The Acura ZDX
The Acura ZDX debuted for the 2010 model year as a mid‑size luxury “four‑door sport coupe” built on the MDX platform. With its sloping roofline and coupe‑like proportions, the original ZDX was intended to be a design statement rather than a high‑volume SUV. After a short production run of just a few years, Acura discontinued the model at the end of the 2013 model year due to modest sales. The nameplate returned for 2024 as Acura’s first all‑electric SUV, reflecting the brand’s pivot toward electrification.
Sales Data & Trends
Sales of the first‑generation ZDX were limited; fewer than 7,200 examples were sold between the 2010 and 2013 model years. The model’s niche positioning and distinctive styling kept volumes low, leading Acura to cancel it after 2013. When the ZDX returned as an all‑electric SUV in 2024, initial demand was stronger: Acura sold about 10,335 units in the first half of 2025, representing around 15 % of the brand’s U.S. sales. However, Honda announced in September 2025 that production of the electric ZDX would end because of changing market conditions.
First Generation (2010–2013)
The original ZDX shared its platform with the Acura MDX and came with a 3.7‑liter V‑‑66 engine producing about 300 horsepower and 270 lb‑ft of torque. Power was sent through a 6‑speed automatic transmission to Acura’s Super Handling All‑Wheel Drive system, giving the crossover coupe confident traction in all conditions. Inside, the ZDX featured a driver‑oriented cockpit and high‑quality materials. Despite its dramatic fastback styling, its limited rear headroom and cargo space reduced its practicality, and the model never gained mainstream popularity.
Second Generation: All‑Electric ZDX (2024)
The ZDX name returned for 2024 on Acura’s first battery‑electric SUV. Developed in partnership with General Motors, the new ZDX rides on GM’s Ultium platform and is built at GM’s Spring Hill, Tennessee plant. The base A‑Spec trim uses a single rear‑mounted motor rated at 358 horsepower, with an optional dual‑motor setup offering 490 hp and all‑wheel drive. The performance‑oriented Type S model features dual motors producing 499 hp, adaptive air suspension and Brembo brakes. Range estimates are 313 miles for the single‑motor A‑Spec, 304 miles for the dual‑motor A‑Spec and 278 miles for the Type S. Despite a promising launch, Honda announced in September 2025 that production of the electric ZDX would cease due to weaker‑than‑expected EV demand.
