The People Complain

11 And^tthepeoplecomplainedinthehearingoftheLordabouttheirmisfortunes,andwhentheLordheardit,^uhisangerwaskindled,and^vthefireoftheLordburnedamongthemandconsumedsomeoutlyingpartsofthecamp.2 Then^wthepeoplecriedouttoMoses,^xandMosesprayedtotheLord,andthefiredieddown.3 Sothenameofthatplacewascalled^yTaberah,¹becausethefireoftheLordburnedamongthem.

4 Nowthe^zrabblethatwasamongthemhadastrongcraving.AndthepeopleofIsraelalso^aweptagainandsaid,^b“Ohthatwehadmeattoeat!5 ^cWerememberthefishweateinEgyptthatcostnothing,thecucumbers,themelons,theleeks,theonions,andthegarlic.6 Butnowourstrengthisdriedup,andthereisnothingatallbutthismannatolookat.”

7 Now^dthemannawaslikecorianderseed,anditsappearancelikethatofbdellium.8 ^eThepeoplewentaboutandgathereditandgrounditinhandmillsorbeatitinmortarsandboileditinpotsandmadecakesofit.^fAndthetasteofitwaslikethetasteofcakesbakedwithoil.9 ^gWhenthedewfelluponthecampinthenight,themannafellwithit.

10 Mosesheardthepeople^hweepingthroughouttheirclans,everyoneatthedoorofhistent.AndtheangeroftheLordblazedhotly,andMoseswasdispleased.11 ⁱMosessaidtotheLord,“Whyhaveyoudealtillwithyourservant?AndwhyhaveInotfoundfavorinyoursight,thatyoulaytheburdenofallthispeopleonme?12 DidIconceiveallthispeople?DidIgivethembirth,thatyoushouldsaytome,^j‘Carrytheminyourbosom,asa^knursecarriesanursingchild,’totheland^lthatyousworetogivetheirfathers?13 ^mWhereamItogetmeattogivetoallthispeople?Fortheyweepbeforemeandsay,‘Giveusmeat,thatwemayeat.’14 ⁿIamnotabletocarryallthispeoplealone;theburdenistooheavyforme.15 Ifyouwilltreatmelikethis,killmeatonce,ifIfindfavorinyoursight,thatImaynotseemywretchedness.”

Elders Appointed to Aid Moses

16 ThentheLordsaidtoMoses,“Gatherforme^oseventymenoftheeldersofIsrael,whomyouknowtobetheeldersofthepeopleand^pofficersoverthem,andbringthemtothetentofmeeting,andletthemtaketheirstandtherewithyou.17 ^qAndIwillcomedownandtalkwithyouthere.And^rIwilltakesomeoftheSpiritthatisonyouandputitonthem,and^stheyshallbeartheburdenofthepeoplewithyou,sothatyoumaynotbearityourselfalone.18 Andsaytothepeople,^t‘Consecrateyourselvesfortomorrow,andyoushalleatmeat,foryouhaveweptinthehearingoftheLord,saying,“Whowillgiveusmeattoeat?^uForitwasbetterforusinEgypt.”ThereforetheLordwillgiveyoumeat,andyoushalleat.19 Youshallnoteatjustoneday,ortwodays,orfivedays,ortendays,ortwentydays,20 butawholemonth,^vuntilitcomesoutatyournostrilsandbecomesloathsometoyou,becauseyouhaverejectedtheLordwhoisamongyouandhaveweptbeforehim,saying,^w“WhydidwecomeoutofEgypt?”’”21 ButMosessaid,^x“ThepeopleamongwhomIamnumbersixhundredthousandonfoot,andyouhavesaid,‘Iwillgivethemmeat,thattheymayeatawholemonth!’22 ^yShallflocksandherdsbeslaughteredforthem,andbeenoughforthem?Orshallallthefishoftheseabegatheredtogetherforthem,andbeenoughforthem?”23 AndtheLordsaidtoMoses,^z“IstheLord’shandshortened?Nowyoushallseewhether^amywordwillcometrueforyouornot.”

24 SoMoseswentoutandtoldthepeoplethewordsoftheLord.^bAndhegatheredseventymenoftheeldersofthepeopleandplacedthemaroundthetent.25 Then^ctheLordcamedowninthecloudandspoketohim,andtooksomeoftheSpiritthatwasonhimandputitontheseventyelders.AndassoonastheSpiritrestedonthem,theyprophesied.Buttheydidnotcontinuedoingit.

26 Nowtwomenremainedinthecamp,onenamedEldad,andtheothernamedMedad,andtheSpiritrestedonthem.Theywereamongthoseregistered,butthey^dhadnotgoneouttothetent,andsotheyprophesiedinthecamp.27 AndayoungmanranandtoldMoses,“EldadandMedadareprophesyinginthecamp.”28 And^eJoshuathesonofNun,theassistantofMosesfromhisyouth,said,“MylordMoses,^fstopthem.”29 ButMosessaidtohim,“Areyoujealousformysake?^gWouldthatalltheLord’speoplewereprophets,thattheLordwouldputhisSpiritonthem!”30 AndMosesandtheeldersofIsraelreturnedtothecamp.

Quail and a Plague

31 Thena^hwindfromtheLordsprangup,anditbroughtquailfromtheseaandletthemfallbesidethecamp,aboutaday’sjourneyonthissideandaday’sjourneyontheotherside,aroundthecamp,andabouttwocubits²abovetheground.32 Andthepeopleroseallthatdayandallnightandallthenextday,andgatheredthequail.Thosewhogatheredleastgatheredtenⁱhomers.³Andtheyspreadthemoutforthemselvesallaroundthecamp.33 ^jWhilethemeatwasyetbetweentheirteeth,beforeitwasconsumed,theangeroftheLordwaskindledagainstthepeople,and^ktheLordstruckdownthepeoplewithaverygreatplague.34 Thereforethenameofthatplacewascalled^lKibroth-hattaavah,⁴becausetheretheyburiedthepeoplewhohadthecraving.35 ^mFromKibroth-hattaavahthepeoplejourneyedtoⁿHazeroth,andtheyremainedatⁿHazeroth.

Miriam and Aaron Oppose Moses

12 MiriamandAaronspokeagainstMosesbecauseoftheCushitewomanwhomhehadmarried,forhehadmarriedaCushitewoman.2 Andtheysaid,“HastheLordindeedspokenonlythroughMoses?^oHashenotspokenthroughusalso?”And^ptheLordheardit.3 NowthemanMoseswasverymeek,morethanallpeoplewhowereonthefaceoftheearth.4 AndsuddenlytheLordsaidtoMosesandtoAaronandMiriam,“Comeout,youthree,tothetentofmeeting.”Andthethreeofthemcameout.5 And^qtheLordcamedowninapillarofcloudandstoodattheentranceofthetentandcalledAaronandMiriam,andtheybothcameforward.6 Andhesaid,“Hearmywords:Ifthereisaprophetamongyou,ItheLordmakemyselfknowntohim^rinavision;Ispeakwithhim^sinadream.7 Notsowith^tmyservantMoses.^uHeisfaithfulinallmyhouse.8 WithhimIspeak^vmouthtomouth,clearly,andnotin^wriddles,andhebeholds^xtheformoftheLord.WhythenwereyounotafraidtospeakagainstmyservantMoses?”9 AndtheangeroftheLordwaskindledagainstthem,andhedeparted.

10 Whenthecloudremovedfromoverthetent,behold,^yMiriamwas^zleprous,¹likesnow.AndAaronturnedtowardMiriam,andbehold,shewasleprous.11 AndAaronsaidtoMoses,“Oh,mylord,^adonotpunishus²becausewehavedonefoolishlyandhavesinned.12 Lethernotbeasonedead,whosefleshishalfeatenawaywhenhecomesoutofhismother’swomb.”13 AndMosescriedtotheLord,“OGod,pleasehealher—please.”14 ButtheLordsaidtoMoses,“Ifherfatherhadbut^bspitinherface,shouldshenotbeshamedsevendays?Letherbe^cshutoutsidethecampsevendays,andafterthatshemaybebroughtinagain.”15 SoMiriam^dwasshutoutsidethecampsevendays,andthepeopledidnotsetoutonthemarchtillMiriamwasbroughtinagain.16 Afterthatthepeoplesetoutfrom^eHazeroth,andcampedin^fthewildernessofParan.

Spies Sent into Canaan

13 TheLordspoketoMoses,saying,2 ^g“SendmentospyoutthelandofCanaan,whichIamgivingtothepeopleofIsrael.Fromeachtribeoftheirfathersyoushallsendaman,everyoneachiefamongthem.”3 SoMosessentthemfrom^hthewildernessofParan,accordingtothecommandoftheLord,allofthemmenwhowereheadsofthepeopleofIsrael.4 Andtheseweretheirnames:FromthetribeofReuben,ShammuathesonofZaccur;5 fromthetribeofSimeon,ShaphatthesonofHori;6 ⁱfromthetribeofJudah,^jCalebthesonofJephunneh;7 fromthetribeofIssachar,IgalthesonofJoseph;8 fromthetribeofEphraim,^kHosheathesonofNun;9 fromthetribeofBenjamin,PaltithesonofRaphu;10 fromthetribeofZebulun,GaddielthesonofSodi;11 fromthetribeofJoseph(thatis,fromthetribeofManasseh),GaddithesonofSusi;12 fromthetribeofDan,AmmielthesonofGemalli;13 fromthetribeofAsher,SethurthesonofMichael;14 fromthetribeofNaphtali,NahbithesonofVophsi;15 fromthetribeofGad,GeuelthesonofMachi.16 ThesewerethenamesofthemenwhomMosessenttospyouttheland.AndMosescalled^kHosheathesonofNun,Joshua.

17 MosessentthemtospyoutthelandofCanaanandsaidtothem,“Goupinto^ltheNegebandgoupinto^mthehillcountry,18 andseewhatthelandis,andwhetherthepeoplewhodwellinitarestrongorweak,whethertheyarefewormany,19 andwhetherthelandthattheydwellinisgoodorbad,andwhetherthecitiesthattheydwellinarecampsorstrongholds,20 andwhetherthelandisⁿrichorpoor,andwhethertherearetreesinitornot.^oBeofgoodcourageandbringsomeofthefruitoftheland.”Nowthetimewastheseasonofthefirstripegrapes.

21 Sotheywentupandspiedouttheland^pfromthewildernessofZintoRehob,^qnearLebo-hamath.22 Theywentupinto^mtheNegebandcameto^rHebron.^sAhiman,Sheshai,andTalmai,the^tdescendantsofAnak,werethere.(^uHebronwasbuiltsevenyearsbefore^uZoaninEgypt.)23 And^vtheycametotheValleyofEshcolandcutdownfromthereabranchwithasingleclusterofgrapes,andtheycarrieditonapolebetweentwoofthem;theyalsobroughtsomepomegranatesandfigs.24 ThatplacewascalledtheValleyofEshcol,¹becauseoftheclusterthatthepeopleofIsraelcutdownfromthere.

Report of the Spies

25 Attheendoffortydaystheyreturnedfromspyingouttheland.26 AndtheycametoMosesandAaronandtoallthecongregationofthepeopleofIsraelinthewildernessofParan,at^wKadesh.Theybroughtbackwordtothemandtoallthecongregation,andshowedthemthefruitoftheland.27 Andtheytoldhim,“Wecametothelandtowhichyousentus.It^xflowswithmilkandhoney,^yandthisisitsfruit.28 ^zHowever,thepeoplewhodwellinthelandarestrong,andthecitiesarefortifiedandverylarge.Andbesides,wesawthedescendantsofAnakthere.29 ^aTheAmalekitesdwellinthelandoftheNegeb.TheHittites,theJebusites,andtheAmoritesdwellinthehillcountry.^bAndtheCanaanitesdwellbythesea,andalongtheJordan.”

30 But^cCalebquietedthepeoplebeforeMosesandsaid,“Letusgoupatonceandoccupyit,forwearewellabletoovercomeit.”31 ^dThenthemenwhohadgoneupwithhimsaid,“Wearenotabletogoupagainstthepeople,fortheyarestrongerthanweare.”32 So^etheybroughttothepeopleofIsraelabadreportofthelandthattheyhadspiedout,saying,“Theland,throughwhichwehavegonetospyitout,isalandthatdevoursitsinhabitants,and^fallthepeoplethatwesawinitareofgreatheight.33 Andtherewesawthe^gNephilim(thesonsofAnak,whocomefromthe^gNephilim),andweseemedtoourselves^hlikegrasshoppers,andsoweseemedtothem.”

The People Rebel

14 Thenallthecongregationraisedaloudcry,andthepeopleⁱweptthatnight.2 AndallthepeopleofIsrael^jgrumbledagainstMosesandAaron.Thewholecongregationsaidtothem,“WouldthatwehaddiedinthelandofEgypt!Or^kwouldthatwehaddiedinthiswilderness!3 WhyistheLordbringingusintothisland,tofallbythesword?^lOurwivesandourlittleoneswillbecomeaprey.WoulditnotbebetterforustogobacktoEgypt?”4 Andtheysaidtooneanother,^m“LetuschoosealeaderandⁿgobacktoEgypt.”

5 Then^oMosesandAaronfellontheirfacesbeforealltheassemblyofthecongregationofthepeopleofIsrael.6 ^pAndJoshuathesonofNunandCalebthesonofJephunneh,whowereamongthosewhohadspiedouttheland,toretheirclothes7 andsaidtoallthecongregationofthepeopleofIsrael,^q“Theland,whichwepassedthroughtospyitout,isanexceedinglygoodland.8 If^rtheLorddelightsinus,hewillbringusintothislandandgiveittous,^salandthatflowswithmilkandhoney.9 Only^tdonotrebelagainsttheLord.And^udonotfearthepeopleoftheland,for^vtheyarebreadforus.Theirprotectionisremovedfromthem,andtheLordiswithus;donotfearthem.”10 ^wThenallthecongregationsaidtostonethemwithstones.But^xthegloryoftheLordappearedatthetentofmeetingtoallthepeopleofIsrael.

11 AndtheLordsaidtoMoses,“Howlongwillthispeople^ydespiseme?Andhowlongwilltheynot^zbelieveinme,inspiteofallthesignsthatIhavedoneamongthem?12 Iwillstrikethemwiththepestilenceanddisinheritthem,andI^awillmakeofyouanationgreaterandmightierthanthey.”

Moses Intercedes for the People

13 But^bMosessaidtotheLord,“ThentheEgyptianswillhearofit,foryoubroughtupthispeopleinyourmightfromamongthem,14 andtheywilltelltheinhabitantsofthisland.^cTheyhaveheardthatyou,OLord,areinthemidstofthispeople.Foryou,OLord,areseenfacetoface,and^dyourcloudstandsoverthemandyougobeforethem,inapillarofcloudbydayandinapillaroffirebynight.15 Nowifyoukillthispeopleasoneman,thenthenationswhohaveheardyourfamewillsay,16 ‘ItisbecausetheLord^ewasnotabletobringthispeopleintothelandthathesworetogivetothemthathehaskilledtheminthewilderness.’17 Andnow,pleaseletthepoweroftheLordbegreatasyouhavepromised,saying,18 ^f‘TheLordisslowtoangerandaboundinginsteadfastlove,forgivinginiquityandtransgression,buthewillbynomeanscleartheguilty,^gvisitingtheiniquityofthefathersonthechildren,tothethirdandthefourthgeneration.’19 Please^hpardontheiniquityofthispeople,accordingtothegreatnessofyoursteadfastlove,justⁱasyouhaveforgiventhispeople,fromEgyptuntilnow.”

God Promises Judgment

20 ThentheLordsaid,“Ihavepardoned,^jaccordingtoyourword.21 Buttruly,asIlive,andasall^ktheearthshallbefilledwiththegloryoftheLord,22 ^lnoneofthemenwhohaveseenmygloryandmysignsthatIdidinEgyptandinthewilderness,andyethaveputmetothetestthese^mtentimesandhavenotobeyedmyvoice,23 ⁿshallseethelandthatIsworetogivetotheirfathers.Andnoneofthosewhodespisedmeshallseeit.24 Butmyservant^oCaleb,becausehehasadifferentspiritandhas^pfollowedmefully,Iwillbringintothelandintowhichhewent,andhisdescendantsshallpossessit.25 ^qNow,sincetheAmalekitesandtheCanaanitesdwellinthevalleys,^rturntomorrowandsetoutforthewildernessbythewaytotheRedSea.”

26 AndtheLordspoketoMosesandtoAaron,saying,27 “Howlongshall^sthiswickedcongregationgrumbleagainstme?^tIhaveheardthegrumblingsofthepeopleofIsrael,whichtheygrumbleagainstme.28 Saytothem,^u‘AsIlive,declarestheLord,^vwhatyouhavesaidinmyhearingIwilldotoyou:29 ^wyourdeadbodiesshallfallinthiswilderness,and^xofallyournumber,listedinthecensus^yfromtwentyyearsoldandupward,whohavegrumbledagainstme,30 notoneshallcomeintothelandwhereI^zsworethatIwouldmakeyoudwell,^aexceptCalebthesonofJephunnehandJoshuathesonofNun.31 ^bButyourlittleones,whoyousaidwouldbecomeaprey,Iwillbringin,andtheyshallknowthelandthat^cyouhaverejected.32 Butasforyou,^wyourdeadbodiesshallfallinthiswilderness.33 Andyourchildren^dshallbeshepherdsinthewilderness^efortyyearsandshall^fsufferforyourfaithlessness,untilthelastofyourdeadbodiesliesinthewilderness.34 ^gAccordingtothenumberofthedaysinwhichyouspiedouttheland,^hfortydays,ayearforeachday,youshallbearyouriniquityfortyyears,andyoushallknowmydispleasure.’35 ⁱI,theLord,havespoken.SurelythiswillIdotoall^jthiswickedcongregationwhoaregatheredtogetheragainstme:inthiswildernesstheyshallcometoafullend,andtheretheyshalldie.”

36 ^kAndthemenwhomMosessenttospyouttheland,whoreturnedandmadeallthecongregationgrumbleagainsthimbybringingupabadreportabouttheland—37 themenwhobroughtupabadreportoftheland—^ldiedbyplaguebeforetheLord.38 Ofthosemenwhowenttospyouttheland,^monlyJoshuathesonofNunandCalebthesonofJephunnehremainedalive.

Israel Defeated in Battle

39 WhenMosestoldthesewordstoallthepeopleofIsrael,thepeopleⁿmournedgreatly.40 Andtheyroseearlyinthemorningandwentuptotheheightsofthehillcountry,saying,^o“Hereweare.WewillgouptotheplacethattheLordhaspromised,forwehavesinned.”41 ^pButMosessaid,“WhynowareyoutransgressingthecommandoftheLord,whenthatwillnotsucceed?42 ^qDonotgoup,^rfortheLordisnotamongyou,lestyoubestruckdownbeforeyourenemies.43 Forthere^stheAmalekitesandtheCanaanitesarefacingyou,andyoushallfallbythesword.BecauseyouhaveturnedbackfromfollowingtheLord,theLordwillnotbewithyou.”44 ^tButtheypresumedtogouptotheheightsofthehillcountry,althoughneither^uthearkofthecovenantoftheLordnorMosesdepartedoutofthecamp.45 Then^vtheAmalekitesandtheCanaaniteswholivedinthathillcountrycamedownanddefeatedthemandpursuedthem,evento^wHormah.

15 TheLordspoketoMoses,saying,2 “SpeaktothepeopleofIsraelandsaytothem,^xWhenyoucomeintothelandyouaretoinhabit,whichIamgivingyou,3 and^yyouoffertotheLordfromtheherdorfromtheflockafoodoffering¹oraburntofferingorasacrifice,^ztofulfillavoworasafreewillofferingor^aatyourappointedfeasts,tomakea^bpleasingaromatotheLord,4 then^chewhobringshisofferingshalloffertotheLord^dagrainofferingofatenthofanephah²offineflour,^emixedwithaquarterofahin³ofoil;5 andyoushallofferwiththeburntoffering,orforthesacrifice,aquarterofahinof^fwineforthedrinkofferingforeachlamb.6 ^gOrforaram,youshallofferforagrainofferingtwotenthsofanephahoffineflourmixedwithathirdofahinofoil.7 Andforthedrinkofferingyoushallofferathirdofahinofwine,a^bpleasingaromatotheLord.8 Andwhenyouofferabullasaburntofferingorsacrifice,to^zfulfillavoworfor^hpeaceofferingstotheLord,9 thenoneshallofferⁱwiththebullagrainofferingofthreetenthsofanephahoffineflour,mixedwithhalfahinofoil.10 Andyoushallofferforthedrinkofferinghalfahinofwine,asafoodoffering,apleasingaromatotheLord.
