2 ^cIntheseventhmonth,onthetwenty-firstdayofthemonth,thewordoftheLordcamebythehandofHaggaitheprophet:2 “Speaknowto^dZerubbabelthesonofShealtiel,governorofJudah,andto^dJoshuathesonofJehozadak,thehighpriest,andtoalltheremnantofthepeople,andsay,3 ^e‘Whoisleftamongyouwhosawthishouse^finitsformerglory?Howdoyouseeitnow?^gIsitnotasnothinginyoureyes?4 Yetnow^hbestrong,O^dZerubbabel,declarestheLord.^hBestrong,O^dJoshua,sonofJehozadak,thehighpriest.^hBestrong,allyoupeopleoftheland,declarestheLord.ⁱWork,for^jIamwithyou,declarestheLordofhosts,5 ^kaccordingtothecovenantthatImadewithyouwhenyoucameoutofEgypt.^lMySpiritremainsinyourmidst.^mFearnot.6 ForthussaystheLordofhosts:ⁿYetoncemore,inalittlewhile,^oIwillshaketheheavensandtheearthandtheseaandthedryland.7 AndIwillshakeallnations,sothatthetreasuresofallnationsshallcomein,and^pIwillfillthishousewithglory,saystheLordofhosts.8 ^qThesilverismine,andthegoldismine,declarestheLordofhosts.9 ^rThelattergloryofthishouseshallbegreaterthantheformer,saystheLordofhosts.And^sinthisplaceIwillgivepeace,declarestheLordofhosts.’”

Blessings for a Defiled People

10 ^tOnthetwenty-fourthdayoftheninthmonth,^uinthesecondyearofDarius,thewordoftheLordcamebyHaggaitheprophet,11 “ThussaystheLordofhosts:^vAskthepriestsaboutthelaw:12 ‘Ifsomeonecarries^wholymeatinthefoldofhisgarmentandtoucheswithhisfoldbreadorsteworwineoroiloranykindoffood,doesitbecomeholy?’”Thepriestsansweredandsaid,^x“No.”13 ThenHaggaisaid,^y“Ifsomeonewhoisuncleanbycontactwithadeadbody^ztouchesanyofthese,doesitbecomeunclean?”Thepriestsansweredandsaid,“Itdoesbecomeunclean.”14 ThenHaggaiansweredandsaid,^a“Soisitwiththispeople,andwiththisnationbeforeme,declarestheLord,andsowitheveryworkoftheirhands.Andwhattheyofferthereisunclean.15 Nowthen,^bconsiderfromthisdayonward.¹BeforestonewasplaceduponstoneinthetempleoftheLord,16 howdidyoufare?^cWhen²onecametoaheapoftwentymeasures,therewerebutten.Whenonecametothewinevattodrawfiftymeasures,therewerebuttwenty.17 ^dIstruckyouandalltheproductsofyourtoilwithblightandwithmildewandwithhail,^eyetyoudidnotturntome,declarestheLord.18 ^bConsiderfromthisdayonward,^ffromthetwenty-fourthdayoftheninthmonth.Since^gthedaythatthefoundationoftheLord’stemplewaslaid,^bconsider:19 ^hIstheseedyetinthebarn?Indeed,thevine,thefigtree,thepomegranate,andtheolivetreehaveyieldednothing.ButfromthisdayonⁱIwillblessyou.”

20 ThewordoftheLordcameasecondtimetoHaggai^fonthetwenty-fourthdayofthemonth,21 “Speakto^jZerubbabel,governorofJudah,saying,^kIamabouttoshaketheheavensandtheearth,22 and^ltooverthrowthethroneofkingdoms.Iamabouttodestroythestrengthofthekingdomsofthenations,and^moverthrowthechariotsandtheirriders.Andthehorsesandtheirridersshallgodown,ⁿeveryonebytheswordofhisbrother.23 Onthatday,declarestheLordofhosts,Iwilltakeyou,O^jZerubbabel^omyservant,thesonof^pShealtiel,declarestheLord,andmakeyou^qlikea³signetring,^oforIhavechosenyou,declarestheLordofhosts.”

A Call to Return to theLord

1 Intheeighthmonth,^ainthesecondyearofDarius,thewordoftheLordcametotheprophet^bZechariah,thesonof^cBerechiah,sonof^dIddo,saying,2 ^e“TheLordwasveryangrywithyourfathers.3 Thereforesaytothem,ThusdeclarestheLordofhosts:^fReturntome,saystheLordofhosts,and^gIwillreturntoyou,saystheLordofhosts.4 ^hDonotbelikeyourfathers,ⁱtowhomtheformerprophetscriedout,‘ThussaystheLordofhosts,^fReturnfromyourevilwaysandfromyourevildeeds.’But^jtheydidnothearorpayattentiontome,declarestheLord.5 Yourfathers,wherearethey?And^ktheprophets,dotheyliveforever?6 ^lButmywordsandmystatutes,whichIcommanded^mmyservantstheprophets,didtheynotⁿovertakeyourfathers?Sotheyrepentedandsaid,^o‘AstheLordofhostspurposedtodealwithusfor^pourwaysand^pdeeds,sohashedealtwithus.’”

7 Onthetwenty-fourthdayoftheeleventhmonth,whichisthemonthofShebat,inthesecondyearofDarius,thewordoftheLordcametotheprophet^bZechariah,thesonof^cBerechiah,sonof^dIddo,saying,8 “Isawinthenight,andbehold,^qamanridingonaredhorse!Hewasstandingamongthemyrtletreesintheglen,andbehindhimwere^rred,sorrel,andwhitehorses.9 ThenIsaid,‘Whatarethese,mylord?’^sTheangelwhotalkedwithmesaidtome,‘Iwillshowyouwhattheyare.’10 So^qthemanwhowasstandingamongthemyrtletreesanswered,^t‘ThesearetheywhomtheLordhassentto^upatroltheearth.’11 Andtheyanswered^stheangeloftheLordwhowasstandingamongthemyrtletrees,andsaid,^u‘Wehavepatrolledtheearth,andbehold,alltheearth^vremainsatrest.’12 Then^stheangeloftheLordsaid,^w‘OLordofhosts,^whowlongwillyou^xhavenomercyonJerusalemandthecitiesofJudah,againstwhichyouhavebeenangrythese^yseventyyears?’13 AndtheLordanswered^zgraciousandcomfortingwordsto^stheangelwhotalkedwithme.14 So^stheangelwhotalkedwithmesaidtome,‘Cryout,ThussaystheLordofhosts:^aIamexceedinglyjealousforJerusalemandforZion.15 ^bAndIamexceedinglyangrywiththenationsthatare^catease;^dforwhileIwasangrybutalittle,^etheyfurtheredthedisaster.16 Therefore,thussaystheLord,^fIhavereturnedtoJerusalemwithmercy;^gmyhouseshallbebuiltinit,declarestheLordofhosts,and^hthemeasuringlineshallbestretchedoutoverJerusalem.17 Cryoutagain,ThussaystheLordofhosts:ⁱMycitiesshallagainoverflowwithprosperity,^jandtheLordwillagaincomfortZionandagain^kchooseJerusalem.’”

18 ¹AndIliftedmyeyesandsaw,andbehold,^lfourhorns!19 AndIsaidto^stheangelwhotalkedwithme,“Whatarethese?”Andhesaidtome,^l“ThesearethehornsthathavescatteredJudah,Israel,andJerusalem.”20 ThentheLordshowedmefourcraftsmen.21 AndIsaid,“Whatarethesecomingtodo?”Hesaid,^l“ThesearethehornsthatscatteredJudah,sothatnooneraisedhishead.Andthesehavecome^mtoterrifythem,tocastdownthehornsofthenationsⁿwholifteduptheirhornsagainstthelandofJudahtoscatterit.”

2 ¹AndIliftedmyeyesandsaw,andbehold,^oamanwithameasuringlineinhishand!2 ThenIsaid,“Whereareyougoing?”Andhesaidtome,^p“TomeasureJerusalem,toseewhatisitswidthandwhatisitslength.”3 Andbehold,^qtheangelwhotalkedwithmecameforward,andanotherangelcameforwardtomeethim4 andsaidtohim,“Run,saytothatyoungman,^r‘Jerusalemshallbeinhabited^sasvillageswithoutwalls,becauseof^tthemultitudeofpeopleandlivestockinit.5 AndIwillbetoher^uawalloffireallaround,declarestheLord,andIwillbethegloryinhermidst.’”

6 Up!Up!^vFleefromthelandofthenorth,declarestheLord.ForIhave^wspreadyouabroadasthefourwindsoftheheavens,declarestheLord.7 ^xUp!EscapetoZion,youwhodwellwiththedaughterofBabylon.8 ForthussaidtheLordofhosts,afterhisglorysentme²tothenationswhoplunderedyou,^yforhewhotouchesyoutouches^ztheappleofhiseye:9 “Behold,^aIwillshakemyhandoverthem,^bandtheyshallbecomeplunderforthosewhoservedthem.Then^cyouwillknowthattheLordofhostshassentme.10 ^dSingandrejoice,OdaughterofZion,for^ebehold,Icome^fandIwilldwellinyourmidst,declarestheLord.11 ^gAndmanynationsshalljointhemselvestotheLordinthatday,andshallbemypeople.^fAndIwilldwellinyourmidst,and^cyoushallknowthattheLordofhostshassentmetoyou.12 ^hAndtheLordwillinheritJudahashisportionintheholyland,andwillagainⁱchooseJerusalem.”

13 Besilent,allflesh,beforetheLord,forhehasrousedhimselffromhisholydwelling.

A Vision of Joshua the High Priest

3 Thenheshowedme^jJoshuathehighprieststandingbeforetheangeloftheLord,and^kSatan¹standingathisrighthandtoaccusehim.2 AndtheLordsaidtoSatan,^l“TheLordrebukeyou,OSatan!TheLordwhohas^mchosenJerusalemrebukeyou!Isnotthisⁿabrand²pluckedfromthefire?”3 Now^jJoshuawasstandingbeforetheangel,^oclothedwithfilthygarments.4 Andtheangelsaidto^pthosewhowerestandingbeforehim,^q“Removethefilthygarmentsfromhim.”Andtohimhesaid,“Behold,^rIhavetakenyouriniquityawayfromyou,and^sIwillclotheyouwithpurevestments.”5 AndIsaid,^t“Letthemputacleanturbanonhishead.”Sotheyputacleanturbanonhisheadandclothedhimwithgarments.AndtheangeloftheLordwasstandingby.

6 AndtheangeloftheLordsolemnlyassured^jJoshua,7 “ThussaystheLordofhosts:Ifyouwillwalkinmywaysand^ukeepmycharge,thenyoushall^vrulemyhouseandhavechargeofmycourts,andIwillgiveyoutherightofaccessamong^wthosewhoarestandinghere.8 Hearnow,OJoshuathehighpriest,youandyourfriendswhositbeforeyou,for^xtheyaremenwhoareasign:behold,Iwillbring^ymyservant^ztheBranch.9 Forbehold,on^athestonethatIhavesetbeforeJoshua,onasinglestonewith^bseveneyes,³Iwill^cengraveitsinscription,declarestheLordofhosts,and^dIwillremovetheiniquityofthislandinasingleday.10 Inthatday,declarestheLordofhosts,everyoneofyouwillinvitehisneighbortocome^eunderhisvineandunderhisfigtree.”

A Vision of a Golden Lampstand

4 And^ftheangelwhotalkedwithmecameagain^gandwokeme,likeamanwhoisawakenedoutofhissleep.2 Andhesaidtome,“Whatdoyousee?”Isaid,“Isee,andbehold,^halampstandallofgold,withabowlonthetopofit,andⁱsevenlampsonit,withsevenlipsoneachofthelampsthatareonthetopofit.3 Andthereare^jtwoolivetreesbyit,oneontherightofthebowlandtheotheronitsleft.”4 AndIsaidto^ftheangelwhotalkedwithme,“Whatarethese,mylord?”5 Thentheangelwhotalkedwithmeansweredandsaidtome,^k“Doyounotknowwhattheseare?”Isaid,“No,mylord.”6 Thenhesaidtome,“ThisisthewordoftheLordto^lZerubbabel:^mNotbymight,norbypower,butbymySpirit,saystheLordofhosts.7 Whoareyou,ⁿOgreatmountain?Before^lZerubbabel^oyoushallbecomeaplain.Andheshallbringforward^pthetopstoneamidshoutsof‘Grace,gracetoit!’”

8 ThenthewordoftheLordcametome,saying,9 ^q“Thehandsof^lZerubbabelhavelaidthefoundationofthishouse;hishandsshallalso^rcompleteit.^sThenyouwillknowthattheLordofhostshassentmetoyou.10 ^tForwhoeverhasdespisedthedayofsmallthingsshallrejoice,andshallsee^utheplumblineinthehandofZerubbabel.

^v“Theseseven^varetheeyesoftheLord,^wwhichrangethroughthewholeearth.”11 ThenIsaidtohim,“Whatarethese^jtwoolivetreesontherightandtheleftofthelampstand?”12 AndasecondtimeIansweredandsaidtohim,“Whatarethese^jtwobranchesoftheolivetrees,whicharebesidethetwogoldenpipesfromwhichthegoldenoil¹ispouredout?”13 Hesaidtome,^x“Doyounotknowwhattheseare?”Isaid,“No,mylord.”14 Thenhesaid,^y“Thesearethetwoanointedones²whostandby^ztheLordofthewholeearth.”
