The Plot to Kill Jesus

26 WhenJesushadfinishedallthesesayings,hesaidtohisdisciples,2 ^m“YouknowthataftertwodaysⁿthePassoveriscoming,and^otheSonofMan^pwillbedelivereduptobecrucified.”

3 ^qThenthechiefpriestsandtheeldersofthepeoplegatheredin^rthepalaceofthehighpriest,whosenamewas^sCaiaphas,4 ^tandplottedtogetherinordertoarrestJesusbystealthandkillhim.5 Buttheysaid,“Notduringthefeast,^ulesttherebeanuproaramongthepeople.”

Jesus Anointed at Bethany

6 ^vNowwhenJesuswasat^wBethanyinthehouseofSimontheleper,¹7 awomancameuptohimwithanalabasterflaskofveryexpensiveointment,andshepoureditonhisheadashereclinedattable.8 Andwhenthedisciplessawit,theywereindignant,saying,“Whythiswaste?9 Forthiscouldhavebeensoldforalargesumand^xgiventothepoor.”10 But^yJesus,awareofthis,saidtothem,“Whydoyoutroublethewoman?Forshehasdoneabeautifulthingtome.11 For^zyoualwayshavethepoorwithyou,but^ayouwillnotalwayshaveme.12 Inpouringthisointmentonmybody,shehasdoneit^btopreparemeforburial.13 Truly,Isaytoyou,wherever^cthisgospelisproclaimedinthewholeworld,whatshehasdonewillalsobetold^dinmemoryofher.”

Judas to Betray Jesus

14 ^eThenoneofthetwelve,whosenamewas^fJudasIscariot,wenttothechiefpriests15 andsaid,“WhatwillyougivemeifIdeliverhimovertoyou?”Andthey^gpaidhim^hthirtypiecesofsilver.16 Andfromthatmomenthesoughtanopportunityⁱtobetrayhim.

The Passover with the Disciples

17 ^jNowon^kthefirstdayofUnleavenedBreadthedisciplescametoJesus,saying,“WherewillyouhaveusprepareforyoutoeatthePassover?”18 Hesaid,“Gointothecitytoacertainmanandsaytohim,^l‘TheTeachersays,^mMytimeisathand.IwillkeepthePassoveratyourhousewithmydisciples.’”19 AndthedisciplesdidasJesushaddirectedthem,andtheypreparedthePassover.

20 ⁿWhenitwasevening,hereclinedattablewiththetwelve.²21 Andastheywereeating,^ohesaid,“Truly,Isaytoyou,oneofyouwillbetrayme.”22 Andtheywereverysorrowfulandbegantosaytohimoneafteranother,“IsitI,Lord?”23 Heanswered,^p“Hewhohasdippedhishandinthedishwithmewillbetrayme.24 TheSonofMangoes^qasitiswrittenofhim,but^rwoetothatmanbywhomtheSonofManisbetrayed!^sItwouldhavebeenbetterforthatmanifhehadnotbeenborn.”25 Judas,whowouldbetrayhim,answered,“IsitI,^tRabbi?”Hesaidtohim,^u“Youhavesaidso.”

Institution of the Lord’s Supper

26 ^vNowastheywereeating,Jesustookbread,and^wafterblessingitbrokeitandgaveittothedisciples,andsaid,“Take,eat;^xthisismybody.”27 Andhetookacup,andwhenhe^yhadgiventhankshegaveittothem,saying,“Drinkofit,allofyou,28 for^xthisismy^zbloodofthe³covenant,whichispouredoutfor^amany^bfortheforgivenessofsins.29 ItellyouIwillnotdrinkagainofthisfruitofthevineuntilthatdaywhenIdrinkitnewwithyou^cinmyFather’skingdom.”

Jesus Foretells Peter’s Denial

30 ^dAndwhentheyhadsungahymn,^etheywentoutto^ftheMountofOlives.31 ThenJesussaidtothem,“Youwillallfallawaybecauseofmethisnight.Foritiswritten,‘Iwill^gstriketheshepherd,andthesheepoftheflockwillbescattered.’32 ButafterIamraisedup,^hIwillgobeforeyoutoGalilee.”33 ⁱPeteransweredhim,“Thoughtheyallfallawaybecauseofyou,Iwillneverfallaway.”34 ^jJesussaidtohim,“Truly,Itellyou,thisverynight,^kbeforetheroostercrows,youwilldenymethreetimes.”35 ^lPetersaidtohim,“EvenifImustdiewithyou,Iwillnotdenyyou!”Andallthedisciplessaidthesame.

Jesus Prays in Gethsemane

36 ^mThenJesuswentwiththem^etoaplacecalledGethsemane,andhesaidtohisdisciples,“Sithere,whileIgooverthereandpray.”37 AndtakingwithhimⁿPeterand^othetwosonsofZebedee,hebegantobesorrowfulandtroubled.38 Thenhesaidtothem,^p“Mysoulisverysorrowful,eventodeath;remainhere,and^qwatch⁴withme.”39 Andgoingalittlefartherhefellonhisface^randprayed,saying,“MyFather,ifitbepossible,let^sthiscuppassfromme;^tnevertheless,notasIwill,butasyouwill.”40 Andhecametothedisciplesandfoundthemsleeping.AndhesaidtoPeter,“So,couldyounotwatchwithmeonehour?41 ^qWatchand^upraythatyou^vmaynotenterintotemptation.Thespiritindeediswilling,butthefleshisweak.”42 Again,forthesecondtime,hewentawayandprayed,“MyFather,ifthiscannotpassunlessIdrinkit,^wyourwillbedone.”43 Andagainhecameandfoundthemsleeping,for^xtheireyeswereheavy.44 So,leavingthemagain,hewentawayandprayedfor^ythethirdtime,sayingthesamewordsagain.45 Thenhecametothedisciplesandsaidtothem,“Sleepandtakeyourrestlateron.⁵See,^zthehourisathand,and^atheSonofManisbetrayedintothehandsofsinners.46 Rise,letusbegoing;see,mybetrayerisathand.”

Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus

47 ^bWhilehewasstillspeaking,^cJudascame,oneofthetwelve,andwithhimagreatcrowdwithswordsandclubs,fromthechiefpriestsandtheeldersofthepeople.48 Nowthebetrayerhadgiventhemasign,saying,“TheoneIwillkissistheman;seizehim.”49 AndhecameuptoJesusatonceandsaid,“Greetings,^dRabbi!”Andhekissedhim.50 Jesussaidtohim,^e“Friend,^fdowhatyoucametodo.”⁶ThentheycameupandlaidhandsonJesusandseizedhim.51 Andbehold,oneofthosewhowerewithJesusstretchedouthishandanddrewhis^gswordandstrucktheservant⁷ofthehighpriestandcutoffhisear.52 ThenJesussaidtohim,“Putyourswordbackintoitsplace.For^hallwhotaketheswordwillperishbythesword.53 ⁱDoyouthinkthatIcannotappealtomyFather,andhewillatoncesendme^jmorethantwelve^klegionsofangels?54 ^lButhowthenshouldtheScripturesbefulfilled,thatitmustbeso?”55 AtthathourJesussaidtothecrowds,“Haveyoucomeoutasagainstarobber,withswordsandclubstocaptureme?Dayafterday^mIsatinthetempleⁿteaching,andyoudidnotseizeme.56 But^lallthishastakenplacethattheScripturesoftheprophetsmightbefulfilled.”^oThenallthediscipleslefthimandfled.

Jesus Before Caiaphas and the Council

57 ^pThen^qthosewhohadseizedJesusledhimto^rCaiaphasthehighpriest,wherethescribesandtheeldershadgathered.58 And^sPeterwasfollowinghimatadistance,asfaras^rthecourtyardofthehighpriest,andgoinginsidehesatwith^ttheguardstoseetheend.59 Nowthechiefpriestsandthewholecouncil^8uwereseekingfalsetestimonyagainstJesusthattheymightputhimtodeath,60 buttheyfoundnone,^vthoughmanyfalsewitnessescameforward.Atlast^wtwocameforward61 andsaid,“Thismansaid,^x‘Iamableto^ydestroythetempleofGod,andtorebuilditinthreedays.’”62 Andthehighprieststoodupandsaid,“Haveyounoanswertomake?Whatisitthatthesementestifyagainstyou?”⁹63 ^zButJesusremainedsilent.^aAndthehighpriestsaidtohim,^b“Iadjureyouby^cthelivingGod,^dtellusifyouare^etheChrist,^ftheSonofGod.”64 Jesussaidtohim,^g“Youhavesaidso.ButItellyou,fromnowon^hyouwillseetheSonofManⁱseatedattherighthandofPowerand^hcomingonthecloudsofheaven.”65 Thenthehighpriest^jtorehisrobesandsaid,^k“Hehasutteredblasphemy.Whatfurtherwitnessesdoweneed?Youhavenowheardhisblasphemy.66 Whatisyourjudgment?”Theyanswered,^l“Hedeservesdeath.”67 Then^mtheyspitinhisfaceⁿand^ostruckhim.Andsomeslappedhim,68 saying,“Prophesytous,you^pChrist!Whoisitthatstruckyou?”

Peter Denies Jesus

69 ^qNowPeterwassittingoutside^rinthecourtyard.Andaservantgirlcameuptohimandsaid,“YoualsowerewithJesustheGalilean.”70 Buthedenieditbeforethemall,saying,“Idonotknowwhatyoumean.”71 Andwhenhewentouttotheentrance,anotherservantgirlsawhim,andshesaidtothebystanders,“ThismanwaswithJesus^sofNazareth.”72 Andagainhedenieditwithanoath:“Idonotknowtheman.”73 AfteralittlewhilethebystanderscameupandsaidtoPeter,“Certainlyyoutooareoneofthem,for^tyouraccentbetraysyou.”74 Thenhebegantoinvokeacurseonhimselfandtoswear,“Idonotknowtheman.”Andimmediatelytheroostercrowed.75 AndPeterrememberedthesayingofJesus,^u“Beforetheroostercrows,youwill^vdenymethreetimes.”Andhewentoutandweptbitterly.

Jesus Delivered to Pilate

27 ^wWhenmorningcame,allthechiefpriestsandtheeldersofthepeople^xtookcounselagainstJesustoputhimtodeath.2 Andtheyboundhimand^yledhimawayand^zdeliveredhimoverto^aPilatethegovernor.

Judas Hangs Himself

3 Thenwhen^bJudas,hisbetrayer,sawthatJesus¹wascondemned,^chechangedhismindandbroughtback^dthethirtypiecesofsilvertothechiefpriestsandtheelders,4 saying,“Ihavesinnedbybetrayinginnocentblood.”Theysaid,“Whatisthattous?^eSeetoityourself.”5 Andthrowingdownthepiecesofsilverintothetemple,^fhedeparted,andhewentandhangedhimself.6 Butthechiefpriests,takingthepiecesofsilver,said,“Itisnotlawfultoputtheminto^gthetreasury,sinceitisbloodmoney.”7 Sotheytookcounselandboughtwiththemthepotter’sfieldasaburialplaceforstrangers.8 Therefore^hthatfieldhasbeencalledtheFieldofBloodⁱtothisday.9 ^jThenwasfulfilledwhathadbeenspokenbytheprophetJeremiah,saying,^k“Andtheytookthethirtypiecesofsilver,thepriceofhimonwhomapricehadbeensetbysomeofthesonsofIsrael,10 andtheygavethemforthepotter’sfield,astheLorddirectedme.”

Jesus Before Pilate

11 ^lNowJesusstoodbeforethegovernor,andthegovernoraskedhim,“Areyou^mtheKingoftheJews?”Jesussaid,ⁿ“Youhavesaidso.”12 ^oButwhenhewasaccusedbythechiefpriestsandelders,hegavenoanswer.13 ThenPilatesaidtohim,^p“Doyounothearhowmanythingstheytestifyagainstyou?”14 Buthegavehimnoanswer,noteventoasinglecharge,sothatthegovernorwasgreatlyamazed.

The Crowd Chooses Barabbas

15 ^qNowatthefeastthegovernorwasaccustomedtoreleaseforthecrowdanyoneprisonerwhomtheywanted.16 AndtheyhadthenanotoriousprisonercalledBarabbas.17 Sowhentheyhadgathered,Pilatesaidtothem,“Whomdoyouwantmetoreleaseforyou:Barabbas,or^rJesuswhoiscalledChrist?”18 Forheknewthatitwasout^sofenvythattheyhaddeliveredhimup.19 Besides,whilehewassittingon^tthejudgmentseat,hiswifesentwordtohim,“Havenothingtodowith^uthatrighteousman,forIhavesufferedmuchbecauseofhimtoday^vinadream.”20 Nowthechiefpriestsandtheelderspersuadedthecrowdto^waskforBarabbasanddestroyJesus.21 Thegovernoragainsaidtothem,“Whichofthetwodoyouwantmetoreleaseforyou?”Andtheysaid,“Barabbas.”22 Pilatesaidtothem,“ThenwhatshallIdowithJesuswhoiscalledChrist?”^xTheyallsaid,“Lethimbecrucified!”23 Andhesaid,“Why?^yWhatevilhashedone?”Buttheyshoutedallthemore,“Lethimbecrucified!”

Pilate Delivers Jesus to Be Crucified

24 SowhenPilatesawthathewasgainingnothing,butratherthat^zariotwasbeginning,hetookwaterand^awashedhishandsbeforethecrowd,saying,“Iaminnocentof^bthisman’sblood;^2cseetoityourselves.”25 Andallthepeopleanswered,^d“Hisbloodbeonusand^eonourchildren!”26 ThenhereleasedforthemBarabbas,andhaving^fscourged³Jesus,deliveredhimtobecrucified.

Jesus Is Mocked

27 ^gThenthesoldiersofthegovernortookJesusintothe^hgovernor’sheadquarters,⁴andtheygatheredthewholeⁱbattalion⁵beforehim.28 Andtheystrippedhimandput^jascarletrobeonhim,29 andtwistingtogetheracrownofthorns,theyputitonhisheadandputareedinhisrighthand.Andkneelingbeforehim,they^kmockedhim,saying,“Hail,^lKingoftheJews!”30 And^mtheyspitonhimandtookthereedandstruckhimonthehead.31 Andwhentheyhadmockedhim,theystrippedhimoftherobeandputhisownclothesonhimandⁿledhimawaytocrucifyhim.

The Crucifixion

32 ^opAstheywentout,theyfoundamanofCyrene,Simonbyname.Theycompelledthismanto^ocarryhiscross.33 ^qAndwhentheycametoaplacecalledGolgotha(whichmeansPlaceofaSkull),34 ^rtheyofferedhimwinetodrink,mixedwith^sgall,butwhenhetastedit,hewouldnotdrinkit.35 Andwhentheyhadcrucifiedhim,^ttheydividedhisgarmentsamongthembycastinglots.36 Thentheysatdownand^ukeptwatchoverhimthere.37 Andoverhisheadtheyputthechargeagainsthim,whichread,“ThisisJesus,^vtheKingoftheJews.”38 Thentwo^wrobberswerecrucifiedwithhim,^xoneontherightandoneontheleft.39 And^ythosewhopassedby^zderidedhim,^awaggingtheirheads40 andsaying,^b“Youwhowoulddestroythetempleandrebuilditinthreedays,saveyourself!^cIfyouare^dtheSonofGod,comedownfromthecross.”41 Soalsothechiefpriests,withthescribesandelders,mockedhim,saying,42 ^e“Hesavedothers;^fhecannotsavehimself.^gHeistheKingofIsrael;lethimcomedownnowfromthecross,andwewillbelieveinhim.43 ^hHetrustsinGod;letGoddeliverhimnow,ifhedesireshim.Forhesaid,‘IamtheSonofGod.’”44 ⁱAndtherobberswhowerecrucifiedwithhimalsoreviledhiminthesameway.

The Death of Jesus

45 Nowfromthesixthhour⁶therewasdarknessoveralltheland⁷untiltheninthhour.⁸46 AndabouttheninthhourJesus^jcriedoutwithaloudvoice,saying,^k“Eli,Eli,lemasabachthani?”thatis,“MyGod,myGod,whyhaveyouforsakenme?”47 Andsomeofthebystanders,hearingit,said,“ThismaniscallingElijah.”48 Andoneofthematonceranandtookasponge,filleditwith^lsourwine,andputitonareedand^mgaveittohimtodrink.49 Buttheotherssaid,“Wait,letusseewhetherElijahwillcometosavehim.”50 AndJesusⁿcriedoutagainwithaloudvoiceand^oyieldeduphisspirit.

51 Andbehold,^pthecurtainofthetemplewastornintwo,fromtoptobottom.And^qtheearthshook,andtherocksweresplit.52 Thetombsalsowereopened.Andmanybodiesof^rthesaints^swhohadfallenasleepwereraised,53 andcomingoutofthetombsafterhisresurrectiontheywentinto^ttheholycityandappearedtomany.54 ^uWhenthecenturionandthosewhowerewithhim,^vkeepingwatchoverJesus,sawtheearthquakeandwhattookplace,theywerefilledwithaweandsaid,^w“TrulythiswastheSon⁹ofGod!”

55 Therewerealso^xmanywomenthere,lookingon^yfromadistance,whohadfollowedJesusfromGalilee,^zministeringtohim,56 amongwhomwere^zMaryMagdaleneandMarythemotherofJamesandJosephand^athemotherofthesonsofZebedee.

Jesus Is Buried

57 ^bWhenitwasevening,therecamearichmanfromArimathea,namedJoseph,whoalsowasadiscipleofJesus.58 HewenttoPilateandaskedforthebodyofJesus.ThenPilateorderedittobegiventohim.59 AndJosephtookthebodyandwrappeditinacleanlinenshroud60 and^claiditinhisownnewtomb,^dwhichhehadcutintherock.Andherolled^eagreatstonetotheentranceofthetombandwentaway.61 MaryMagdaleneand^ftheotherMarywerethere,sittingoppositethetomb.

The Guard at the Tomb

62 Thenextday,thatis,afterthedayof^gPreparation,thechiefpriestsandthePhariseesgatheredbeforePilate63 andsaid,“Sir,werememberhow^hthatimpostorsaid,whilehewasstillalive,ⁱ‘AfterthreedaysIwillrise.’64 Thereforeorderthetombtobemadesecureuntilthethirdday,^jlesthisdisciplesgoandstealhimawayandtellthepeople,‘Hehasrisenfromthedead,’andthelastfraudwillbeworsethanthefirst.”65 Pilatesaidtothem,“Youhave^kaguard¹⁰ofsoldiers.Go,makeitassecureasyoucan.”66 Sotheywentandmadethetombsecureby^lsealingthestoneandsettingaguard.

The Resurrection

28 ^mNowaftertheSabbath,towardthedawnofthefirstdayoftheweek,MaryMagdaleneandⁿtheotherMarywenttoseethetomb.2 Andbehold,therewasagreatearthquake,for^oanangeloftheLorddescendedfromheavenandcameandrolledbackthestoneandsatonit.3 ^pHisappearancewaslikelightning,and^qhisclothingwhiteassnow.4 Andforfearofhimtheguardstrembledand^rbecamelikedeadmen.5 Buttheangelsaidtothewomen,“Donotbeafraid,forIknowthatyouseekJesuswhowascrucified.6 Heisnothere,forhehasrisen,^sashesaid.Come,seetheplacewherehe¹lay.7 Thengoquicklyandtellhisdisciplesthathehasrisenfromthedead,andbehold,^theisgoingbeforeyoutoGalilee;thereyouwillseehim.See,Ihavetoldyou.”8 Sotheydepartedquicklyfromthetomb^uwithfearandgreatjoy,andrantotellhisdisciples.9 Andbehold,Jesus^vmetthemandsaid,“Greetings!”Andtheycameupand^wtookholdofhisfeetand^xworshipedhim.10 ThenJesussaidtothem,“Donotbeafraid;^ygoandtell^zmybrotherstogotoGalilee,andtheretheywillseeme.”

The Report of the Guard

11 Whiletheyweregoing,behold,someof^atheguardwentintothecityandtoldthechiefpriestsallthathadtakenplace.12 Andwhentheyhadassembledwiththeeldersandtakencounsel,theygaveasufficientsumofmoneytothesoldiers13 andsaid,“Tellpeople,^b‘Hisdisciplescamebynightandstolehimawaywhilewewereasleep.’14 Andifthiscomesto^cthegovernor’sears,wewill^dsatisfyhimandkeepyououtoftrouble.”15 Sotheytookthemoneyanddidastheyweredirected.AndthisstoryhasbeenspreadamongtheJews^etothisday.

The Great Commission

16 Nowtheelevendisciples^fwenttoGalilee,tothemountaintowhichJesushaddirectedthem.17 Andwhentheysawhimthey^gworshipedhim,butsomedoubted.18 AndJesuscameandsaidtothem,^h“Allauthorityⁱinheavenandonearthhasbeengiventome.19 ^jGothereforeand^kmakedisciplesof^lallnations,^jbaptizingthem^min²ⁿthenameoftheFatherandoftheSonandoftheHolySpirit,20 teachingthem^otoobserveallthat^pIhavecommandedyou.Andbehold,^qIamwithyoualways,to^rtheendoftheage.”
