Box Office Report: ‘Jack the Giant Slayer’ Grosses Tepid $400K in Midnight Runs

Box Office: 'Jack the Giant Slayer' Grosses Tepid $400K in Midnight Runs

Big-budget 3D event picJack the Giant Slayergrossed a soft $400,000 from Thursday night and midnight runs as it began its worldwide assault.

From directorBryan Singer,Jack’smidnight grosses came in behind the $500,000 earned by last year’s troubled March tentpoleJohn Carter, which went on to post a weekend debut of roughly $30 million.Jackrolled out at 10p.m. in 2,000 theaters.

The revisionist fairy tale, from New Line and Legendary Pictures and based on the classic storyJack and the Beanstalk, cost nearly $200 million to produce. Warner Bros., New Line’s parent company, is distributing the movie.

Insiders at Warner Bros. say the film’s midnight earnings are indeed a good result, considering older kids and parents aren’t yet available to seeJack. The release of the PG-13 tentpole was delayed from June 2012 to make it more kid-friendly.

In comparingJackwith other family friendly fantasy-adventures, Warners notes thatPercy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thiefgrossed $215,000 in midnight runs on its way to a three-day opening of $30.2 million in February 2010.

Still,Jackis facing the prospect of a soft domestic run and will need to do strong business internationally if it is to make back its budget and marketing spend, which amounts to nearly $300 million.

In February, Paramount’s R-ratedHansel & Gretel: Witch Huntersgrossed $500,000 in midnight runs on its way to a weekend debut of $19.6 million.
