Toyota Highlander
Here you will find monthly and yearly Canadian and U.S. sales figures for the Toyota Highlander. The Toyota Highlander is a mid-size crossover SUV that has been a part of Toyota’s lineup since it was first introduced in 2000. Known for its reliability, comfort, and family-friendly features, the Highlander became one of the more popular SUVs in its segment before Toyota expanded the nameplate in 2023 with the larger Grand Highlander.
The fourth-generation Highlander, introduced in 2019 for the 2020 model year, brought notable changes in design, technology, and powertrain options, including an enhanced hybrid version. In 2023, Toyota introduced the Grand Highlander as a separate, larger three-row model, which now accounts for a significant share of what was previously Highlander volume.
Toyota Highlander Overview
The Toyota Highlander is a mid-size crossover SUV that has been in production since 2000. It is known for its comfortable ride, spacious interior, and comprehensive standard features. For the 2025 model year, the Highlander is available in LE, XLE, Limited, and Platinum trims.
All 2025 Highlanders are powered by a 2.4L turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 265 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. A hybrid variant pairs a 2.5L four-cylinder with an electric motor system producing a combined 243 horsepower. EPA fuel economy ratings range from 22 city/29 highway for the turbocharged model to 36 city/35 highway for the hybrid.
The Highlander seats up to eight passengers in three rows and offers cargo capacity of 16 cubic feet behind the third row, expanding to 73.3 cubic feet with both rear rows folded.
Note: Beginning in 2023, Toyota split its Highlander lineup by introducing the Grand Highlander as a separate, larger model. Combined Highlander family sales (Highlander plus Grand Highlander) totaled approximately 217,500 units in 2023 and 161,400 units in 2024, compared to 169,500 and 89,700 for the standard Highlander alone.

Toyota Highlander Generations
First Generation (2001–2007)
The first-generation Highlander was based on the Toyota Camry platform and was available in front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive configurations. It was initially powered by a 2.4L four-cylinder or 3.0L V6 engine, with a hybrid variant added in 2006. The Highlander Hybrid was among the first hybrid SUVs on the market.
Second Generation (2008–2013)
The second-generation Highlander grew in size and moved to the Toyota K platform. It was powered by a 2.7L four-cylinder or 3.5L V6 engine producing up to 270 horsepower. A hybrid variant continued, and seating capacity increased to eight with an optional third row.
Third Generation (2014–2019)
The third-generation Highlander continued on an updated K platform with refreshed styling and improved interior quality. The 3.5L V6 produced 295 horsepower, and the hybrid system delivered improved efficiency. This generation established the Highlander as a consistent 200,000-plus annual seller in the U.S.
Fourth Generation (2020–present)
The fourth-generation Highlander moved to the Toyota TNGA-K platform, offering improved handling dynamics and interior space. The 3.5L V6 continued initially, later replaced by a 2.4L turbocharged four-cylinder for 2024. The hybrid system was significantly updated with improved fuel economy. This generation peaked at 264,128 U.S. sales in 2021 before the 2023 introduction of the Grand Highlander redistributed volume across the expanded Highlander family.
