His films included A Kind of Loving, Billy Liar, Darling, Far From the Madding Crowd,
Midnight Cowboy (for which he won an Oscar as best director and which also won the best picture award), Sunday Bloody Sunday, The Day of the Locust, Marathon Man, Yanks and Madame Sousatzka. Midnight Cowboy was the only X-rated film ever to win the best picture Oscar.
