Fresno, CA. train station

Built by the San Francisco & San Joaquin Valley Railroad in 1899 that was sold to Santa Fe. A $6 million renovation by the City of Fresno was recently completed. It has lots of available office space but Amtrak seems to be the only current tenant.

The San Francisco & San Joaquin Valley Railroad was a privately funded project in the 1890's conceived to compete with the Southern Pacific "Octopus" that was greatly over charging Valley farmers for shipping to San Francisco. Before the SF&SJV was completed it was sold to Santa Fe giving AT&SF a route into San Francisco for the first time. Three original stations built by San Francisco & San Joaquin Valley Railroad still exist serving Amtrak passengers. This one in Fresno, a nearly identical station in Stockton (www.flickr.com/photos/84263554@N00/367506245/in/set-72157... ), and a third station in Hanford (www.flickr.com/photos/84263554@N00/2176822124/ ). A few other original stations can still be found along the road used for non-railroad purposes (www.flickr.com/photos/84263554@N00/2182553924/ ).
