This time, it was the Soviet Union's Dinamo Tbilisi (last season's USSR champions) who were unable to stop the devastating action of this sober and powerful team, whose ranks include prominent players from the Soviet national team. In the first leg in Tbilisi, ASK Riga won by a ten-point margin (51-61), allowing them to go into the return leg with some confidence. The Riga game was a real test of the three-time continental champions, who beat their rivals again (69-62) thanks to Krmins. The elegant hooks of this formidable 2.20m Latvian centre-back were joined by the mid-range effectiveness of the young Kalnis, a new value in Soviet basketball. The Mui?niks brothers (notably Valdis) and veteran Valdmanis complete the ASK Riga starting line-up.
