Frosting for cakes and cupcakes is made with softened butter, powdered sugar, vanilla extract and a bit of milk. If you’re making chocolate frosting, you’ll add HERSHEY’S Cocoa. Frosting for cookies has a different consistency, made with powdered sugar, corn syrup, vanilla and a bit of milk or water.
Tip: If the cake is going to be sitting out in an environment that is warm like outside. Replace part or all of the butter with shortening which has a high melting point. Butter-made frosting will melt if it is left out in a warm place.
To get the ideal consistency for your frosting, you could try to add a bit more powdered sugar. Make sure you incorporate it one tablespoon at a time to make sure you don’t make it too sweet. Instead of sugar you could also try cornstarch, cocoa powder, peanut butter or cream cheese.
If your frosting is too thick, try adding a teaspoon at a time of milk or water. You could also try whipping it with a hand mixer to incorporate some air.

You can finish off a cake with a delicatecocoa glaze instead of a layer of icing. Simply combine and heat cocoa, water, corn syrup, and butter in a saucepan, stirring constantly. Then remove from heat, add powdered sugar and vanilla, and beat until smooth.
