Origin and history of hypnosis


hypnosis(n.)

1850, "the coming on of sleep," coined (as an alternative tohypnotism) fromhypno- "sleep" +-osis "condition." But the distinction was not sustained, and by 1876hypnosis was being used of artificially induced conditions.

1843, short forneuro-hypnotism (1842), coined by Dr. James Braid of Manchester, England, fromhypnotic +-ism. In the same work (1843) Braid coined the verbhypnotize.

"hypnotism," 1849, from the name of hypnosis pioneer Dr. JamesBraid (seehypnosis).
