6 vNowwhenJesuswasatwBethanyinthehouseofSimontheleper,17 awomancameuptohimwithanalabasterflaskofveryexpensiveointment,andshepoureditonhisheadashereclinedattable.8 Andwhenthedisciplessawit,theywereindignant,saying,“Whythiswaste?9 Forthiscouldhavebeensoldforalargesumandxgiventothepoor.”10 ButyJesus,awareofthis,saidtothem,“Whydoyoutroublethewoman?Forshehasdoneabeautifulthingtome.11 Forzyoualwayshavethepoorwithyou,butayouwillnotalwayshaveme.12 Inpouringthisointmentonmybody,shehasdoneitbtopreparemeforburial.13 Truly,Isaytoyou,wherevercthisgospelisproclaimedinthewholeworld,whatshehasdonewillalsobetolddinmemoryofher.”

14 eThenoneofthetwelve,whosenamewasfJudasIscariot,wenttothechiefpriests15 andsaid,“WhatwillyougivemeifIdeliverhimovertoyou?”Andtheygpaidhimhthirtypiecesofsilver.16 Andfromthatmomenthesoughtanopportunityitobetrayhim.
The Passover with the Disciples
17 jNowonkthefirstdayofUnleavenedBreadthedisciplescametoJesus,saying,“WherewillyouhaveusprepareforyoutoeatthePassover?”18 Hesaid,“Gointothecitytoacertainmanandsaytohim,l‘TheTeachersays,mMytimeisathand.IwillkeepthePassoveratyourhousewithmydisciples.’”19 AndthedisciplesdidasJesushaddirectedthem,andtheypreparedthePassover.
20 nWhenitwasevening,hereclinedattablewiththetwelve.221 Andastheywereeating,ohesaid,“Truly,Isaytoyou,oneofyouwillbetrayme.”22 Andtheywereverysorrowfulandbegantosaytohimoneafteranother,“IsitI,Lord?”23 Heanswered,p“Hewhohasdippedhishandinthedishwithmewillbetrayme.24 TheSonofMangoesqasitiswrittenofhim,butrwoetothatmanbywhomtheSonofManisbetrayed!sItwouldhavebeenbetterforthatmanifhehadnotbeenborn.”25 Judas,whowouldbetrayhim,answered,“IsitI,tRabbi?”Hesaidtohim,u“Youhavesaidso.”

26 vNowastheywereeating,Jesustookbread,andwafterblessingitbrokeitandgaveittothedisciples,andsaid,“Take,eat;xthisismybody.”27 Andhetookacup,andwhenheyhadgiventhankshegaveittothem,saying,“Drinkofit,allofyou,28 forxthisismyzbloodofthe3covenant,whichispouredoutforamanybfortheforgivenessofsins.29 ItellyouIwillnotdrinkagainofthisfruitofthevineuntilthatdaywhenIdrinkitnewwithyoucinmyFather’skingdom.”

57 pThenqthosewhohadseizedJesusledhimtorCaiaphasthehighpriest,wherethescribesandtheeldershadgathered.58 AndsPeterwasfollowinghimatadistance,asfarasrthecourtyardofthehighpriest,andgoinginsidehesatwithttheguardstoseetheend.59 Nowthechiefpriestsandthewholecouncil8uwereseekingfalsetestimonyagainstJesusthattheymightputhimtodeath,60 buttheyfoundnone,vthoughmanyfalsewitnessescameforward.Atlastwtwocameforward61 andsaid,“Thismansaid,x‘IamabletoydestroythetempleofGod,andtorebuilditinthreedays.’”62 Andthehighprieststoodupandsaid,“Haveyounoanswertomake?Whatisitthatthesementestifyagainstyou?”963 zButJesusremainedsilent.aAndthehighpriestsaidtohim,b“IadjureyoubycthelivingGod,dtellusifyouareetheChrist,ftheSonofGod.”64 Jesussaidtohim,g“Youhavesaidso.ButItellyou,fromnowonhyouwillseetheSonofManiseatedattherighthandofPowerandhcomingonthecloudsofheaven.”65 Thenthehighpriestjtorehisrobesandsaid,k“Hehasutteredblasphemy.Whatfurtherwitnessesdoweneed?Youhavenowheardhisblasphemy.66 Whatisyourjudgment?”Theyanswered,l“Hedeservesdeath.”67 Thenmtheyspitinhisfacenandostruckhim.Andsomeslappedhim,68 saying,“Prophesytous,youpChrist!Whoisitthatstruckyou?”
Peter Denies Jesus
69 qNowPeterwassittingoutsiderinthecourtyard.Andaservantgirlcameuptohimandsaid,“YoualsowerewithJesustheGalilean.”70 Buthedenieditbeforethemall,saying,“Idonotknowwhatyoumean.”71 Andwhenhewentouttotheentrance,anotherservantgirlsawhim,andshesaidtothebystanders,“ThismanwaswithJesussofNazareth.”72 Andagainhedenieditwithanoath:“Idonotknowtheman.”73 AfteralittlewhilethebystanderscameupandsaidtoPeter,“Certainlyyoutooareoneofthem,fortyouraccentbetraysyou.”74 Thenhebegantoinvokeacurseonhimselfandtoswear,“Idonotknowtheman.”Andimmediatelytheroostercrowed.75 AndPeterrememberedthesayingofJesus,u“Beforetheroostercrows,youwillvdenymethreetimes.”Andhewentoutandweptbitterly.
Jesus Delivered to Pilate
27 wWhenmorningcame,allthechiefpriestsandtheeldersofthepeoplextookcounselagainstJesustoputhimtodeath.2 AndtheyboundhimandyledhimawayandzdeliveredhimovertoaPilatethegovernor.
Judas Hangs Himself
3 ThenwhenbJudas,hisbetrayer,sawthatJesus1wascondemned,chechangedhismindandbroughtbackdthethirtypiecesofsilvertothechiefpriestsandtheelders,4 saying,“Ihavesinnedbybetrayinginnocentblood.”Theysaid,“Whatisthattous?eSeetoityourself.”5 Andthrowingdownthepiecesofsilverintothetemple,fhedeparted,andhewentandhangedhimself.6 Butthechiefpriests,takingthepiecesofsilver,said,“Itisnotlawfultoputthemintogthetreasury,sinceitisbloodmoney.”7 Sotheytookcounselandboughtwiththemthepotter’sfieldasaburialplaceforstrangers.8 ThereforehthatfieldhasbeencalledtheFieldofBlooditothisday.9 jThenwasfulfilledwhathadbeenspokenbytheprophetJeremiah,saying,k“Andtheytookthethirtypiecesofsilver,thepriceofhimonwhomapricehadbeensetbysomeofthesonsofIsrael,10 andtheygavethemforthepotter’sfield,astheLorddirectedme.”
Jesus Before Pilate
11 lNowJesusstoodbeforethegovernor,andthegovernoraskedhim,“AreyoumtheKingoftheJews?”Jesussaid,n“Youhavesaidso.”12 oButwhenhewasaccusedbythechiefpriestsandelders,hegavenoanswer.13 ThenPilatesaidtohim,p“Doyounothearhowmanythingstheytestifyagainstyou?”14 Buthegavehimnoanswer,noteventoasinglecharge,sothatthegovernorwasgreatlyamazed.
The Crowd Chooses Barabbas
15 qNowatthefeastthegovernorwasaccustomedtoreleaseforthecrowdanyoneprisonerwhomtheywanted.16 AndtheyhadthenanotoriousprisonercalledBarabbas.17 Sowhentheyhadgathered,Pilatesaidtothem,“Whomdoyouwantmetoreleaseforyou:Barabbas,orrJesuswhoiscalledChrist?”18 Forheknewthatitwasoutsofenvythattheyhaddeliveredhimup.19 Besides,whilehewassittingontthejudgmentseat,hiswifesentwordtohim,“Havenothingtodowithuthatrighteousman,forIhavesufferedmuchbecauseofhimtodayvinadream.”20 NowthechiefpriestsandtheelderspersuadedthecrowdtowaskforBarabbasanddestroyJesus.21 Thegovernoragainsaidtothem,“Whichofthetwodoyouwantmetoreleaseforyou?”Andtheysaid,“Barabbas.”22 Pilatesaidtothem,“ThenwhatshallIdowithJesuswhoiscalledChrist?”xTheyallsaid,“Lethimbecrucified!”23 Andhesaid,“Why?yWhatevilhashedone?”Buttheyshoutedallthemore,“Lethimbecrucified!”
Pilate Delivers Jesus to Be Crucified
24 SowhenPilatesawthathewasgainingnothing,butratherthatzariotwasbeginning,hetookwaterandawashedhishandsbeforethecrowd,saying,“Iaminnocentofbthisman’sblood;2cseetoityourselves.”25 Andallthepeopleanswered,d“Hisbloodbeonusandeonourchildren!”26 ThenhereleasedforthemBarabbas,andhavingfscourged3Jesus,deliveredhimtobecrucified.
Jesus Is Mocked
27 gThenthesoldiersofthegovernortookJesusintothehgovernor’sheadquarters,4andtheygatheredthewholeibattalion5beforehim.28 Andtheystrippedhimandputjascarletrobeonhim,29 andtwistingtogetheracrownofthorns,theyputitonhisheadandputareedinhisrighthand.Andkneelingbeforehim,theykmockedhim,saying,“Hail,lKingoftheJews!”30 Andmtheyspitonhimandtookthereedandstruckhimonthehead.31 Andwhentheyhadmockedhim,theystrippedhimoftherobeandputhisownclothesonhimandnledhimawaytocrucifyhim.

32 opAstheywentout,theyfoundamanofCyrene,Simonbyname.Theycompelledthismantoocarryhiscross.33 qAndwhentheycametoaplacecalledGolgotha(whichmeansPlaceofaSkull),34 rtheyofferedhimwinetodrink,mixedwithsgall,butwhenhetastedit,hewouldnotdrinkit.35 Andwhentheyhadcrucifiedhim,ttheydividedhisgarmentsamongthembycastinglots.36 Thentheysatdownandukeptwatchoverhimthere.37 Andoverhisheadtheyputthechargeagainsthim,whichread,“ThisisJesus,vtheKingoftheJews.”38 Thentwowrobberswerecrucifiedwithhim,xoneontherightandoneontheleft.39 Andythosewhopassedbyzderidedhim,awaggingtheirheads40 andsaying,b“Youwhowoulddestroythetempleandrebuilditinthreedays,saveyourself!cIfyouaredtheSonofGod,comedownfromthecross.”41 Soalsothechiefpriests,withthescribesandelders,mockedhim,saying,42 e“Hesavedothers;fhecannotsavehimself.gHeistheKingofIsrael;lethimcomedownnowfromthecross,andwewillbelieveinhim.43 hHetrustsinGod;letGoddeliverhimnow,ifhedesireshim.Forhesaid,‘IamtheSonofGod.’”44 iAndtherobberswhowerecrucifiedwithhimalsoreviledhiminthesameway.

45 Nowfromthesixthhour6therewasdarknessoveralltheland7untiltheninthhour.846 AndabouttheninthhourJesusjcriedoutwithaloudvoice,saying,k“Eli,Eli,lemasabachthani?”thatis,“MyGod,myGod,whyhaveyouforsakenme?”47 Andsomeofthebystanders,hearingit,said,“ThismaniscallingElijah.”48 Andoneofthematonceranandtookasponge,filleditwithlsourwine,andputitonareedandmgaveittohimtodrink.49 Buttheotherssaid,“Wait,letusseewhetherElijahwillcometosavehim.”50 AndJesusncriedoutagainwithaloudvoiceandoyieldeduphisspirit.
51 Andbehold,pthecurtainofthetemplewastornintwo,fromtoptobottom.Andqtheearthshook,andtherocksweresplit.52 Thetombsalsowereopened.Andmanybodiesofrthesaintsswhohadfallenasleepwereraised,53 andcomingoutofthetombsafterhisresurrectiontheywentintottheholycityandappearedtomany.54 uWhenthecenturionandthosewhowerewithhim,vkeepingwatchoverJesus,sawtheearthquakeandwhattookplace,theywerefilledwithaweandsaid,w“TrulythiswastheSon9ofGod!”
55 Therewerealsoxmanywomenthere,lookingonyfromadistance,whohadfollowedJesusfromGalilee,zministeringtohim,56 amongwhomwerezMaryMagdaleneandMarythemotherofJamesandJosephandathemotherofthesonsofZebedee.

57 bWhenitwasevening,therecamearichmanfromArimathea,namedJoseph,whoalsowasadiscipleofJesus.58 HewenttoPilateandaskedforthebodyofJesus.ThenPilateorderedittobegiventohim.59 AndJosephtookthebodyandwrappeditinacleanlinenshroud60 andclaiditinhisownnewtomb,dwhichhehadcutintherock.Andherolledeagreatstonetotheentranceofthetombandwentaway.61 MaryMagdaleneandftheotherMarywerethere,sittingoppositethetomb.

62 Thenextday,thatis,afterthedayofgPreparation,thechiefpriestsandthePhariseesgatheredbeforePilate63 andsaid,“Sir,werememberhowhthatimpostorsaid,whilehewasstillalive,i‘AfterthreedaysIwillrise.’64 Thereforeorderthetombtobemadesecureuntilthethirdday,jlesthisdisciplesgoandstealhimawayandtellthepeople,‘Hehasrisenfromthedead,’andthelastfraudwillbeworsethanthefirst.”65 Pilatesaidtothem,“Youhavekaguard10ofsoldiers.Go,makeitassecureasyoucan.”66 Sotheywentandmadethetombsecurebylsealingthestoneandsettingaguard.
The Resurrection

11 Whiletheyweregoing,behold,someofatheguardwentintothecityandtoldthechiefpriestsallthathadtakenplace.12 Andwhentheyhadassembledwiththeeldersandtakencounsel,theygaveasufficientsumofmoneytothesoldiers13 andsaid,“Tellpeople,b‘Hisdisciplescamebynightandstolehimawaywhilewewereasleep.’14 Andifthiscomestocthegovernor’sears,wewilldsatisfyhimandkeepyououtoftrouble.”15 Sotheytookthemoneyanddidastheyweredirected.AndthisstoryhasbeenspreadamongtheJewsetothisday.

18 NowkJohn’sdisciplesandthePhariseeswerefasting.Andpeoplecameandsaidtohim,l“WhydoJohn’sdisciplesandmthedisciplesofthePhariseesfast,butyourdisciplesdonotfast?”19 AndJesussaidtothem,n“Cantheweddingguestsfastwhilethebridegroomiswiththem?Aslongastheyhavethebridegroomwiththem,theycannotfast.20 oThedayswillcomewhenthebridegroomistakenawayfromthem,andpthentheywillfastinthatday.21 Noonesewsapieceofunshrunkclothonanoldgarment.Ifhedoes,thepatchtearsawayfromit,thenewfromtheold,andaworsetearismade.22 Andnooneputsnewwineintooldqwineskins.Ifhedoes,thewinewillbursttheskins—andthewineisdestroyed,andsoaretheskins.Butnewwineisforfreshwineskins.”3

23 rOneSabbathhewasgoingthroughthegrainfields,andastheymadetheirway,hisdisciplessbegantopluckheadsofgrain.24 AndthePhariseesweresayingtohim,“Look,twhyaretheydoinguwhatisnotlawfulontheSabbath?”25 Andhesaidtothem,v“HaveyouneverreadwwhatDaviddid,whenhewasinneedandwashungry,heandthosewhowerewithhim:26 howheenteredthehouseofGod,inthetimeof4xAbiatharthehighpriest,andateythebreadofthePresence,whichitisnotlawfulforanybuttheprieststoeat,andalsogaveittothosewhowerewithhim?”27 Andhesaidtothem,z“TheSabbathwasmadeforman,anotmanfortheSabbath.28 SobtheSonofManislordevenoftheSabbath.”
