Songwriter, Motion Picture Screenwriter. His career covered motion pictures and the stage which garnered him Academy Awards, in addition to Tony Award nominations. He was educated at University College School and Gonville and Caius College at Cambridge. While at the later, he served as president of the University Footlights Review and Musical Comedy Club while earning his Master of Arts degree. He acquired experience on London's East End as he co-penned, directed and performed in the plays "Out of the Blue," Lady at the Wheel" and in 1956, he wrote his first film screenplay "Charley Moon" which was directed by Guy Hamilton. During the 1960s, he formed a highly-successful songwriting partnership with Anthony Newley which resulted in the Broadway plays "Stop the World- I Want to Get Off" (1962 to 1964) and "The Roar of the Greasepaint- The Smell of the Crowd" (1965). Both received Tony Award nominations. The pair received Grammy Awards for Best Original Cast Show Album with "Stop the World- I Want to Get Off" and for the song "What Kind of Fool Am I?" initially recorded by Sammy Davis Jr. in 1962. He received an Academy Award for Best Music, Original Music Score for the song "Talk to the Animals" from the film "Doctor Dolittle" (1967). During the 1970s, he compiled additional Oscar nominations for "Goodbye, Mr. Chips" with John Williams, "Scrooge" (1970) and "Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory" (1971) with Anthony Newley. He collaborated with Henry Mancini for the film "Victor/ Victoria" (1982) which earned him his second Academy Award. Other Oscar nominations include "That's Life!" (1986) with Henry Mancini," "Home Alone" (1990) with John Williams and "Hook" (1991) with John Williams. Other memorable songs he contributed to include "Goldfinger" (1964) from the 'James Bond' film series, "Feeling Good" (1964) recorded by Nina Simone, "You Only Live Twice" (1967) from the 'James Bond' film series, "Two For the Road" (from the 1967 film of the same title) with Henry Mancini and the Sammy Davis Jr. hit "The Candy Man" (1971, with Anthony Newley) from the film "Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory." In 1997, he received an additional Tony Award nomination for the Broadway play "Jekyll & Hyde" (1997 to 2001). In 2001, he was named Officer of the Order of the British Empire for his contributions to film industry and theatre. He was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1989. He was married to actress Yvonne Romain from 1958 until his death.
