14 ^vAtthattime^wHerodthetetrarchheardaboutthefameofJesus,2 andhesaidtohisservants,^x“ThisisJohntheBaptist.Hehasbeenraisedfromthedead;thatiswhythesemiraculouspowersareatworkinhim.”3 For^yHerodhadseizedJohnandboundhimand^zputhiminprisonforthesakeofHerodias,hisbrotherPhilip’swife,¹4 becauseJohnhadbeensayingtohim,^a“Itisnotlawfulforyoutohaveher.”5 Andthoughhewantedtoputhimtodeath,^bhefearedthepeople,becausetheyheldhimtobe^caprophet.6 ButwhenHerod’s^dbirthdaycame,thedaughterofHerodiasdancedbeforethecompanyandpleasedHerod,7 sothathepromisedwithanoathtogiveherwhatevershemightask.8 Promptedbyhermother,shesaid,“GivemetheheadofJohntheBaptisthereonaplatter.”9 Andthekingwassorry,butbecauseofhisoathsandhisguestshecommandedittobegiven.10 HesentandhadJohnbeheadedintheprison,11 andhisheadwasbroughtonaplatterandgiventothegirl,andshebroughtittohermother.12 And^ehisdisciplescameandtookthebodyandburiedit,andtheywentandtoldJesus.

Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand

13 NowwhenJesusheardthis,^fhewithdrewfromthereinaboattoadesolateplacebyhimself.Butwhenthecrowdsheardit,theyfollowedhimonfootfromthetowns.14 Whenhewentashorehe^gsawagreatcrowd,and^ghehadcompassiononthemandhealedtheirsick.15 Nowwhenitwasevening,thedisciplescametohimandsaid,“Thisisadesolateplace,andthedayisnowover;^hsendthecrowdsawaytogointothevillagesandbuyfoodforthemselves.”16 ButJesussaid,“Theyneednotgoaway;ⁱyougivethemsomethingtoeat.”17 Theysaidtohim,“Wehaveonlyfiveloaveshereandtwofish.”18 Andhesaid,“Bringthemheretome.”19 Thenheorderedthecrowdstositdownonthegrass,andtakingthefiveloavesandthetwofish,^jhelookeduptoheavenand^ksaidablessing.Thenhebroketheloavesandgavethemtothedisciples,andthedisciplesgavethemtothecrowds.20 Andtheyallateandweresatisfied.Andtheytookuptwelvebasketsfullofthebrokenpiecesleftover.21 Andthosewhoatewereaboutfivethousandmen,besideswomenandchildren.

Jesus Walks on the Water

22 ^lImmediatelyhe^mmadethedisciplesgetintotheboatandgobeforehimtotheotherside,whilehedismissedthecrowds.23 Andafterhehaddismissedthecrowds,ⁿhewentuponthemountainbyhimselftopray.When^oeveningcame,hewastherealone,24 buttheboatbythistimewasalongway²fromtheland,³beatenbythewaves,forthewindwasagainstthem.25 And^linthefourthwatchofthenight⁴hecametothem,walkingonthesea.26 Butwhenthedisciplessawhimwalkingonthesea,^ptheywereterrified,andsaid,“Itisaghost!”andtheycriedoutinfear.27 ButimmediatelyJesusspoketothem,saying,^q“Takeheart;itisI.^qDonotbeafraid.”

28 AndPeteransweredhim,“Lord,ifitisyou,commandmetocometoyouonthewater.”29 Hesaid,“Come.”SoPetergotoutoftheboatand^rwalkedonthewaterandcametoJesus.30 Butwhenhesawthewind,⁵hewasafraid,andbeginningtosinkhecriedout,^s“Lord,saveme.”31 Jesusimmediatelyreachedouthishandandtookholdofhim,sayingtohim,^t“Oyouoflittlefaith,whydidyou^udoubt?”32 Andwhentheygotintotheboat,^sthewindceased.33 And^vthoseintheboat^wworshipedhim,saying,^x“Trulyyouare^ytheSonofGod.”

34 ^zAndwhentheyhadcrossedover,theycametolandat^aGennesaret.35 Andwhenthemenofthatplacerecognizedhim,theysentaroundtoallthatregionand^bbroughttohimallwhoweresick36 andimploredhimthattheymightonlytouch^cthefringeofhisgarment.And^dasmanyastoucheditweremadewell.

Traditions and Commandments

15 ^eThenPhariseesand^fscribescametoJesus^ffromJerusalemandsaid,2 ^g“Whydoyourdisciplesbreak^hthetraditionoftheelders?^jFortheydonotwashtheirhandswhentheyeat.”3 Heansweredthem,“AndwhydoyoubreakthecommandmentofGodforthesakeofyourtradition?4 ForGodcommanded,^k‘Honoryourfatherandyourmother,’and,^l‘Whoeverrevilesfatherormothermustsurelydie.’5 Butyousay,‘Ifanyonetellshisfatherorhismother,“WhatyouwouldhavegainedfrommeisgiventoGod,”¹6 heneednothonorhisfather.’Soforthesakeofyourtraditionyouhave^mmadevoidtheword²ofGod.7 ⁿYouhypocrites!WelldidIsaiahprophesyofyou,whenhesaid:

10 Andhecalledthepeopletohimandsaidtothem,^q“Hearandunderstand:11 ^ritisnotwhatgoesintothemouththatdefilesaperson,butwhatcomesoutofthemouth;thisdefilesaperson.”12 Thenthedisciplescameandsaidtohim,“DoyouknowthatthePhariseeswere^soffendedwhentheyheardthissaying?”13 Heanswered,^t“EveryplantthatmyheavenlyFatherhasnotplanted^uwillberootedup.14 Letthemalone;^vtheyareblindguides.³And^wiftheblindleadtheblind,bothwillfallintoapit.”15 ButPetersaidtohim,^x“Explaintheparabletous.”16 Andhesaid,^y“Areyoualsostillwithoutunderstanding?17 Doyounotseethat^zwhatevergoesintothemouthpassesintothestomachandisexpelled?⁴18 But^awhatcomesoutofthemouthproceedsfromtheheart,andthisdefilesaperson.19 Foroutoftheheartcome^bevilthoughts,^cmurder,adultery,sexualimmorality,theft,falsewitness,^dslander.20 ^eThesearewhatdefileaperson.But^ftoeatwithunwashedhandsdoesnotdefileanyone.”

21 ^gAndJesuswentawayfromthereandwithdrewtothedistrictofTyreandSidon.22 Andbehold,^haCanaanitewomanfromthatregioncameoutandwascrying,ⁱ“Havemercyonme,OLord,SonofDavid;mydaughterisseverelyoppressedbyademon.”23 Buthedidnotanswerheraword.Andhisdisciplescameandbeggedhim,saying,^j“Sendheraway,forsheiscryingoutafterus.”24 Heanswered,^k“IwassentonlytothelostsheepofthehouseofIsrael.”25 Butshecameand^lkneltbeforehim,saying,“Lord,helpme.”26 Andheanswered,“Itisnotrighttotakethechildren’sbreadand^mthrowittothedogs.”27 Shesaid,“Yes,Lord,yeteventhedogseatⁿthecrumbsthatfallfromtheirmasters’table.”28 ThenJesusansweredher,“Owoman,^ogreatisyourfaith!^pLetitbedoneforyouasyoudesire.”^qAndherdaughterwas^phealedinstantly.⁵

Jesus Heals Many

29 ^rJesuswentonfromthereandwalked^sbesidetheSeaofGalilee.Andhe^twentuponthemountainandsatdownthere.30 Andgreatcrowdscametohim,bringingwiththem^uthelame,theblind,thecrippled,themute,andmanyothers,andtheyputthemathisfeet,andhehealedthem,31 ^vsothatthecrowdwondered,whentheysawthemutespeaking,^wthecrippledhealthy,thelamewalking,andtheblindseeing.And^xtheyglorified^ytheGodofIsrael.

Jesus Feeds the Four Thousand

32 ^zThenJesuscalledhisdisciplestohimandsaid,^a“Ihavecompassiononthecrowdbecausetheyhavebeenwithmenowthreedaysandhavenothingtoeat.AndIamunwillingtosendthemawayhungry,lesttheyfaintontheway.”33 Andthedisciplessaidtohim,“Wherearewetogetenoughbreadinsuchadesolateplacetofeedsogreatacrowd?”34 AndJesussaidtothem,“Howmanyloavesdoyouhave?”Theysaid,^b“Seven,andafewsmallfish.”35 Anddirectingthecrowdtositdownontheground,36 hetookthesevenloavesandthefish,and^chavinggiventhankshebrokethemandgavethemtothedisciples,andthedisciplesgavethemtothecrowds.37 And^dtheyallateandweresatisfied.Andtheytookupsevenbasketsfullofthebrokenpiecesleftover.38 Thosewhoatewerefourthousandmen,besideswomenandchildren.39 Andaftersendingawaythecrowds,hegotintotheboatandwenttotheregionof^eMagadan.

16 ^fAndthePhariseesandSadduceescame,and^gtotesthim^htheyaskedhimtoshowthemⁱasignfromheaven.2 Heansweredthem,^1j“Whenitisevening,yousay,‘Itwillbefairweather,fortheskyisred.’3 Andinthemorning,‘Itwillbestormytoday,fortheskyisredandthreatening.’^kYouknowhowtointerprettheappearanceofthesky,butyoucannotinterpret^lthesignsofthetimes.4 ^mAnevilandadulterousgenerationseeksforasign,butnosignwillbegiventoitexceptthesignofJonah.”Soⁿheleftthemanddeparted.

The Leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees

5 Whenthedisciplesreachedtheotherside,theyhadforgottentobringanybread.6 Jesussaidtothem,“Watchand^obewareof^ptheleavenofthePhariseesandSadducees.”7 Andtheybegandiscussingitamongthemselves,saying,“Webroughtnobread.”8 But^qJesus,awareofthis,said,^r“Oyouoflittlefaith,whyareyoudiscussingamongyourselvesthefactthatyouhavenobread?9 ^sDoyounotyetperceive?Doyounotremember^tthefiveloavesforthefivethousand,andhowmanybasketsyougathered?10 Or^uthesevenloavesforthefourthousand,andhowmanybasketsyougathered?11 HowisitthatyoufailtounderstandthatIdidnotspeakaboutbread?^oBewareoftheleavenofthePhariseesandSadducees.”12 ^vThentheyunderstoodthathedidnottellthemtobewareoftheleavenofbread,butof^wtheteachingofthePhariseesandSadducees.

Peter Confesses Jesus as the Christ

13 ^xNowwhenJesuscameintothedistrictofCaesareaPhilippi,heaskedhisdisciples,“WhodopeoplesaythattheSonofManis?”14 Andtheysaid,“Somesay^yJohntheBaptist,otherssay^zElijah,andothersJeremiahoroneoftheprophets.”15 Hesaidtothem,“ButwhodoyousaythatIam?”16 SimonPeterreplied,^a“Youare^btheChrist,^ctheSonof^dthelivingGod.”17 AndJesusansweredhim,^e“Blessedareyou,^fSimonBar-Jonah!For^gfleshandbloodhasnotrevealedthistoyou,^hbutmyFatherwhoisinheaven.18 AndItellyou,ⁱyouarePeter,and^jonthisrock²Iwillbuildmychurch,and^kthegatesof^lhell³shallnotprevailagainstit.19 Iwillgiveyou^mthekeysofthekingdomofheaven,andⁿwhateveryoubindonearthshallbeboundinheaven,andwhateveryoulooseonearthshallbeloosed⁴inheaven.”20 ^oThenhestrictlychargedthedisciplestotellnoonethathewastheChrist.

Jesus Foretells His Death and Resurrection

21 ^pFromthattimeJesusbegantoshowhisdisciplesthat^qhemustgotoJerusalemand^rsuffermanythingsfromtheeldersandchiefpriestsandscribes,andbekilled,andon^sthethirddayberaised.22 AndPetertookhimasideandbegantorebukehim,saying,“Farbeitfromyou,Lord!⁵Thisshallneverhappentoyou.”23 ButheturnedandsaidtoPeter,^t“Getbehindme,Satan!Youare^uahindrance⁶tome.Foryou^varenotsettingyourmindonthethingsofGod,butonthethingsofman.”

Take Up Your Cross and Follow Jesus

24 ThenJesustoldhisdisciples,“Ifanyonewouldcomeafterme,lethim^wdenyhimselfand^xtakeuphiscrossandfollowme.25 For^xwhoeverwouldsavehislife⁷willloseit,butwhoeverloseshislifeformysakewillfindit.26 For^ywhatwillitprofitamanifhegainsthewholeworldandforfeitshissoul?Or^zwhatshallamangiveinreturnforhissoul?27 ^aFortheSonofManisgoingtocomewith^bhisangelsinthegloryofhisFather,and^cthenhewillrepayeachpersonaccordingtowhathehasdone.28 Truly,Isaytoyou,therearesomestandingherewhowillnot^dtastedeath^euntiltheyseetheSonofMan^fcominginhiskingdom.”

The Transfiguration

17 ^gAndaftersixdaysJesustookwithhim^hPeterandJames,andJohnhisbrother,andledthemupahighmountainbythemselves.2 Andhewasⁱtransfiguredbeforethem,and^jhisfaceshonelikethesun,and^khisclothesbecamewhiteaslight.3 Andbehold,thereappearedtothemMosesandElijah,talkingwithhim.4 AndPetersaidtoJesus,“Lord,itisgoodthatwearehere.Ifyouwish,Iwillmakethreetentshere,oneforyouandoneforMosesandonefor^lElijah.”5 Hewasstillspeakingwhen,behold,^mabrightcloudovershadowedthem,and^mavoicefromthecloudsaid,ⁿ“ThisismybelovedSon,¹withwhomIamwellpleased;^olistentohim.”6 When^pthedisciplesheardthis,^qtheyfellontheirfacesandwereterrified.7 ButJesuscameand^rtouchedthem,saying,“Rise,and^shavenofear.”8 Andwhentheylifteduptheireyes,theysawnoonebutJesusonly.

9 ^tAndastheywerecomingdownthemountain,Jesuscommandedthem,^u“Tellnoonethevision,untiltheSonofManisraisedfromthedead.”10 Andthedisciplesaskedhim,“Thenwhydothescribessay^vthatfirstElijahmustcome?”11 Heanswered,“Elijahdoescome,and^whewillrestoreallthings.12 ButItellyouthatElijahhasalreadycome,andtheydidnotrecognizehim,but^xdidtohimwhatevertheypleased.^ySoalsotheSonofManwillcertainlysufferattheirhands.”13 ^zThenthedisciplesunderstoodthathewasspeakingtothemofJohntheBaptist.

Jesus Heals a Boy with a Demon

14 ^aAndwhentheycametothecrowd,amancameuptohimand,kneelingbeforehim,15 said,“Lord,havemercyonmyson,forhehas^bseizuresandhesuffersterribly.Foroftenhefallsintothefire,andoftenintothewater.16 AndIbroughthimtoyourdisciples,and^ctheycouldnothealhim.”17 AndJesusanswered,“Ofaithlessand^dtwistedgeneration,howlongamItobewithyou?^eHowlongamItobearwithyou?Bringhimheretome.”18 AndJesus^frebukedthedemon,²andit³cameoutofhim,and^gtheboywashealedinstantly.⁴19 ThenthedisciplescametoJesusprivatelyandsaid,“Whycouldwenotcastitout?”20 Hesaidtothem,^h“Becauseofyourlittlefaith.Forⁱtruly,Isaytoyou,^jifyouhavefaithlikeagrainofmustardseed,^kyouwillsaytothismountain,‘Movefromheretothere,’anditwillmove,and^lnothingwillbeimpossibleforyou.”⁵

22 ^mAstheyweregathering⁶inGalilee,Jesussaidtothem,“TheSonofManisabouttobedeliveredintothehandsofmen,23 andtheywillkillhim,andhewillberaisedonⁿthethirdday.”Andtheyweregreatlydistressed.

The Temple Tax

24 ^oWhentheycametoCapernaum,thecollectorsof^pthetwo-drachmataxwentuptoPeterandsaid,“Doesyourteachernotpaythetax?”25 Hesaid,“Yes.”Andwhenhecameintothehouse,Jesusspoketohimfirst,saying,^q“Whatdoyouthink,Simon?Fromwhomdokingsoftheearthtaketollor^rtax?Fromtheirsonsorfromothers?”26 Andwhenhesaid,“Fromothers,”Jesussaidtohim,“Thenthesonsarefree.27 However,nottogiveoffensetothem,gototheseaandcastahookandtakethefirstfishthatcomesup,andwhenyouopenitsmouthyouwillfindashekel.⁷Takethatandgiveittothemformeandforyourself.”

Who Is the Greatest?

18 ^tAtthattimethedisciplescametoJesus,saying,“Whoisthegreatestinthekingdomofheaven?”2 Andcallingtohimachild,heputhiminthemidstofthem3 andsaid,“Truly,Isaytoyou,unlessyou^uturnand^vbecomelikechildren,you^wwillneverenterthekingdomofheaven.4 ^xWhoeverhumbleshimselflikethischildisthe^wgreatestinthekingdomofheaven.

5 ^y“Whoeverreceivesonesuchchildinmynamereceivesme,6 but^zwhoevercausesoneofthese^alittleoneswhobelieveinmetosin,¹itwouldbebetterforhimtohaveagreatmillstonefastenedaroundhisneckandtobedrownedinthedepthofthesea.

Temptations to Sin

7 “Woetotheworldfor^btemptationstosin!^2cForitisnecessarythattemptationscome,^dbutwoetotheonebywhomthetemptationcomes!8 ^eAndifyourhandoryourfootcausesyoutosin,cutitoffandthrowitaway.Itisbetterforyoutoenterlifecrippledorlamethanwithtwohandsortwofeettobethrowninto^ftheeternalfire.9 ^eAndifyoureyecausesyoutosin,tearitoutandthrowitaway.Itisbetterforyoutoenterlifewithoneeyethanwithtwoeyestobethrownintothe^fhell³offire.

The Parable of the Lost Sheep

If Your Brother Sins Against You

15 ^m“Ifyourbrothersinsagainstyou,ⁿgoandtellhimhisfault,betweenyouandhimalone.Ifhelistenstoyou,youhave^ogainedyourbrother.16 Butifhedoesnotlisten,takeoneortwoothersalongwithyou,thateverychargemaybeestablished^pbytheevidenceoftwoorthreewitnesses.17 Ifherefusestolistentothem,^qtellittothechurch.Andifherefusestolisteneventothechurch,^rlethimbetoyouas^saGentileand^sataxcollector.18 Truly,Isaytoyou,^twhateveryoubindonearthshallbeboundinheaven,andwhateveryoulooseonearthshallbeloosed⁶inheaven.19 AgainIsaytoyou,iftwoofyou^uagreeonearthaboutanythingtheyask,^vitwillbedoneforthembymyFatherinheaven.20 Forwheretwoorthreeare^wgatheredinmyname,^xthereamIamongthem.”

21 ThenPetercameupandsaidtohim,“Lord,howoften^ywillmybrothersinagainstme,andIforgivehim?^zAsmanyasseventimes?”22 Jesussaidtohim,“Idonotsaytoyouseventimes,butseventy-seventimes.⁷

23 “Thereforethekingdomofheavenmaybecomparedtoakingwhowished^atosettleaccountswithhisservants.⁸24 Whenhebegantosettle,onewasbroughttohimwhoowedhim^btenthousand^ctalents.⁹25 ^dAndsincehecouldnotpay,hismasterorderedhim^etobesold,withhiswifeand^fchildrenandallthathehad,andpaymenttobemade.26 Sotheservant^10gfellonhisknees,imploringhim,‘Havepatiencewithme,andIwillpayyoueverything.’27 Andoutofpityforhim,themasterofthatservantreleasedhimand^dforgavehimthedebt.28 Butwhenthatsameservantwentout,hefoundoneofhisfellowservantswhoowedhimahundred^hdenarii,¹¹andseizinghim,hebegantochokehim,saying,‘Paywhatyouowe.’29 Sohisfellowservantfelldownandpleadedwithhim,‘Havepatiencewithme,andIwillpayyou.’30 Herefusedandwentandputhiminprisonuntilheshouldpaythedebt.31 Whenhisfellowservantssawwhathadtakenplace,theyweregreatlydistressed,andtheywentandreportedtotheirmasterallthathadtakenplace.32 Thenhismastersummonedhimandsaidtohim,‘Youwickedservant!Iforgaveyouallthatdebtbecauseyoupleadedwithme.33 ⁱAndshouldnotyouhavehadmercyonyourfellowservant,asIhadmercyonyou?’34 ^jAndinangerhismasterdeliveredhimtothejailers,^12kuntilheshouldpayallhisdebt.35 ^lSoalsomyheavenlyFatherwilldotoeveryoneofyou,ifyoudonotforgiveyourbrother^mfromyourheart.”
