22 AndagainJesus^ospoketotheminparables,saying,2 ^p“Thekingdomofheavenmaybecomparedtoakingwhogave^qaweddingfeastforhisson,3 and^rsenthisservants¹tocallthosewhowereinvitedtotheweddingfeast,buttheywouldnotcome.4 ^sAgainhesentotherservants,saying,‘Tellthosewhoareinvited,“See,Ihavepreparedmy^tdinner,^umyoxenandmyfatcalveshavebeenslaughtered,andeverythingisready.Cometotheweddingfeast.”’5 But^vtheypaidnoattentionandwentoff,onetohisfarm,anothertohisbusiness,6 whiletherestseizedhisservants,^wtreatedthemshamefully,and^xkilledthem.7 Thekingwasangry,andhesenthistroopsand^ydestroyedthosemurderersandburnedtheircity.8 Thenhesaidtohisservants,‘Theweddingfeastisready,butthoseinvitedwerenot^zworthy.9 Gothereforetothemainroadsandinvitetotheweddingfeastasmanyasyoufind.’10 Andthoseservantswentoutintotheroadsand^bgatheredallwhomtheyfound,bothbadandgood.Sotheweddinghallwasfilledwithguests.

11 “Butwhenthekingcameintolookattheguests,hesawthere^camanwhohadnoweddinggarment.12 Andhesaidtohim,^d‘Friend,howdidyougetinherewithoutaweddinggarment?’Andhewasspeechless.13 Thenthekingsaidtotheattendants,‘Bindhimhandandfootand^ecasthimintotheouterdarkness.Inthatplace^etherewillbeweepingandgnashingofteeth.’14 Formanyare^fcalled,butfeware^fchosen.”

Paying Taxes to Caesar

15 ^gThenthePhariseeswentandplottedhow^htoentanglehiminhiswords.16 Andtheysentⁱtheirdisciplestohim,alongwith^jtheHerodians,saying,“Teacher,^kweknowthatyouaretrueandteach^lthewayofGodtruthfully,andyoudonotcareaboutanyone’sopinion,for^myouarenotswayedbyappearances.²17 Tellus,then,whatyouthink.Isitlawfultopayⁿtaxesto^oCaesar,ornot?”18 ButJesus,awareoftheirmalice,said,“Why^pputmetothetest,youhypocrites?19 Showmethecoinforthetax.”Andtheybroughthimadenarius.³20 AndJesussaidtothem,“Whoselikenessandinscriptionisthis?”21 Theysaid,“Caesar’s.”Thenhesaidtothem,^q“ThereforerendertoCaesarthethingsthatareCaesar’s,andtoGodthethingsthatareGod’s.”22 Whentheyheardit,theymarveled.Andthey^rlefthimandwentaway.

Sadducees Ask About the Resurrection

23 Thesameday^sSadduceescametohim,^twhosaythatthereisnoresurrection,andtheyaskedhimaquestion,24 saying,“Teacher,Mosessaid,^u‘Ifamandieshavingnochildren,hisbrothermustmarrythewidowandraiseupoffspringforhisbrother.’25 Nowthereweresevenbrothersamongus.Thefirstmarriedanddied,andhavingnooffspringlefthiswifetohisbrother.26 Sotoothesecondandthird,downtotheseventh.27 Afterthemall,thewomandied.28 Intheresurrection,therefore,oftheseven,whosewifewillshebe?Fortheyallhadher.”

29 ButJesusansweredthem,“Youarewrong,^vbecauseyouknowneithertheScripturesnor^wthepowerofGod.30 Forintheresurrectiontheyneither^xmarrynor^xaregiveninmarriage,butarelikeangelsinheaven.31 Andasfortheresurrectionofthedead,^yhaveyounotreadwhatwassaidtoyoubyGod:32 ^z‘IamtheGodofAbraham,andtheGodofIsaac,andtheGodofJacob’?HeisnotGodofthedead,butoftheliving.”33 Andwhenthecrowdheardit,^atheywereastonishedathisteaching.

The Great Commandment

34 ^bButwhenthePhariseesheardthathehadsilenced^ctheSadducees,theygatheredtogether.35 ^dAndoneofthem,^ealawyer,askedhimaquestion^ftotesthim.36 “Teacher,whichisthegreatcommandmentintheLaw?”37 Andhesaidtohim,^g“YoushalllovetheLordyourGodwithallyourheartandwithallyoursoulandwithallyourmind.38 Thisisthegreatandfirstcommandment.39 And^hasecondislikeit:ⁱYoushallloveyourneighborasyourself.40 ^jOnthesetwocommandmentsdepend^kalltheLawandtheProphets.”

Whose Son Is the Christ?

41 ^lNowwhilethePharisees^mweregatheredtogether,Jesusaskedthemaquestion,42 saying,“WhatdoyouthinkaboutⁿtheChrist?Whosesonishe?”Theysaidtohim,ⁿ“ThesonofDavid.”43 Hesaidtothem,“HowisitthenthatDavid,^ointheSpirit,callshimLord,saying,

45 IfthenDavidcallshimLord,^qhowishehisson?”46 ^rAndnoonewasabletoanswerhimaword,^snorfromthatdaydidanyonedaretoaskhimanymorequestions.

Seven Woes to the Scribes and Pharisees

23 ThenJesus^tsaidtothecrowdsandtohisdisciples,2 ^u“ThescribesandthePharisees^vsitonMoses’seat,3 sodoandobservewhatevertheytellyou,^wbutnottheworkstheydo.^xFortheypreach,butdonotpractice.4 ^yTheytieupheavyburdens,hardtobear,¹andlaythemonpeople’sshoulders,buttheythemselvesarenotwillingtomovethemwiththeirfinger.5 ^tTheydoalltheirdeeds^ztobeseenbyothers.Fortheymake^atheirphylacteriesbroadand^btheirfringeslong,6 andthey^clovetheplaceofhonoratfeastsand^dthebestseatsinthesynagogues7 and^dgreetingsin^ethemarketplacesandbeingcalled^frabbi²byothers.8 ^gButyouarenottobecalledrabbi,foryouhaveoneteacher,andyouare^hallbrothers.³9 ⁱAndcallnomanyourfatheronearth,for^jyouhaveoneFather,whoisinheaven.10 Neitherbecalledinstructors,foryouhaveoneinstructor,^ktheChrist.11 ^lThegreatestamongyoushallbeyourservant.12 ^mWhoeverexaltshimselfwillbehumbled,andwhoeverhumbleshimselfwillbeexalted.

13 “Butwoeⁿtoyou,scribesandPharisees,hypocrites!Foryou^oshutthekingdomofheaveninpeople’sfaces.Foryou^pneitherenteryourselvesnorallowthosewhowouldentertogoin.⁴15 Woetoyou,scribesandPharisees,hypocrites!Foryoutravelacrossseaandlandtomakeasingle^qproselyte,andwhenhebecomesaproselyte,youmakehimtwiceasmucha^rchildof^shell⁵asyourselves.

16 “Woeto^tyou,^ublindguides,whosay,^v‘Ifanyoneswearsbythetemple,itisnothing,butifanyoneswearsbythegoldofthetemple,heisboundbyhisoath.’17 Youblindfools!Forwhichisgreater,thegoldor^wthetemplethathasmadethegoldsacred?18 Andyousay,‘Ifanyoneswearsbythealtar,itisnothing,butifanyoneswearsby^xthegiftthatisonthealtar,heisboundbyhisoath.’19 Youblindmen!Forwhichisgreater,thegiftor^ythealtarthatmakesthegiftsacred?20 Sowhoeverswearsbythealtarswearsbyitandbyeverythingonit.21 Andwhoeverswearsbythetempleswearsbyitandby^zhimwhodwellsinit.22 Andwhoeverswearsby^aheavenswearsby^bthethroneofGodandby^chimwhositsuponit.

23 ^d“Woetoyou,scribesandPharisees,hypocrites!For^eyoutithemintanddilland^fcumin,andhaveneglectedtheweightiermattersofthelaw:^gjusticeandmercyandfaithfulness.^hTheseyououghttohavedone,withoutneglectingtheothers.24 Youblindguides,strainingoutagnatandswallowingⁱacamel!

25 ^j“Woetoyou,scribesandPharisees,hypocrites!For^kyoucleantheoutsideof^lthecupandtheplate,butinsidetheyarefullof^mgreedandself-indulgence.26 YoublindPharisee!Firstcleantheinsideof^lthecupandtheplate,thattheoutsidealsomaybeclean.

27 ⁿ“Woetoyou,scribesandPharisees,hypocrites!Foryouarelike^owhitewashedtombs,whichoutwardlyappearbeautiful,butwithinarefullofdeadpeople’sbonesand^palluncleanness.28 Soyoualso^qoutwardlyappearrighteoustoothers,butwithinyouarefullof^rhypocrisyandlawlessness.

29 ^s“Woetoyou,scribesandPharisees,hypocrites!Foryoubuildthetombsoftheprophetsanddecoratethemonumentsoftherighteous,30 saying,‘Ifwehadlivedinthedaysofourfathers,wewouldnothavetakenpartwiththeminsheddingthebloodoftheprophets.’31 Thusyouwitnessagainstyourselvesthatyouare^tsonsofthosewhomurderedtheprophets.32 ^uFillup,then,themeasureofyourfathers.33 Youserpents,^vyoubroodofvipers,howareyoutoescapebeingsentencedto^whell?34 ^xTherefore^yIsendyou^zprophetsandwisemenand^ascribes,^bsomeofwhomyouwillkillandcrucify,and^bsomeyouwill^cfloginyoursynagoguesand^dpersecutefromtowntotown,35 sothatonyoumaycomeall^etherighteousbloodshedonearth,fromthebloodofrighteous^fAbeltothebloodof^gZechariahthesonofBarachiah,⁶whomyoumurderedbetween^hthesanctuaryandⁱthealtar.36 Truly,Isaytoyou,^jallthesethingswillcomeuponthisgeneration.

Lament over Jerusalem

37 ^k“OJerusalem,Jerusalem,thecitythat^lkillstheprophetsandstonesthosewhoaresenttoit!HowoftenwouldIhave^mgatheredⁿyourchildrentogether^oasahengathersherbrood^punderherwings,and^qyouwerenotwilling!38 See,^ryourhouseislefttoyoudesolate.39 ForItellyou,youwillnotseemeagain,untilyousay,^s‘BlessedishewhocomesinthenameoftheLord.’”

Jesus Foretells Destruction of the Temple

24 ^tJesusleftthetempleandwasgoingaway,whenhisdisciplescametopointouttohimthebuildingsofthetemple.2 Butheansweredthem,“Youseeallthese,doyounot?Truly,Isaytoyou,^utherewillnotbelefthereonestoneuponanotherthatwillnotbethrowndown.”

Signs of the End of the Age

3 Ashesaton^vtheMountofOlives,thedisciplescametohim^wprivately,saying,“Tellus,^xwhenwillthesethingsbe,andwhatwillbethesignofyour^ycomingandof^ztheendoftheage?”4 AndJesusansweredthem,^a“Seethatnooneleadsyouastray.5 For^bmanywillcomeinmyname,saying,‘Iam^ctheChrist,’andtheywillleadmanyastray.6 Andyouwillhearofwarsandrumorsofwars.Seethatyou^darenotalarmed,forthis^emusttakeplace,buttheendisnotyet.7 For^fnationwillriseagainstnation,and^gkingdomagainstkingdom,andtherewillbe^hfaminesandearthquakesinvariousplaces.8 Allthesearebutthebeginningofⁱthebirthpains.

9 “Then^jtheywilldeliveryouup^ktotribulationand^lputyoutodeath,and^myouwillbehatedbyallnationsformyname’ssake.10 Andthenmanywillfallaway¹andⁿbetrayoneanotherandhateoneanother.11 Andmany^ofalseprophetswillarise^pandleadmanyastray.12 Andbecauselawlessnesswillbeincreased,^qtheloveofmanywillgrowcold.13 ^rButtheonewhoendurestotheendwillbesaved.14 Andthisgospelofthekingdom^swillbeproclaimedthroughoutthewholeworld^tasatestimony^utoallnations,and^vthentheendwillcome.

The Abomination of Desolation

15 “Sowhenyouseetheabominationofdesolation^wspokenofbytheprophetDaniel,standingin^xtheholyplace(^yletthereaderunderstand),16 thenletthosewhoareinJudeafleetothemountains.17 ^zLettheonewhoison^athehousetopnotgodowntotakewhatisinhishouse,18 andlettheonewhoisinthefieldnotturnbacktotakehiscloak.19 And^balasforwomenwhoarepregnantandforthosewhoarenursinginfantsinthosedays!20 PraythatyourflightmaynotbeinwinteroronaSabbath.21 Forthentherewillbe^cgreattribulation,^dsuchashasnotbeenfromthebeginningoftheworlduntilnow,no,andneverwillbe.22 Andifthosedayshadnotbeencutshort,nohumanbeingwouldbesaved.Butfor^ethesakeoftheelectthosedayswillbecutshort.23 ^fThenifanyonesaystoyou,‘Look,hereistheChrist!’or‘Thereheis!’donotbelieveit.24 For^gfalsechristsand^hfalseprophetswillariseandⁱperformgreatsignsandwonders,^hsoastoleadastray,ifpossible,eventheelect.25 See,^jIhavetoldyoubeforehand.26 So,iftheysaytoyou,‘Look,^kheisinthewilderness,’donotgoout.Iftheysay,‘Look,heisintheinnerrooms,’donotbelieveit.27 ^lForasthelightningcomesfromtheeastandshinesasfarasthewest,sowillbe^mthecomingoftheSonofMan.28 ⁿWhereverthecorpseis,therethevultureswillgather.

The Coming of the Son of Man

29 “Immediatelyafter^othetribulationofthosedays^pthesunwillbedarkened,andthemoonwillnotgiveitslight,and^qthestarswillfallfromheaven,andthepowersoftheheavenswillbeshaken.30 Then^rwillappearinheaven^sthesignoftheSonofMan,andthen^tallthetribesoftheearthwillmourn,and^utheywillseetheSonofMancomingonthecloudsofheaven^vwithpowerandgreatglory.31 And^whewillsendouthisangelswithaloud^xtrumpetcall,andtheywill^ygather^zhiselectfrom^athefourwinds,^bfromoneendofheaventotheother.

The Lesson of the Fig Tree

32 “Fromthefigtreelearnitslesson:assoonasitsbranchbecomestenderandputsoutitsleaves,youknowthatsummerisnear.33 Soalso,whenyouseeallthesethings,youknowthatheisnear,^cattheverygates.34 ^dTruly,Isaytoyou,thisgenerationwillnotpassawayuntilallthesethingstakeplace.35 ^eHeavenandearthwillpassaway,but^fmywordswillnotpassaway.

No One Knows That Day and Hour

36 “Butconcerningthatdayandhour^gnooneknows,noteventheangelsofheaven,^hnortheSon,²ⁱbuttheFatheronly.37 ^jForaswerethedaysofNoah,^ksowillbethecomingoftheSonofMan.38 ^jForasinthosedaysbeforethefloodtheywereeatinganddrinking,^lmarryingandgivinginmarriage,until^mthedaywhenNoahenteredtheark,39 andtheywereunawareuntilthefloodcameandsweptthemallaway,^ksowillbethecomingoftheSonofMan.40 Thentwomenwillbeinthefield;onewillbetakenandoneleft.41 ⁿTwowomenwillbegrinding^oatthemill;onewillbetakenandoneleft.42 Therefore,^pstayawake,foryoudonotknowonwhatday^qyourLordiscoming.43 ^rButknowthis,thatifthemasterofthehousehadknowninwhatpartofthenight^sthethiefwascoming,hewouldhavestayedawakeandwouldnothavelethishousebebrokeninto.44 Thereforeyoualsomustbe^tready,for^utheSonofManiscomingatanhouryoudonotexpect.

45 “Whothenis^vthefaithfuland^wwiseservant,³whomhismasterhassetoverhishousehold,togivethemtheirfoodatthepropertime?46 ^xBlessedisthatservantwhomhismasterwillfindsodoingwhenhecomes.47 Truly,Isaytoyou,^yhewillsethimoverallhispossessions.48 Butifthatwickedservantsaystohimself,‘Mymaster^zisdelayed,’49 andbeginstobeathisfellowservants⁴andeatsanddrinkswith^adrunkards,50 themasterofthatservantwillcome^bonadaywhenhedoesnotexpecthimandatanhourhedoesnotknow51 andwillcuthiminpiecesandputhimwiththehypocrites.Inthatplace^ctherewillbeweepingandgnashingofteeth.

The Parable of the Ten Virgins

25 “Thenthekingdomofheavenwillbelike^dtenvirginswhotooktheirlamps¹andwenttomeet^ethebridegroom.²2 Fiveofthemwerefoolish,andfivewere^wwise.3 Forwhenthefoolishtooktheirlamps,theytooknooilwiththem,4 butthewisetookflasksofoilwiththeirlamps.5 Asthebridegroom^fwasdelayed,theyallbecamedrowsyandslept.6 But^gatmidnighttherewasacry,‘Hereisthebridegroom!Comeouttomeethim.’7 Thenallthosevirginsroseand^htrimmedtheirlamps.8 Andthefoolishsaidtothewise,‘Giveussomeofyouroil,forourlampsaregoingout.’9 Butthewiseanswered,saying,‘Sincetherewillnotbeenoughforusandforyou,gorathertothedealersandbuyforyourselves.’10 Andwhiletheyweregoingtobuy,thebridegroomcame,andⁱthosewhowerereadywentinwithhimto^jthemarriagefeast,and^kthedoorwasshut.11 Afterwardtheothervirginscamealso,saying,^l‘Lord,lord,opentous.’12 ^lButheanswered,‘Truly,Isaytoyou,^mIdonotknowyou.’13 ⁿWatchtherefore,foryou^oknowneitherthedaynorthehour.

The Parable of the Talents

14 ^p“For^qitwillbelikeaman^rgoingonajourney,whocalledhisservants³andentrustedtothemhisproperty.15 Toonehegavefive^stalents,⁴toanothertwo,toanotherone,^ttoeachaccordingtohisability.Thenhe^rwentaway.16 Hewhohadreceivedthefivetalentswentatonceandtradedwiththem,andhemadefivetalentsmore.17 Soalsohewhohadthetwotalentsmadetwotalentsmore.18 Buthewhohadreceivedtheonetalentwentand^uduginthegroundandhidhismaster’smoney.19 Now^vafteralongtimethemasterofthoseservantscameand^wsettledaccountswiththem.20 Andhewhohadreceivedthefivetalentscameforward,bringingfivetalentsmore,saying,‘Master,youdeliveredtomefivetalents;here,Ihavemadefivetalentsmore.’21 Hismastersaidtohim,‘Welldone,goodand^xfaithfulservant.^5yYouhavebeenfaithfuloveralittle;^zIwillsetyouovermuch.Enterinto^athejoyofyourmaster.’22 Andhealsowhohadthetwotalentscameforward,saying,‘Master,youdeliveredtometwotalents;here,Ihavemadetwotalentsmore.’23 Hismastersaidtohim,‘Welldone,goodandfaithfulservant.Youhavebeenfaithfuloveralittle;Iwillsetyouovermuch.Enterintothejoyofyourmaster.’24 Healsowhohadreceivedtheonetalentcameforward,saying,‘Master,Iknewyoutobe^bahardman,reaping^cwhereyoudidnotsow,andgatheringwhereyouscatterednoseed,25 soIwasafraid,andIwentandhidyourtalentintheground.Here,^dyouhavewhatisyours.’26 Buthismasteransweredhim,‘You^ewickedand^eslothfulservant!YouknewthatIreapwhereIhavenotsownandgatherwhereIscatterednoseed?27 Thenyououghttohaveinvestedmymoneywiththebankers,andatmycomingIshouldhavereceivedwhatwasmyownwithinterest.28 Sotakethetalentfromhimandgiveittohimwhohasthetentalents.29 ^fFortoeveryonewhohaswillmorebegiven,andhewillhaveanabundance.Butfromtheonewhohasnot,evenwhathehaswillbetakenaway.30 And^gcast^htheworthlessservantintotheouterdarkness.Inthatplace^gtherewillbeweepingandgnashingofteeth.’
