The Sadducees Ask About the Resurrection
18 AndkSadduceescametohim,lwhosaythatthereisnoresurrection.Andtheyaskedhimaquestion,saying,19 “Teacher,Moseswroteforusthatmifaman’sbrotherdiesandleavesawife,butleavesnochild,theman5musttakethewidowandraiseupoffspringforhisbrother.20 Thereweresevenbrothers;thefirsttookawife,andwhenhediedleftnooffspring.21 Andthesecondtookher,anddied,leavingnooffspring.Andthethirdlikewise.22 Andthesevenleftnooffspring.Lastofallthewomanalsodied.23 Intheresurrection,whentheyriseagain,whosewifewillshebe?Forthesevenhadheraswife.”
24 Jesussaidtothem,“Isthisnotthereasonyouarewrong,becausenyouknowneithertheScripturesnorothepowerofGod?25 Forwhentheyrisefromthedead,theyneitherpmarrynorparegiveninmarriage,butarelikeangelsinheaven.26 Andasforthedeadbeingraised,qhaveyounotreadinrthebookofMoses,insthepassageaboutthebush,howGodspoketohim,saying,t‘IamtheGodofAbraham,andtheGodofIsaac,andtheGodofJacob’?27 HeisnotGodofthedead,butoftheliving.Youarequitewrong.”

28 uAndoneofthescribescameupandheardthemdisputingwithoneanother,andseeingthatheansweredthemwell,askedhim,“Whichcommandmentisthemostimportantofall?”29 Jesusanswered,“Themostimportantis,v‘Hear,OIsrael:TheLordourGod,wtheLordisone.30 AndyoushalllovetheLordyourGodwithallyourheartandwithallyoursoulandwithallyourmindandwithallyourstrength.’31 xThesecondisthis:y‘Youshallloveyourneighborasyourself.’Thereisnoothercommandmentzgreaterthanthese.”32 Andthescribesaidtohim,“Youareright,Teacher.Youhavetrulysaidthatwheisone,andathereisnootherbesideshim.33 Andtolovehimwithalltheheartandwithallbtheunderstandingandwithallthestrength,andtoloveone’sneighborasoneself,cismuchmorethanalldwholeburntofferingsandsacrifices.”34 AndwhenJesussawthatheansweredwisely,hesaidtohim,“YouarenotfarfromthekingdomofGod.”eAndafterthatnoonedaredtoaskhimanymorequestions.

35 fAndasgJesustaughtinthetemple,hesaid,“HowcanthescribessaythaththeChrististhesonofDavid?36 Davidhimself,iintheHolySpirit,declared,

Beware of the Scribes
38 nAndinhisteachinghesaid,“Bewareofthescribes,wholiketowalkaroundinlongrobesandlikegreetingsinthemarketplaces39 andhavethebestseatsinthesynagoguesandotheplacesofhonoratfeasts,40 pwhodevourwidows’housesandqforapretensemakelongprayers.Theywillreceivethegreatercondemnation.”

41 rAndhesatdownoppositesthetreasuryandwatchedthepeopletputtingmoneyintotheofferingbox.Manyrichpeopleputinlargesums.42 Andapoorwidowcameandputintwousmallcoppercoins,whichmakeapenny.643 Andhecalledhisdisciplestohimandsaidtothem,“Truly,Isaytoyou,vthispoorwidowhasputinmorethanallthosewhoarecontributingtotheofferingbox.44 Fortheyallcontributedoutoftheirabundance,butsheoutofherwpovertyhasputineverythingshehad,allxshehadtoliveon.”
