After his father's death, his mother married theatre critic,Henri Fouquier in 1876. In 1889 he married Marie Anne Carolus Duran, the daughter of a wealthy portrait painter. The couple had four children before divorcing in 1916. He battled depression and an addiction to gambling. Three years later, he contracted syphilis which led to mental illness with him dying two years later at the age of 58 in a sanatorium.
