Presidential Cabinet Secretary, US Congressman, US Senator. He served in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War, rising to Colonel and and Quartermaster General. In 1791 he was appointed as United States Postmaster General in the cabinet of President George Washington's first administration, succeeding Samuel Osgood to be the second man to hold the office. In 1795 he was appointed as Secretary of War, holding that office until the end of the year, when he was appointed as the third United States Secretary of State, following Edmund Randolph. He continued in the office after John Adams was inaugurated as the 2nd President, but was dismissed by President Adams in 1800 over disputes over peace negotiations with France. In 1803 he was elected as a Federalist Senator from Massachusetts to the United States Senate, serving until 1811. In 1813 he was elected as a Federalist At-Large delegate from Massachusetts to the United Stats House of Representatives, where he served from 1813 to 1817 (from 1815 to 1817 he represent the state's 2nd Congressional District).
