the Lakers’ decision to call off the deal, and the organization has been silent except for a brief statement it released after the news broke last Saturday. The Hornets havecontacted the league office to explore their options, but a source tells Boone that they’re preparing for Williams’ return.

With Williams absent, centerJusuf Nurkic, who was acquired from Phoenix last week, made his Hornets debut in Wednesday’s loss at Orlando. He had nine points and seven rebounds in 16 minutes and made a positive impression on coachCharles Lee.

“I just saw a guy that obviously understands the game at a really high level,” Lee said. “His size, his physicality adds a different element to our group. Defensively, I thought he was good in helping the paint with his communication. And offensively, even showed me a little bit more. “Able to rebound and push the break and I knew he was kind of a good passer but to see him handle it in the open court and make some good decisions. … Another guy you can throw it down to in the paint when you need a bucket or he gets fouled. It was really nice to have him out there.”

There’s more from the Southeast Division:

  • The two-way contract that Damion Baughsigned with theHornets this week will also cover next season, according to Michael Scotto of HoopsHype (Twitter link). The 24-year-old shooting guard had a strong NBA debut Wednesday with 16 points, five rebounds and three assists off the bench
  • Magic coachJamahl Mosley believesAnthony Black andTristan Da Silva will benefit from their first trip to All-Star Weekend, perJason Beede of The Orlando Sentinel. Both players took part in the Rising Stars event Friday night.“It does something when you go to the All-Star game,” Mosley said.“You get to see the league in a different light. You get to be around your peers that you know are at a certain level, and then it instills a little bit of confidence knowing that you belong in that class.
  • Wizards rookie centerAlex Sarr, another Rising Stars participant, talked toVarun Shankar of The Washington Post about not getting dragged down by difficult moments as he adjusts to the NBA.“I just try to go to the next play because there’s so many plays,”Sarr said. “Who cares you lost the ball? Who cares you missed the shot? Move on and just do something else.”
January 31st, 2025 at 4:48pm CST by Luke Adams

Three second-year players and one rookie have been named replacements for the Rising Stars event at All-Star weekend in San Francisco, according to the NBA. The leagueissued a press release announcing the following changes:

We noted when the Rising Stars participants wereofficially revealed on Tuesday that a few replacements would be necessary. Lively is sidelined for an extended period due to astress fracture in his ankle, while Miller and McCain underwent season-ending procedures on theirright wrist andleft knee, respectively.

Wembanyama is healthy, but wasselected as an All-Star reserve for the Western Conference. Players who are named All-Stars don’t take part in the Rising Stars event.

Black, Camara, Thompson, and Dunn will be included in the 21-player pool of NBA rookies and sophomores who will be drafted into three teams of seven players apiece on February 4. Those three teams, along with a fourth club made up of seven G League standouts, will compete a mini-tournament on Friday, February 14 as part of All-Star weekend’s opening night.

The squad that wins the Rising Stars event will advance to All-Star Sunday and take on one of three teams made up of NBA All-Stars in the semifinals of thenew-look All-Star Game.

TheMagic recently provided injury updates onPaolo Banchero,Jalen Suggs andAnthony Black, asJason Beede of The Orlando Sentinel relays. All-Star forward Banchero, who has been out since Oct. 30 due to a torn abdominal muscle, was able to practice on Tuesday, but he’ll remain out for Wednesday’s contest vs. Detroit.

Paolo was able to go through some light contact through practice, but that’s about it,” head coachJamahl Mosley said.

Banchero recentlystated that he’ll have to go through full contact work and participate in 5-on-5 scrimmages before being cleared to return.

Suggs sustained aright wrist sprain on Sunday vs. Brooklyn, but it sounds like the injury is relatively minor. The All-Defensive guard was able to practice on Tuesday and is probable for Wednesday’s game, according to Beede.

As for Black, he did not practice on Tuesday and is questionable for today’s game due to a lower back contusion. The second-year guard has missed one game to this point with the injury.

Here are a few more notes from the Southeast Division:

  • Despite significant injuries to Banchero,Franz Wagner and most recentlyMoritz Wagner, who is out for the season aftertearing his ACL, theMagic have remained highly competitive, currently holding a 20-14 record, good for the No. 4 seed in the East. In asubscriber-only column for The Orlando Sentinel, Mike Bianchi argues that Mosley should be the frontrunner for the NBA’s Coach of the Year award for the way he’s managed the team — and the resilience the club has displayed — amid the absences.
  • In a post-game interview on NBA TV (Twitter video link), former NBA head coachSam Mitchell noted thatHawks forwardJalen Johnson has started to receive someAll-Star buzz. Asked if he’s been thinking about that possibility, Johnson said it’s a secondary priority.I’ve got All-Star on my mind, but there’s more important things at task right now and that’s winning,” he said.
  • Last Friday, theHawkssigned guard/forwardDaeqwon Plowden to a two-way contract. The deal covers two years, tweets Keith Smith of Spotrac, which means Plowden will be eligible for restricted free agency in 2026. All two-way deals are non-guaranteed, however, so it’s certainly not a lock that Plowden will still be on Atlanta’s roster by that point.
