Motion Picture Director, Producer. Born Samuel Grosvenor Wood in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, he began his career on the staff ofCecil B. DeMille as an assistant director in 1915. He made his debut as a solo director for the film "City Sparrow" (1920) and went on to a long association with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) in 1927. His many credits included "A Night at the Opera" (1935), "A Day at the Races" (1937), "Goodbye, Mr. Chips" (1939), as a co-director for "Gone with the Wind" (1939), "Kitty Foyle" (1940), "Kings Row" (1942), "The Pride of the Yankees" (1942), "For Whom the Bell Tolls" (1943) and "Ivy" (1947).
