The suggestion comes as Prime Minister Boris Johnson confirmed he will join in with a “national clap” to honour the life of Captain Moore tonight after his death from Covid-19 at the age of 100.

The House of Commons also fell silent in tribute to him before Prime Minister’s Question at 12pm today, the Birmingham Mail reports.

People across the country are paying tribute to the retired Army officer who became a national treasure after raising nearly £33m for NHS charities by walking laps of his garden.

Knowles, who helped get a fence built for Sir Tom to help him retain some privacy amid the glare of the world's media, told the PA news agency: "That is my suggestion. Let's get a statue of him up on the fourth plinth in Trafalgar Square and let that be a focus for positivity.
