What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

In todays rapidly evolving media landscape, investigative journalism faces an array of challenges. Corporate influences, legal threats, government censorship and rampant disinformation threaten to obfuscate the truth from global citizens who need it most. Without vigilant media working together to uncover injustice, corruption thrives, perpetuating inequality and compromising the foundations of democracy. Our organization provides a resolute response to these challenges.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

What is the organization aiming to accomplish?

ICIJ's mission is to bring accountability on a global scale. As a network of investigative journalists, we believe it is our job to arm citizens with information so that they feel empowered. We believe that truth is society's best weapon against corruption, injustice, and inequality.

We produce investigative projects that uncover hidden truths, expose corruption, and spark global changes and public dialogue. We seek to bring a new kind of scrutiny to world events and complex problems - using data and document-supported facts that cannot be easily dismissed.

We also aim to serve the global journalism community by providing resources, data and opportunities for collaboration. Our unique and ground-breaking collaborative model allows us to build critical relationships with journalists in all corners of the world. As a result, we can produce stories on global issues and generate impact that no single outlet could create on its own. Our commitment to training and learning by doing" provides journalists with opportunities to build their expertise and skills to help them produce great investigative stories.

What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?

Collaboration is at the center of everything we do. We pioneered a groundbreaking model that has reshaped investigative journalism on a global scale.

Here's how it works: we identify compelling stories and bring them to a global team of reporters and news outlets. In turn, they contribute on-the-ground reporting with nuanced local context. They also contribute graphic and design work and disseminate our collaborative journalism to their audiences.

ICIJ is the hub of the organization. We use targeted training to prepare our partners and specialized technology to securely disperse information across continents. The partners gain access to invaluable resources data, tools, technology, training and mentorship.

The result is impactful journalism that no single news outlet could produce on its own.

What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?

ICIJ has a team of almost 50 experienced professionals including reporters, editors, researchers, data analysts, developers and support staff based around the world. Our staff is multi-lingual and geographically diverse, reflecting the global nature of the journalists we collaborate with and the readers we serve.

Our extensive network comprises 290 investigative journalists in more than 100 countries who collaborate on in-depth stories.

ICIJ has developed a suite of tools used to ensure secure communications and information sharing that allow for teams of journalists to work together across continents. We also tend to work with large data sets, both publicly available information as well as leaked data. Our data team processes and analyzes data in ways that yield unique insights, enabling deep, impactful, contextual stories.

What have they accomplished so far and what's next?

Our work has had worldwide and long-last impact. Our stories have sparked debate, prompted changes to laws, led to criminal indictments and even brought down governments.

Our Panama Papers investigation is widely regarded as one of the biggest stories of the 21st Century. Our investigation revealed vast financial networks used by the rich and powerful to conceal wealth and avoid taxes.

Our Pandora Papers project was the largest cross-border investigation in history, involving more than 600 journalists from 150 media outlets worldwide. At the center of the project were almost 12 million confidential documents that exposed the secret financial structures that wealthy and powerful people use to hide assets, evade taxes and conceal illicit dealings.

Most recently, Cyprus Confidential examined how lax oversight allowed illicit financial transactions to flow through the island nation, benefitting oligarchs who were integral to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

ICIJs unique collaborations have been recognized and honored by some of journalisms most prestigious prizes, including the Pulitzer Prize, and in 2021, we were nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for our role in exposing illicit financial flows and promoting transparency in the global economy.

We are a tech-driven organization that constantly innovates. ICIJ is seen as a leader in data journalism and journalism technology, with a highly sophisticated data team made up of journalists, researchers, developers, and analysts. Our digital innovations, our secure international network, and our access, through whistleblowers, to gigantic data sets that exist nowhere else, allow us to dig out information that would otherwise be hidden from view.

And we don't keep our date to ourselves. Our Offshore Leaks Database, which we make fully available for free on our website, includes data about 785,000 offshore companies, foundations, and trusts. It is frequently used by other journalists, university researchers, government authorities and the general public to conduct their own investigations.

Our 2024-26 strategic plan sets us on a course to incorporate the newest technologies, including artificial intelligence and machine learning so we can dive deeper into our data sets. It puts us on course to further diversify our revenue sources, expand our reach, improve audience engagement and add new network members in news deserts around the globe so we can keep exposing wrongdoing so the world can make it right.
