Politician. He was the Mayor of Indianapolis from 1895 to 1901 and a senator for Indiana in 1916. He was an Irish immigrant who became a power player in state and national politics. During his term as Indianapolis mayor, he started the Indianapolis park system, and the city acquired hundreds of acres. He later chaired the Democratic National Committee. As co-owner of the French Lick Springs Hotel, he was rumored to have had an interest in illegal gambling operations.
