8 ^lInthosedays,whenagainagreatcrowdhadgathered,andtheyhadnothingtoeat,hecalledhisdisciplestohimandsaidtothem,2 ^m“Ihavecompassiononthecrowd,becausetheyhavebeenwithmenowthreedaysandhavenothingtoeat.3 AndifIsendthemawayhungrytotheirhomes,theywillfaintontheway.Andsomeofthemhavecomefromfaraway.”4 Andhisdisciplesansweredhim,“Howcanonefeedthesepeoplewithbreadhereinthisdesolateplace?”5 Andheaskedthem,“Howmanyloavesdoyouhave?”Theysaid,ⁿ“Seven.”6 Andhedirectedthecrowdtositdownontheground.Andhetookthesevenloaves,and^ohavinggiventhanks,hebrokethemandgavethemtohisdisciplestosetbeforethepeople;andtheysetthembeforethecrowd.7 Andtheyhadafewsmallfish.And^phavingblessedthem,hesaidthatthesealsoshouldbesetbeforethem.8 And^qtheyateandweresatisfied.Andtheytookupthebrokenpiecesleftover,ⁿsevenbasketsfull.9 Andtherewereaboutfourthousandpeople.Andhesentthemaway.10 Andimmediatelyhegotinto^rtheboatwithhisdisciplesandwenttothedistrictof^sDalmanutha.¹

The Pharisees Demand a Sign

11 ^tThePhariseescameandbegantoarguewithhim,^useekingfromhim^vasignfromheaven^wtotesthim.12 And^xhesigheddeeply^yinhisspiritandsaid,“Whydoesthisgenerationseekasign?Truly,Isaytoyou,nosignwillbegiventothisgeneration.”13 And^zheleftthem,gotintotheboatagain,andwenttotheotherside.

The Leaven of the Pharisees and Herod

14 Nowtheyhadforgottentobringbread,andtheyhadonlyoneloafwiththemintheboat.15 Andhecautionedthem,saying,“Watchout;^abewareof^btheleavenofthePhariseesandtheleavenof^cHerod.”²16 Andtheybegandiscussingwithoneanotherthefactthattheyhadnobread.17 And^dJesus,awareofthis,saidtothem,“Whyareyoudiscussingthefactthatyouhavenobread?^eDoyounotyetperceive^forunderstand?^fAreyourheartshardened?18 ^gHavingeyesdoyounotsee,andhavingearsdoyounothear?Anddoyounotremember?19 WhenIbroke^hthefiveloavesforthefivethousand,howmanybasketsfullofbrokenpiecesdidyoutakeup?”Theysaidtohim,“Twelve.”20 “Andⁱthesevenforthefourthousand,howmanybasketsfullofbrokenpiecesdidyoutakeup?”Andtheysaidtohim,“Seven.”21 Andhesaidtothem,“Doyounotyetunderstand?”

Jesus Heals a Blind Man at Bethsaida

22 Andtheycame^jtoBethsaida.Andsomepeoplebroughttohimablindmanandbeggedhimtotouchhim.23 And^khetooktheblindmanbythehandandledhimoutofthevillage,andwhen^khehad^lspitonhiseyesand^mlaidhishandsonhim,heaskedhim,“Doyouseeanything?”24 Andhelookedupandsaid,“Iseepeople,buttheylookliketrees,walking.”25 ThenJesus³laidhishandsonhiseyesagain;andheopenedhiseyes,hissightwasrestored,andhesaweverythingclearly.26 Andhesenthimtohishome,saying,ⁿ“Donotevenenterthevillage.”

Peter Confesses Jesus as the Christ

27 ^oAndJesuswentonwithhisdisciplestothevillagesofCaesareaPhilippi.Andonthewayheaskedhisdisciples,“WhodopeoplesaythatIam?”28 Andtheytoldhim,^p“JohntheBaptist;andotherssay,^qElijah;andothers,oneoftheprophets.”29 Andheaskedthem,“ButwhodoyousaythatIam?”Peteransweredhim,^r“Youare^stheChrist.”30 ^tAndhestrictlychargedthemtotellnooneabouthim.

Jesus Foretells His Death and Resurrection

31 ^uAndhebegantoteachthemthat^vtheSonofManmust^wsuffermanythingsand^xberejectedbytheeldersandthechiefpriestsandthescribesandbekilled,and^yafterthreedaysriseagain.32 Andhesaidthis^zplainly.AndPetertookhimasideandbegantorebukehim.33 Butturningandseeinghisdisciples,herebukedPeterandsaid,^a“Getbehindme,Satan!Foryou^barenotsettingyourmindonthethingsofGod,butonthethingsofman.”

34 Andcallingthecrowdtohimwithhisdisciples,hesaidtothem,“Ifanyonewouldcomeafterme,lethim^cdenyhimselfand^dtakeuphiscrossandfollowme.35 For^dwhoeverwouldsavehislife⁴willloseit,butwhoeverloseshislifeformysake^eandthegospel’swillsaveit.36 ^fForwhatdoesitprofitamantogainthewholeworldandforfeithissoul?37 For^gwhatcanamangiveinreturnforhissoul?38 For^hwhoeverisashamedofmeandofmywordsinthisⁱadulterousandsinfulgeneration,ofhimwilltheSonofManalsobeashamed^jwhenhecomesinthegloryofhisFatherwith^ktheholyangels.”

9 Andhesaidtothem,“Truly,Isaytoyou,therearesomestandingherewhowillnot^ltastedeath^muntiltheyseethekingdomofGodafterithascomeⁿwithpower.”

The Transfiguration

2 ^oAndaftersixdaysJesustookwithhim^pPeterandJamesandJohn,andledthemupahighmountainbythemselves.Andhewas^qtransfiguredbeforethem,3 and^rhisclothesbecameradiant,intenselywhite,asnoone¹onearthcouldbleachthem.4 AndthereappearedtothemElijahwithMoses,andtheyweretalkingwithJesus.5 AndPetersaidtoJesus,^s“Rabbi,²itisgoodthatwearehere.Letusmakethree^ttents,oneforyouandoneforMosesandoneforElijah.”6 For^uhedidnotknowwhattosay,fortheywereterrified.7 And^vacloudovershadowedthem,and^vavoicecameoutofthecloud,^w“ThisismybelovedSon;^3xlistentohim.”8 Andsuddenly,lookingaround,theynolongersawanyonewiththembutJesusonly.

9 ^yAndastheywerecomingdownthemountain,^zhechargedthemtotellnoonewhattheyhadseen,^auntiltheSonofManhadrisenfromthedead.10 ^bSotheykeptthemattertothemselves,^cquestioningwhatthisrisingfromthedeadmightmean.11 Andtheyaskedhim,“Whydothescribessay^dthatfirstElijahmustcome?”12 Andhesaidtothem,“Elijahdoescomefirst^etorestoreallthings.And^fhowisitwrittenoftheSonofManthatheshould^gsuffermanythingsand^hbetreatedwithcontempt?13 ButItellyouthatElijahhascome,andⁱtheydidtohimwhatevertheypleased,asitiswrittenofhim.”

Jesus Heals a Boy with an Unclean Spirit

14 ^jAndwhentheycametothedisciples,theysawagreatcrowdaroundthem,andscribesarguingwiththem.15 Andimmediatelyallthecrowd,whentheysawhim,^kweregreatlyamazedandranuptohimandgreetedhim.16 Andheaskedthem,“Whatareyouarguingaboutwiththem?”17 Andsomeonefromthecrowdansweredhim,“Teacher,Ibroughtmysontoyou,forhehas^laspiritthatmakeshimmute.18 Andwheneveritseizeshim,itthrowshimdown,andhefoamsandgrindshisteethandbecomesrigid.SoIaskedyourdisciplestocastitout,and^mtheywerenotable.”19 Andheansweredthem,“Oⁿfaithlessgeneration,ⁿhowlongamItobewithyou?HowlongamItobearwithyou?Bringhimtome.”20 Andtheybroughttheboytohim.Andwhenthespiritsawhim,immediatelyit^oconvulsedtheboy,andhefellonthegroundandrolledabout,foamingatthemouth.21 AndJesusaskedhisfather,“Howlonghasthisbeenhappeningtohim?”Andhesaid,“Fromchildhood.22 Andithasoftencasthimintofireandintowater,todestroyhim.But^pifyoucandoanything,havecompassiononusandhelpus.”23 AndJesussaidtohim,^p“‘Ifyoucan’!^qAllthingsarepossibleforonewhobelieves.”24 Immediatelythefatherofthechildcriedout⁴andsaid,“Ibelieve;^rhelpmyunbelief!”25 AndwhenJesussawthat^sacrowdcamerunningtogether,herebukedtheuncleanspirit,sayingtoit,^t“Youmuteanddeafspirit,Icommandyou,comeoutofhimandneverenterhimagain.”26 Andaftercryingoutand^oconvulsinghimterribly,itcameout,andtheboywaslikeacorpse,sothatmostofthemsaid,“Heisdead.”27 ButJesus^utookhimbythehandandliftedhimup,andhearose.28 Andwhenhehad^venteredthehouse,hisdisciplesaskedhimprivately,“Whycouldwenotcastitout?”29 Andhesaidtothem,“Thiskindcannotbedrivenoutbyanythingbutprayer.”⁵

Jesus Again Foretells Death, Resurrection

30 ^wTheywentonfromthereandpassedthroughGalilee.Andhedidnotwantanyonetoknow,31 forhewasteachinghisdisciples,sayingtothem,“TheSonofManisgoingtobedeliveredintothehandsofmen,andtheywillkillhim.Andwhenheiskilled,^xafterthreedayshewillrise.”32 ^yButtheydidnotunderstandthesaying,andwereafraidtoaskhim.

Who Is the Greatest?

33 And^ztheycametoCapernaum.Andwhenhewasinthehouse^aheaskedthem,“Whatwereyoudiscussingontheway?”34 Buttheykeptsilent,forontheway^btheyhadarguedwithoneanotheraboutwhowasthegreatest.35 Andhesatdownandcalledthetwelve.Andhesaidtothem,^c“Ifanyonewouldbefirst,hemustbelastofallandservantofall.”36 Andhetookachildandputhiminthemidstofthem,and^dtakinghiminhisarms,hesaidtothem,37 ^e“Whoeverreceivesonesuchchildinmynamereceivesme,and^ewhoeverreceivesme,receivesnotmebuthimwhosentme.”

Anyone Not Against Us Is for Us

38 ^fJohnsaidtohim,“Teacher,wesawsomeone^gcastingoutdemonsinyourname,⁶and^hwetriedtostophim,becausehewasnotfollowingus.”39 ButJesussaid,“Donotstophim,fornoonewhodoesamightyworkinmynamewillbeablesoonafterwardtospeakevilofme.40 ⁱFortheonewhoisnotagainstusisforus.41 Fortruly,Isaytoyou,^jwhoevergivesyouacupofwatertodrinkbecause⁷youbelongtoChristwillbynomeanslosehisreward.

Temptations to Sin

42 ^k“Whoevercausesoneof^ltheselittleoneswhobelieveinmetosin,^8mitwouldbebetterforhimifagreatmillstonewerehungaroundhisneckandhewerethrownintothesea.43 ⁿAndifyourhandcausesyoutosin,cutitoff.Itisbetterforyoutoenterlifecrippledthanwithtwohandstogoto^ohell,⁹to^ptheunquenchablefire.¹⁰45 ^qAndifyourfootcausesyoutosin,cutitoff.Itisbetterforyoutoenterlifelamethanwithtwofeettobethrowninto^ohell.47 ^rAndifyoureyecausesyoutosin,tearitout.ItisbetterforyoutoenterthekingdomofGodwithoneeyethanwithtwoeyestobethrowninto^shell,48 ‘where^ttheirwormdoesnotdieandthefireisnotquenched.’49 Foreveryonewillbesaltedwithfire.¹¹50 ^vSaltisgood,^wbutifthesalthaslostitssaltiness,howwillyoumakeitsaltyagain?^xHavesaltinyourselves,and^ybeatpeacewithoneanother.”

Teaching About Divorce

10 ^zAndheleftthereandwent^atotheregionofJudeaandbeyondtheJordan,andcrowdsgatheredtohimagain.Andagain,aswashiscustom,hetaughtthem.

2 AndPhariseescameupandinorder^btotesthimasked,^c“Isitlawfulforamantodivorcehiswife?”3 Heansweredthem,“WhatdidMosescommandyou?”4 Theysaid,^d“Mosesallowedamantowriteacertificateofdivorceandtosendheraway.”5 AndJesussaidtothem,“Becauseofyour^ehardnessofhearthewroteyouthiscommandment.6 But^ffromthebeginningofcreation,‘Godmadethem^gmaleandfemale.’7 ^h‘Thereforeamanshallleavehisfatherandmotherandholdfasttohiswife,¹8 andⁱthetwoshallbecomeoneflesh.’Sotheyarenolongertwobutoneflesh.9 ^jWhatthereforeGodhasjoinedtogether,letnotmanseparate.”

10 Andinthehousethedisciplesaskedhimagainaboutthismatter.11 Andhesaidtothem,^k“Whoeverdivorceshiswifeandmarriesanothercommitsadulteryagainsther,12 and^lifshedivorcesherhusbandandmarriesanother,shecommitsadultery.”

Let the Children Come to Me

13 ^mAndtheywerebringingchildrentohimthathemighttouchthem,andthedisciplesⁿrebukedthem.14 ButwhenJesussawit,hewasindignantandsaidtothem,^o“Letthechildrencometome;^pdonothinderthem,fortosuchbelongsthekingdomofGod.15 ^qTruly,Isaytoyou,whoeverdoesnot^rreceivethekingdomofGodlikeachildshallnotenterit.”16 And^shetooktheminhisarmsandblessedthem,^tlayinghishandsonthem.

The Rich Young Man

17 ^uAndashewassettingoutonhisjourney,amanranupand^vkneltbeforehimandaskedhim,“GoodTeacher,whatmustIdoto^winheriteternallife?”18 AndJesussaidtohim,“Whydoyoucallmegood?NooneisgoodexceptGodalone.19 Youknowthecommandments:^x‘Donotmurder,Donotcommitadultery,Donotsteal,Donotbearfalsewitness,Donotdefraud,Honoryourfatherandmother.’”20 Andhesaidtohim,“Teacher,^yalltheseIhavekeptfrommyyouth.”21 AndJesus,^zlookingathim,^alovedhim,andsaidtohim,“Youlackonething:go,^bsellallthatyouhaveandgivetothepoor,andyouwillhave^ctreasureinheaven;andcome,followme.”22 ^dDisheartenedbythesaying,hewentawaysorrowful,forhehadgreatpossessions.

23 AndJesus^elookedaroundandsaidtohisdisciples,^f“Howdifficultitwillbeforthosewhohavewealthtoenter^gthekingdomofGod!”24 Andthedisciples^hwereamazedathiswords.ButJesussaidtothemagain,ⁱ“Children,^jhowdifficultitis²toenter^gthekingdomofGod!25 Itiseasierforacameltogothroughtheeyeofaneedlethanforarichpersontoenter^gthekingdomofGod.”26 Andtheywereexceedinglyastonished,andsaidtohim,³“Thenwhocanbesaved?”27 Jesus^klookedatthemandsaid,^l“Withmanitisimpossible,butnotwithGod.ForallthingsarepossiblewithGod.”28 Peterbegantosaytohim,“See,^mwehavelefteverythingandfollowedyou.”29 Jesussaid,“Truly,Isaytoyou,ⁿthereisnoonewhohaslefthouseorbrothersorsistersormotherorfatherorchildrenorlands,formysakeand^oforthegospel,30 whowillnotreceiveahundredfold^pnowinthistime,housesandbrothersandsistersandmothersandchildrenandlands,^qwithpersecutions,andin^rtheagetocomeeternallife.31 But^smanywhoarefirstwillbelast,andthelastfirst.”

Jesus Foretells His Death a Third Time

32 ^tAndtheywereontheroad,goinguptoJerusalem,and^uJesuswaswalkingaheadofthem.And^vtheywereamazed,andthosewhofollowedwereafraid.Andtakingthetwelveagain,hebegantotellthemwhatwastohappentohim,33 saying,“See,^wwearegoinguptoJerusalem,andtheSonofManwillbedeliveredovertothechiefpriestsandthescribes,andtheywill^xcondemnhimtodeathand^ydeliverhimovertotheGentiles.34 Andtheywill^zmockhimand^aspitonhim,andfloghimandkillhim.And^bafterthreedayshewillrise.”

The Request of James and John

35 ^cAndJamesandJohn,^dthesonsofZebedee,cameuptohimandsaidtohim,“Teacher,wewantyoutodoforus^ewhateverweaskofyou.”36 Andhesaidtothem,^f“Whatdoyouwantmetodoforyou?”37 Andtheysaidtohim,“Grantus^gtosit,oneatyourrighthandandoneatyourleft,^hinyourglory.”38 Jesussaidtothem,ⁱ“Youdonotknowwhatyouareasking.Areyouable^jtodrinkthecupthatIdrink,or^ktobebaptizedwiththebaptismwithwhichIambaptized?”39 Andtheysaidtohim,“Weareable.”AndJesussaidtothem,^l“ThecupthatIdrink^myouwilldrink,andwiththebaptismwithwhichIambaptized,ⁿyouwillbebaptized,40 buttositatmyrighthandoratmyleftisnotminetogrant,^obutitisforthoseforwhomithasbeen^pprepared.”41 Andwhenthetenheardit,theybegantobeindignantatJamesandJohn.42 ^qAndJesuscalledthemtohimandsaidtothem,“YouknowthatthosewhoareconsideredrulersoftheGentiles^rlorditoverthem,andtheirgreatonesexerciseauthorityoverthem.43 But^sitshallnotbesoamongyou.Butwhoeverwouldbegreatamongyoumustbeyourservant,⁴44 andwhoeverwouldbefirstamongyoumustbe^tslave⁵ofall.45 ForeventheSonofMancamenottobeservedbut^utoserve,and^vtogivehislifeasaransomfor^wmany.”

Jesus Heals Blind Bartimaeus

46 ^xAndtheycametoJericho.And^yashewasleavingJerichowithhisdisciplesandagreatcrowd,Bartimaeus,^zablindbeggar,thesonofTimaeus,wassittingbytheroadside.47 Andwhenheheardthatitwas^aJesusofNazareth,hebegantocryoutandsay,“Jesus,SonofDavid,havemercyonme!”48 Andmany^brebukedhim,tellinghimtobesilent.Buthecriedoutallthemore,“SonofDavid,havemercyonme!”49 AndJesusstoppedandsaid,“Callhim.”Andtheycalledtheblindman,sayingtohim,^c“Takeheart.Getup;heiscallingyou.”50 Andthrowingoffhis^dcloak,hesprangupandcametoJesus.51 AndJesussaidtohim,^e“Whatdoyouwantmetodoforyou?”Andtheblindmansaidtohim,^f“Rabbi,letmerecovermysight.”52 AndJesussaidtohim,“Goyourway;^gyourfaithhas^hmadeyouwell.”Andimmediatelyherecoveredhissightandfollowedhimontheway.

The Triumphal Entry

11 ⁱNowwhentheydrewneartoJerusalem,to^jBethphageandBethany,at^ktheMountofOlives,Jesus¹sent^ltwoofhisdisciples2 andsaidtothem,“Gointothevillageinfrontofyou,andimmediatelyasyouenterityouwillfindacolttied,^monwhichnoonehaseversat.Untieitandbringit.3 Ifanyonesaystoyou,‘Whyareyoudoingthis?’say,‘TheLordhasneedofitandwillsenditbackhereimmediately.’”4 Andtheywentawayandfoundacolttiedatadooroutsideinthestreet,andtheyuntiedit.5 Andsomeofthosestandingtheresaidtothem,“Whatareyoudoing,untyingthecolt?”6 AndtheytoldthemwhatJesushadsaid,andtheyletthemgo.7 AndtheybroughtthecolttoJesusandthrewtheircloaksonit,andhesatonit.8 Andmanyⁿspreadtheircloaksontheroad,andothersspreadleafybranchesthattheyhadcutfromthefields.9 Andthosewhowentbeforeandthosewhofollowedwereshouting,^o“Hosanna!^pBlessedishewhocomesinthenameoftheLord!10 Blessedis^qthecoming^rkingdomof^sourfather^rDavid!^oHosanna^tinthehighest!”
