U.S. Senator, Medal of Honor Recipient. Daniel K. Inouye was Hawaii's longest serving U.S. senator and the senior member of the U.S. Senate at the time of his death. During World War II, he served with the famous 442nd Regimental Combat Team, with whom he earned two Purple Hearts, a Bronze Star and numerous other commendations. In 2000, Inouye was awarded the Medal of Honor by then-President Bill Clinton for his heroism in Italy during World War II, which cost him the use of his right arm. In 1954, he was elected to the legislature of the Territory of Hawaii, five years before the Hawaiian Islands became the fiftieth state admitted to the Union. On August 21, 1959, the day Hawaii became a state, Inouye was elected as Hawaii's first U.S. Congressman. In 1963, he was elected to the U.S. Senate, where he served until his death. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Hawaii, and his law degree from George Washington University. In 2013 he was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, becoming the first US Senator to receive both the Medal of Freedom and the Medal of Honor.
