Father: Christopher Michael Flanagan
Mother: Maria Rachel Cunningham
informant: Christopher S. Flanagan, Jr.
Christopher S. (Christie) Flanagan, Sr., prominent Port Arthur shipping man and one of the city's earliest settlers, died today about 11 a.m. following a heart attack suffered at his home, 1347 Proctor street. Mr. Flanagan celebrated his 66th birthday last Dec. 26. Funeral services for Mr. Flanagan will be held Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic church. Burial will be in Magnolia cemetery in Beaumont under the direction of Grammiers. Widely-known in national shipping circles and an active leader in Port Arthur civic and religious undertakings for many years, Mr. Flanagan was first stricken today about 2 a.m., members of his family reported. He suffered a second attack shortly before 11 a.m. Born in Quebec, Canada on Dec. 26, 1876, Mr. Flanagan first came to Port Arthur in 1898, the year that the city was named, to join his father, the late C. Flanagan, in the stevedoring business. After leaving the city for a brief period, he returned in 1900 and for a number of years was associated with the stevedoring concern of C. Flanagan and Sons along with his father and three brothers, R.P., Frank C., and James J. Flanagan. For the past few years, he and his son, Christie Flanagan, Jr., had been partners in C.S. Flanagan and Co. stevedoring and steamship firm. Mr. Flanagan also served here as vice counsel of the Argentine republic. A member of St. Mary's Catholic church, he had always taken an active part in church affairs, and had befriended many churches besides St. Mary's in a charitable manner. He was chairman of Draft Board No. 4, a director of the First National bank, and a member of Port Arthur Country club. Throughout his residence in Port Arthur, Mr. Flanagan along with other members of the shipping concerns with which he was associated took leading roles in the development of the port, including the intra-coastal waterway with which the city is now linked. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. C.S. Flanagan, Sr.; three brothers, R.P., Frank C. and James J. Flanagan; and the son, Christie, Jr., former all-America football player, all of Port Arthur.
