14 vAtthattimewHerodthetetrarchheardaboutthefameofJesus,2 andhesaidtohisservants,x“ThisisJohntheBaptist.Hehasbeenraisedfromthedead;thatiswhythesemiraculouspowersareatworkinhim.”3 ForyHerodhadseizedJohnandboundhimandzputhiminprisonforthesakeofHerodias,hisbrotherPhilip’swife,14 becauseJohnhadbeensayingtohim,a“Itisnotlawfulforyoutohaveher.”5 Andthoughhewantedtoputhimtodeath,bhefearedthepeople,becausetheyheldhimtobecaprophet.6 ButwhenHerod’sdbirthdaycame,thedaughterofHerodiasdancedbeforethecompanyandpleasedHerod,7 sothathepromisedwithanoathtogiveherwhatevershemightask.8 Promptedbyhermother,shesaid,“GivemetheheadofJohntheBaptisthereonaplatter.”9 Andthekingwassorry,butbecauseofhisoathsandhisguestshecommandedittobegiven.10 HesentandhadJohnbeheadedintheprison,11 andhisheadwasbroughtonaplatterandgiventothegirl,andshebroughtittohermother.12 Andehisdisciplescameandtookthebodyandburiedit,andtheywentandtoldJesus.

13 NowwhenJesusheardthis,fhewithdrewfromthereinaboattoadesolateplacebyhimself.Butwhenthecrowdsheardit,theyfollowedhimonfootfromthetowns.14 Whenhewentashorehegsawagreatcrowd,andghehadcompassiononthemandhealedtheirsick.15 Nowwhenitwasevening,thedisciplescametohimandsaid,“Thisisadesolateplace,andthedayisnowover;hsendthecrowdsawaytogointothevillagesandbuyfoodforthemselves.”16 ButJesussaid,“Theyneednotgoaway;iyougivethemsomethingtoeat.”17 Theysaidtohim,“Wehaveonlyfiveloaveshereandtwofish.”18 Andhesaid,“Bringthemheretome.”19 Thenheorderedthecrowdstositdownonthegrass,andtakingthefiveloavesandthetwofish,jhelookeduptoheavenandksaidablessing.Thenhebroketheloavesandgavethemtothedisciples,andthedisciplesgavethemtothecrowds.20 Andtheyallateandweresatisfied.Andtheytookuptwelvebasketsfullofthebrokenpiecesleftover.21 Andthosewhoatewereaboutfivethousandmen,besideswomenandchildren.

28 AndPeteransweredhim,“Lord,ifitisyou,commandmetocometoyouonthewater.”29 Hesaid,“Come.”SoPetergotoutoftheboatandrwalkedonthewaterandcametoJesus.30 Butwhenhesawthewind,5hewasafraid,andbeginningtosinkhecriedout,s“Lord,saveme.”31 Jesusimmediatelyreachedouthishandandtookholdofhim,sayingtohim,t“Oyouoflittlefaith,whydidyouudoubt?”32 Andwhentheygotintotheboat,sthewindceased.33 Andvthoseintheboatwworshipedhim,saying,x“TrulyyouareytheSonofGod.”
