Origin and history of zoophilia


zoophilia(n.)

"attraction to animals involving release of sexual energy," 1899, in a translation of Krafft-Ebing (it is attested in German by 1894), fromzoo- "animal" +-philia.

"[F]ormerly not implying sexual intercourse or bestiality" [OED, 1989], and it was used earlier in 1890s in psychological writing in reference to a morbid sentimentalism over animals. Related:Zoophilic.

Zoophilist is attested by 1829 as "one who has sympathy or tender care for living creatures, opponent of vivisection and animal cruelty;"zoophile in this sense is by 1885, from French.Zoophily is attested by 1886.
