Mining tycoon, philanthropist, art patron. He was the senior member of the firm of Guggenheim brothers and last survivor of the seven sons of Meyer Guggenheim. As a multi-millionaire copper king he also founded the Yukon Gold Company in Alaska. As head of the family firm, Guggenheim was director of a number of metals corporations including Kennecott Copper, Braden Copper, Pacific Tin, and the Nevada Northern Railway Company. He was also a major stock holder of Anaconda Copper Mining Company. As a noted art collector, he established the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation to foster the appreciation of the modern form of non-objective painting. The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York City, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, holds much of his collection and was named in his honor. Additional Guggenheim Museums that hold his art collection are located in Venice, Italy; Spain; Guadalajara, Mexico; Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates; Lithuania and Las Vegas.
