4 Again^vhebegantoteachbesidethesea.Andaverylargecrowdgatheredabouthim,^wsothathegotintoaboatandsatinitonthesea,andthewholecrowdwasbesidetheseaontheland.2 And^xhewasteachingthemmanythingsinparables,andinhisteachinghesaidtothem:3 “Listen!^yBehold,asowerwentouttosow.4 Andashesowed,someseedfellalongthepath,andthebirdscameanddevouredit.5 Otherseedfellonrockyground,whereitdidnothavemuchsoil,andimmediatelyitsprangup,sinceithadnodepthofsoil.6 And^zwhenthesunrose,itwasscorched,andsinceithadnoroot,^aitwitheredaway.7 Otherseedfellamong^bthorns,andthethornsgrewupandchokedit,andityieldednograin.8 Andotherseedsfellintogoodsoilandproducedgrain,growingupandincreasingandyieldingthirtyfoldandsixtyfoldand^cahundredfold.”9 Andhesaid,^d“Hewhohasearstohear,lethimhear.”

The Purpose of the Parables

10 And^ewhenhewasalone,thosearoundhimwiththetwelveaskedhimabouttheparables.11 Andhesaidtothem,^f“Toyouhasbeengiven^gthesecretofthekingdomofGod,butfor^hthoseoutsideeverythingisinparables,12 ⁱsothat

13 ^lAndhesaidtothem,“Doyounotunderstandthisparable?Howthenwillyouunderstandalltheparables?14 ^mThesowersowsⁿtheword.15 Andthesearetheonesalongthepath,wherethewordissown:whentheyhear,Satanimmediatelycomesandtakesawaythewordthatissowninthem.16 Andthesearetheonessownonrockyground:theoneswho,whentheyheartheword,immediatelyreceiveit^owithjoy.17 Andtheyhavenorootinthemselves,but^pendureforawhile;then,whentribulationorpersecutionarisesonaccountoftheword,immediately^qtheyfallaway.¹18 Andothersaretheonessownamongthorns.Theyarethosewhoheartheword,19 but^rthecaresof^stheworldand^tthedeceitfulnessofrichesandthedesiresforotherthingsenterinandchoketheword,anditprovesunfruitful.20 Butthosethatweresownonthegoodsoilaretheoneswhohearthewordandacceptitand^ubearfruit,^vthirtyfoldandsixtyfoldandahundredfold.”

A Lamp Under a Basket

21 ^wAndhesaidtothem,^x“Isalampbroughtintobeputunderabasket,orunderabed,andnotonastand?22 ^yFornothingishiddenexcepttobemademanifest;norisanythingsecretexcepttocometolight.23 ^zIfanyonehasearstohear,lethimhear.”24 Andhesaidtothem,“Payattentiontowhatyouhear:^awiththemeasureyouuse,itwillbemeasuredtoyou,andstillmorewillbeaddedtoyou.25 ^bFortotheonewhohas,morewillbegiven,andfromtheonewhohasnot,evenwhathehaswillbetakenaway.”

The Parable of the Seed Growing

26 Andhesaid,^c“ThekingdomofGodisasifamanshouldscatterseedontheground.27 Hesleepsandrisesnightandday,andtheseedsproutsandgrows;^dheknowsnothow.28 Theearthproducesbyitself,firsttheblade,thentheear,thenthefullgrainintheear.29 Butwhenthegrainisripe,atonce^eheputsinthesickle,becausetheharvesthascome.”

The Parable of the Mustard Seed

30 ^fAndhesaid,“WithwhatcanwecomparethekingdomofGod,orwhatparableshallweuseforit?31 Itislike^gagrainofmustardseed,which,whensownontheground,isthesmallestofalltheseedsonearth,32 yetwhenitissownitgrowsupandbecomeslargerthanallthegardenplantsandputsoutlargebranches,sothatthebirdsoftheaircanmakenestsinitsshade.”

33 ^hWithmanysuchparableshespokeⁱthewordtothem,^jastheywereabletohearit.34 Hedidnotspeaktothem^kwithoutaparable,but^lprivatelytohisowndiscipleshe^mexplainedeverything.

Jesus Calms a Storm

35 ⁿOnthatday,wheneveninghadcome,hesaidtothem,“Letusgoacrosstotheotherside.”36 Andleavingthecrowd,theytookhimwiththemintheboat,justashewas.Andotherboatswerewithhim.37 Andagreatwindstormarose,andthewaves^owerebreakingintotheboat,sothattheboatwasalreadyfilling.38 Buthewasinthestern,asleeponthecushion.Andtheywokehimandsaidtohim,“Teacher,doyounotcarethatweareperishing?”39 Andheawokeand^prebukedthewindandsaidtothesea,“Peace!Bestill!”Andthewindceased,and^qtherewasagreatcalm.40 Hesaidtothem,“Whyareyou^rsoafraid?Haveyoustillnofaith?”41 Andtheywerefilledwithgreatfearandsaidtooneanother,^s“Whothenisthis,thateven^tthewindandtheseaobeyhim?”

Jesus Heals a Man with a Demon

5 ^uTheycametotheothersideofthesea,tothecountryoftheGerasenes.¹2 AndwhenJesus²hadsteppedoutoftheboat,immediatelytheremethimoutofthetombsamanwithanuncleanspirit.3 ^vHelivedamongthetombs.Andnoonecouldbindhimanymore,notevenwithachain,4 forhehadoftenbeenboundwithshacklesandchains,buthewrenchedthechainsapart,andhebroketheshacklesinpieces.Noonehadthestrengthtosubduehim.5 Nightanddayamongthetombsandonthemountainshewasalwayscryingoutandcuttinghimselfwithstones.6 AndwhenhesawJesusfromafar,heranand^wfelldownbeforehim.7 And^xcryingoutwithaloudvoice,hesaid,“Whathaveyoutodowithme,Jesus,^ySonof^ztheMostHighGod?^aIadjureyoubyGod,donottormentme.”8 Forhewassayingtohim,“Comeoutoftheman,youuncleanspirit!”9 AndJesusaskedhim,“Whatisyourname?”Hereplied,“Mynameis^bLegion,forwearemany.”10 Andhebeggedhimearnestlynottosendthemoutofthecountry.11 Nowagreatherdofpigswasfeedingthereonthehillside,12 andtheybeggedhim,saying,“Sendustothepigs;letusenterthem.”13 Sohegavethempermission.Andtheuncleanspiritscameoutandenteredthepigs;andtheherd,numberingabouttwothousand,rusheddownthesteepbankintotheseaanddrownedinthesea.

14 Theherdsmenfledandtolditinthecityandinthecountry.Andpeoplecametoseewhatitwasthathadhappened.15 AndtheycametoJesusandsawthedemon-possessed³man,theonewhohadhad^cthelegion,sittingthere,^dclothedandinhisrightmind,andtheywereafraid.16 Andthosewhohadseenitdescribedtothemwhathadhappenedtothedemon-possessedmanandtothepigs.17 And^etheybegantobegJesus⁴todepartfromtheirregion.18 Ashewasgettingintotheboat,themanwhohadbeenpossessedwithdemonsbeggedhimthathemightbewithhim.19 Andhedidnotpermithimbutsaidtohim,“Gohometoyourfriendsand^ftellthemhowmuchtheLordhasdoneforyou,andhowhehashadmercyonyou.”20 Andhewentawayandbegantoproclaimin^gtheDecapolishowmuchJesushaddoneforhim,andeveryonemarveled.

Jesus Heals a Woman and Jairus’s Daughter

21 AndwhenJesushadcrossedagainintheboattotheotherside,agreatcrowdgatheredabouthim,andhewasbesidethesea.22 ^hThencameoneofⁱtherulersofthesynagogue,Jairusbyname,andseeinghim,hefellathisfeet23 andimploredhimearnestly,saying,“Mylittledaughterisatthepointofdeath.Comeand^jlayyourhandsonher,sothatshemaybemadewellandlive.”24 Andhewentwithhim.

Andagreatcrowdfollowedhimand^kthrongedabouthim.25 Andtherewasawoman^lwhohadhadadischargeofbloodfortwelveyears,26 andwhohadsufferedmuchundermanyphysicians,andhadspentallthatshehad,andwasnobetterbutrathergrewworse.27 ShehadheardthereportsaboutJesusandcameupbehindhiminthecrowdandtouchedhisgarment.28 Forshesaid,“IfItouchevenhisgarments,Iwillbemadewell.”29 ^mAndimmediatelytheflowofblooddriedup,andshefeltinherbodythatshewashealedofherⁿdisease.30 AndJesus,perceivinginhimselfthat^opowerhadgoneoutfromhim,immediatelyturnedaboutinthecrowdandsaid,“Whotouchedmygarments?”31 Andhisdisciplessaidtohim,“Youseethecrowdpressingaroundyou,andyetyousay,‘Whotouchedme?’”32 Andhelookedaroundtoseewhohaddoneit.33 Butthewoman,knowingwhathadhappenedtoher,cameinfearandtremblingandfelldownbeforehimandtoldhimthewholetruth.34 Andhesaidtoher,“Daughter,^pyourfaithhasmadeyouwell;^pgoinpeace,andbehealedofyourⁿdisease.”

35 Whilehewasstillspeaking,therecamefrom^qtheruler’shousesomewhosaid,“Yourdaughterisdead.Why^rtrouble^stheTeacheranyfurther?”36 Butoverhearing⁵whattheysaid,Jesussaidto^qtherulerofthesynagogue,“Donotfear,onlybelieve.”37 Andheallowednoonetofollowhimexcept^tPeterandJamesand^uJohnthebrotherofJames.38 Theycametothehouseoftherulerofthesynagogue,andJesus⁶sawacommotion,peopleweepingandwailingloudly.39 Andwhenhehadentered,hesaidtothem,^v“Whyareyoumakingacommotionandweeping?Thechildisnotdeadbut^wsleeping.”40 Andtheylaughedathim.Buthe^xputthemalloutsideandtookthechild’sfatherandmotherandthosewhowerewithhimandwentinwherethechildwas.41 ^yTakingherbythehandhesaidtoher,“Talithacumi,”whichmeans,“Littlegirl,Isaytoyou,^zarise.”42 Andimmediatelythegirlgotupandbeganwalking(forshewastwelveyearsofage),andtheywereimmediatelyovercomewithamazement.43 And^ahestrictlychargedthemthatnooneshouldknowthis,andtoldthemtogivehersomethingtoeat.

Jesus Rejected at Nazareth

6 ^bHewentawayfromthereandcameto^chishometown,andhisdisciplesfollowedhim.2 And^dontheSabbathhebegantoteachinthesynagogue,and^emanywhoheardhimwereastonished,saying,“Wheredidthismangetthesethings?Whatisthewisdomgiventohim?Howaresuchmightyworksdonebyhishands?3 ^fIsnotthis^gthecarpenter,¹thesonofMaryand^hbrotherofJamesandJosesandJudasandSimon?Andarenothissistersherewithus?”Andⁱtheytookoffenseathim.4 AndJesussaidtothem,^j“Aprophetisnotwithouthonor,exceptinhishometownandamonghisrelativesandinhisownhousehold.”5 And^khecoulddonomightyworkthere,exceptthat^lhelaidhishandsonafewsickpeopleandhealedthem.6 And^mhemarveledbecauseoftheirunbelief.

Jesus Sends Out the Twelve Apostles

7 ^oAndhecalledthetwelveandbegantosendthemouttwobytwo,andgavethemauthorityovertheuncleanspirits.8 Hechargedthemtotakenothingfortheirjourneyexceptastaff—nobread,nobag,nomoneyintheirbelts—9 butto^pwearsandalsandnotputontwotunics.²10 Andhesaidtothem,“Wheneveryouenterahouse,staythereuntilyoudepartfromthere.11 Andifanyplacewillnotreceiveyouandtheywillnotlistentoyou,whenyouleave,^qshakeoffthedustthatisonyourfeet^rasatestimonyagainstthem.”12 ^sSotheywentoutand^tproclaimed^uthatpeopleshouldrepent.13 ^tAndtheycastoutmanydemonsand^vanointedwithoilmanywhoweresickandhealedthem.

The Death of John the Baptist

14 ^wKingHerodheardofit,forJesus’³namehadbecomeknown.Some⁴said,^x“JohntheBaptist⁵hasbeenraisedfromthedead.Thatiswhythesemiraculouspowersareatworkinhim.”15 ^xButotherssaid,“HeisElijah.”Andotherssaid,“Heis^yaprophet,likeoneoftheprophetsofold.”16 ButwhenHerodheardofit,hesaid,“John,whomIbeheaded,hasbeenraised.”17 ^zForitwasHerodwhohadsentandseizedJohnand^aboundhiminprisonforthesakeofHerodias,hisbrotherPhilip’swife,becausehehadmarriedher.18 ^zForJohnhadbeensayingtoHerod,^b“Itisnotlawfulforyoutohaveyourbrother’swife.”19 AndHerodiashadagrudgeagainsthimandwantedtoputhimtodeath.Butshecouldnot,20 forHerod^cfearedJohn,knowingthathewasarighteousandholyman,andhekepthimsafe.Whenheheardhim,hewasgreatlyperplexed,andyethe^dheardhimgladly.

21 ButanopportunitycamewhenHerod^eonhisbirthday^fgaveabanquetforhisnoblesandmilitarycommandersandtheleadingmenofGalilee.22 ForwhenHerodias’sdaughtercameinanddanced,shepleasedHerodandhisguests.Andthekingsaidtothegirl,“Askmeforwhateveryouwish,andIwillgiveittoyou.”23 Andhevowedtoher,“Whateveryouaskme,Iwillgiveyou,^guptohalfofmykingdom.”24 Andshewentoutandsaidtohermother,“ForwhatshouldIask?”Andshesaid,“TheheadofJohntheBaptist.”25 Andshecameinimmediatelywithhastetothekingandasked,saying,“IwantyoutogivemeatoncetheheadofJohntheBaptistonaplatter.”26 Andthekingwasexceedinglysorry,butbecauseofhisoathsandhisguestshedidnotwanttobreakhiswordtoher.27 AndimmediatelythekingsentanexecutionerwithorderstobringJohn’s⁶head.Hewentandbeheadedhimintheprison28 andbroughthisheadonaplatterandgaveittothegirl,andthegirlgaveittohermother.29 Whenhis^hdisciplesheardofit,theycameandtookhisbodyandlaiditinatomb.

Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand

30 ^ijTheapostlesreturnedtoJesusandtoldhimallthattheyhaddoneandtaught.31 Andhesaidtothem,“Comeawaybyyourselvestoadesolateplaceandrestawhile.”Formanywerecomingandgoing,and^ktheyhadnoleisureeventoeat.32 ^lAndtheywentawayin^mtheboattoadesolateplacebythemselves.33 Nowmanysawthemgoingandⁿrecognizedthem,andtheyranthereonfootfromallthetownsandgotthereaheadofthem.34 Whenhewentashorehe^osawagreatcrowd,and^ohehadcompassiononthem,becausetheywerelikesheepwithoutashepherd.Andhebegantoteachthemmanythings.35 Andwhenitgrewlate,hisdisciplescametohimandsaid,“Thisisadesolateplace,andthehourisnowlate.36 ^pSendthemawaytogointothesurroundingcountrysideandvillagesandbuythemselvessomethingtoeat.”37 Butheansweredthem,^q“Yougivethemsomethingtoeat.”And^rtheysaidtohim,^s“Shallwegoandbuytwohundreddenarii⁷worthofbreadandgiveittothemtoeat?”38 Andhesaidtothem,“Howmanyloavesdoyouhave?Goandsee.”Andwhentheyhadfoundout,theysaid,^t“Five,andtwofish.”39 Thenhecommandedthemalltositdowningroupsonthegreengrass.40 Sotheysatdowningroups,byhundredsandbyfifties.41 Andtakingthefiveloavesandthetwofish,he^ulookeduptoheavenand^vsaidablessingandbroketheloavesandgavethemtothedisciplestosetbeforethepeople.Andhedividedthetwofishamongthemall.42 Andtheyallateandweresatisfied.43 Andtheytookuptwelvebasketsfullofbrokenpiecesandofthefish.44 Andthosewhoatetheloaveswerefivethousandmen.

Jesus Walks on the Water

45 ^wImmediatelyhe^xmadehisdisciplesgetinto^ytheboatandgobeforehimtotheotherside,^ztoBethsaida,whilehedismissedthecrowd.46 Andafterhehadtakenleaveofthem,^ahewentuponthemountaintopray.47 Andwhen^beveningcame,theboatwasoutonthesea,andhewasaloneontheland.48 Andhesawthattheyweremakingheadwaypainfully,forthewindwasagainstthem.Andabout^bthefourthwatchofthenight⁸hecametothem,walkingonthesea.^cHemeanttopassbythem,49 butwhentheysawhimwalkingontheseatheythoughtitwasaghost,andcriedout,50 fortheyallsawhimand^dwereterrified.Butimmediatelyhespoketothemandsaid,^e“Takeheart;itisI.^eDonotbeafraid.”51 Andhegotintotheboatwiththem,andthewindceased.Andtheywereutterlyastounded,52 for^ftheydidnotunderstandabouttheloaves,buttheirhearts^gwerehardened.

Jesus Heals the Sick in Gennesaret

53 ^hWhentheyhadcrossedover,theycametolandatⁱGennesaretandmooredtotheshore.54 Andwhentheygotoutoftheboat,thepeopleimmediately^jrecognizedhim55 andranaboutthewholeregionandbegantobring^kthesickpeople^lontheirbedstowherevertheyheardhewas.56 Andwhereverhecame,invillages,cities,orcountryside,^mtheylaidthesickinthemarketplacesandimploredhimthattheymighttouchevenⁿthefringeofhisgarment.And^oasmanyastoucheditweremadewell.

Traditions and Commandments

7 ^pNowwhenthePhariseesgatheredtohim,withsomeofthescribes^qwhohadcomefromJerusalem,2 theysawthatsomeofhisdisciplesatewithhandsthatwere^rdefiled,thatis,unwashed.3 (ForthePhariseesandalltheJewsdonoteatunlesstheywashtheirhandsproperly,¹holdingto^sthetraditionof^ttheelders,4 andwhentheycomefromthemarketplace,theydonoteatunlesstheywash.²Andtherearemanyothertraditionsthattheyobserve,suchas^uthewashingof^vcupsandpotsandcoppervesselsanddiningcouches.³)5 AndthePhariseesandthescribesaskedhim,“Whydoyourdisciplesnotwalkaccordingto^sthetraditionof^ttheelders,^wbuteatwith^rdefiledhands?”6 Andhesaidtothem,“WelldidIsaiahprophesyofyou^xhypocrites,asitiswritten,

8 YouleavethecommandmentofGodandholdtothetraditionofmen.”

9 Andhesaidtothem,“Youhaveafinewayof^arejectingthecommandmentofGodinordertoestablishyourtradition!10 ForMosessaid,^b‘Honoryourfatherandyourmother’;and,^c‘Whoeverrevilesfatherormothermustsurelydie.’11 Butyousay,‘Ifamantellshisfatherorhismother,“WhateveryouwouldhavegainedfrommeisCorban”’(thatis,giventoGod)⁴—12 thenyounolongerpermithimtodoanythingforhisfatherormother,13 thus^dmakingvoidthewordofGodbyyourtraditionthatyouhavehandeddown.Andmanysuchthingsyoudo.”

What Defiles a Person

14 Andhecalledthepeopletohimagainandsaidtothem,^e“Hearme,allofyou,andunderstand:15 ^fThereisnothingoutsideapersonthatbygoingintohimcandefilehim,butthethingsthatcomeoutofapersonarewhatdefilehim.”⁵17 Andwhenhehadentered^gthehouseandleftthepeople,^hhisdisciplesaskedhimabouttheparable.18 Andhesaidtothem,“Thenⁱareyoualsowithoutunderstanding?Doyounotseethatwhatevergoesintoapersonfromoutsidecannotdefilehim,19 sinceitentersnothisheart^jbuthisstomach,andisexpelled?”⁶(^kThushedeclaredallfoodsclean.)20 Andhesaid,^l“Whatcomesoutofapersoniswhatdefileshim.21 Forfromwithin,outoftheheartofman,comeevilthoughts,sexualimmorality,theft,^mmurder,adultery,22 coveting,wickedness,deceit,ⁿsensuality,^oenvy,^pslander,^qpride,^rfoolishness.23 ^sAlltheseevilthingscomefromwithin,andtheydefileaperson.”
