Playwright. He gained fame as a French playwright who was considered the "Father of Modern Farce", a precursor to Vaudeville. He wrote seventeen full-length plays and 20 comedic monologues between 1886 and 1914. Works like "A Flea In Her Ear" in 1907 and "I Don't Cheap on My Husband" in 1914 bordered on the absurd but were wildly popular then as well as for years after his death. After numerous failures, he studied the art of writing comedies underEugene Labiche and others. He was the son of Ernest Feydeau, a noted writer and scholar who encouraged his son to write, and Lodzia Zelewka, a twenty-year younger Polish beauty. After his father's death, his mother married theatre critic,Henri Fouquier in 1876. In 1889 he married Marie Anne Carolus Duran, the daughter of a wealthy portrait painter. The couple had four children before divorcing in 1916. He battled depression and an addiction to gambling. Three years later, he contracted syphilis which led to mental illness with him dying two years later at the age of 58 in a sanatorium.
