2 “Andnow,^yOpriests,^zthiscommandisforyou.2 ^aIfyouwillnotlisten,ifyouwillnottakeittohearttogivehonortomyname,saystheLordofhosts,thenIwillsend^bthecurseuponyouandIwillcurse^cyourblessings.Indeed,Ihavealreadycursedthem,becauseyoudonotlayittoheart.3 Behold,^dIwillrebukeyouroffspring,¹and^espreaddungonyourfaces,the^fdungofyourofferings,andyoushallbetakenawaywithit.²4 SoshallyouknowthatIhavesent^gthiscommandtoyou,that^hmycovenantwithLevimaystand,saystheLordofhosts.5 Mycovenantwithhimwasoneoflifeandⁱpeace,andIgavethemtohim.^jItwasacovenantoffear,andhefearedme.Hestoodinaweofmyname.6 ^kTrueinstruction³wasinhismouth,andnowrongwasfoundonhislips.Hewalkedwithmeinpeaceanduprightness,andhe^lturnedmanyfrominiquity.7 For^mthelipsofapriestshouldguardknowledge,andpeople⁴shouldseekinstructionfromhismouth,forheisthemessengeroftheLordofhosts.8 Butyouhaveturnedasidefromtheway.ⁿYouhavecausedmanytostumblebyyourinstruction.Youhavecorrupted^othecovenantofLevi,saystheLordofhosts,9 andso^pImakeyoudespisedandabasedbeforeallthepeople,inasmuchasyoudonotkeepmywaysbut^qshowpartialityinyourinstruction.”

Judah Profaned the Covenant

10 Havewenotall^roneFather?Hasnot^soneGodcreatedus?Whythenarewe^tfaithlesstooneanother,profaningthecovenantofourfathers?11 Judahhasbeen^tfaithless,andabominationhasbeencommittedinIsraelandinJerusalem.For^uJudahhasprofanedthesanctuaryoftheLord,whichheloves,andhasmarriedthedaughterofaforeigngod.12 MaytheLordcutofffromthetentsofJacobanydescendant⁵ofthemanwhodoesthis,who^vbringsanofferingtotheLordofhosts!

13 Andthissecondthingyoudo.^wYoucovertheLord’saltarwithtears,withweepingandgroaningbecausehenolongerregardstheofferingoracceptsitwithfavorfromyourhand.14 ^xButyousay,“Whydoeshenot?”BecausetheLord^ywaswitnessbetweenyouandthewifeofyouryouth,^ztowhom^tyouhavebeenfaithless,thoughsheisyourcompanionandyourwifebycovenant.15 ^aDidhenotmakethemone,withaportionoftheSpiritintheirunion?⁶AndwhatwastheoneGod⁷seeking?^8bGodlyoffspring.Soguardyourselves⁹inyourspirit,andletnoneofyoube^tfaithlesstothewifeofyouryouth.16 “For^cthemanwhodoesnotlovehiswifebutdivorcesher,¹⁰saystheLord,theGodofIsrael,covers¹¹hisgarmentwithviolence,saystheLordofhosts.Soguardyourselvesinyourspirit,and^tdonotbefaithless.”

The Messenger of theLord

17 ^dYouhaveweariedtheLordwithyourwords.^xButyousay,“Howhaveweweariedhim?”^eBysaying,“EveryonewhodoesevilisgoodinthesightoftheLord,andhedelightsinthem.”Orbyasking,^f“WhereistheGodofjustice?”

3 ^g“Behold,Isend^hmymessenger,andⁱhewillpreparethewaybeforeme.AndtheLord^jwhomyouseekwillsuddenlycometohistemple;and^kthemessengerofthecovenantinwhomyoudelight,behold,heiscoming,saystheLordofhosts.2 But^lwhocanendurethedayofhiscoming,andwhocanstandwhenheappears?For^mheislikearefiner’sfireandlikefullers’soap.3 Hewillsitⁿasarefinerandpurifierofsilver,andhewillpurifythesonsofLeviandrefinethemlikegoldandsilver,andtheywillbring^oofferingsinrighteousnesstotheLord.¹4 ^pThentheofferingofJudahandJerusalemwillbepleasingtotheLordasinthedaysofoldandasinformeryears.

5 “ThenIwilldrawneartoyouforjudgment.Iwillbe^qaswiftwitnessagainstthesorcerers,againsttheadulterers,againstthosewhoswearfalsely,againstthose^rwhooppressthehiredworkerinhiswages,^sthewidowandthefatherless,againstthosewhothrustasidethesojourner,anddonotfearme,saystheLordofhosts.

Robbing God

6 “For^tItheLorddonotchange;^uthereforeyou,OchildrenofJacob,arenotconsumed.7 ^vFromthedaysofyourfathersyouhaveturnedasidefrommystatutesandhavenotkeptthem.^wReturntome,andIwillreturntoyou,saystheLordofhosts.^xButyousay,‘Howshallwereturn?’8 WillmanrobGod?Yetyouarerobbingme.^xButyousay,‘Howhavewerobbedyou?’^yInyourtithesandcontributions.9 ^zYouarecursedwithacurse,foryouarerobbingme,thewholenationofyou.10 ^aBringthefulltitheintothestorehouse,thattheremaybefoodinmyhouse.Andthereby^bputmetothetest,saystheLordofhosts,ifIwillnotopen^cthewindowsofheavenforyouandpourdownforyouablessinguntilthereisnomoreneed.11 Iwillrebuke^dthedevourer²foryou,sothatitwillnotdestroythefruitsofyoursoil,andyourvineinthefieldshallnotfailtobear,saystheLordofhosts.12 Then^eallnationswillcallyoublessed,foryouwillbe^falandofdelight,saystheLordofhosts.

13 ^g“Yourwordshavebeenhardagainstme,saystheLord.^hButyousay,‘Howhavewespokenagainstyou?’14 Youhavesaid,ⁱ‘ItisvaintoserveGod.^jWhatistheprofitofourkeepinghischargeorofwalkingasinmourningbeforetheLordofhosts?15 Andnowwecall^kthearrogantblessed.^kEvildoersnotonlyprosperbut^ltheyputGodtothetestandtheyescape.’”

The Book of Remembrance

16 ThenthosewhofearedtheLord^mspokewithoneanother.TheLordpaidattentionandheardthem,andⁿabookofremembrancewaswrittenbeforehimofthosewhofearedtheLordandesteemedhisname.17 “Theyshallbemine,saystheLordofhosts,^ointhedaywhenImakeup^pmytreasuredpossession,andIwillsparethemasamanspareshissonwhoserveshim.18 Thenoncemoreyoushall^qseethedistinctionbetweentherighteousandthewicked,betweenonewhoservesGodandonewhodoesnotservehim.

The Great Day of theLord

4 “Forbehold,^rthedayiscoming,^sburninglikeanoven,when^tallthearrogantand^tallevildoers^uwillbestubble.Thedaythatiscoming^ushallsetthemablaze,saystheLordofhosts,sothatitwillleavethemneitherrootnorbranch.2 Butforyou^vwhofearmyname,^wthesun^xofrighteousnessshallrise^ywithhealinginitswings.Youshallgoout^zleapinglikecalvesfromthestall.3 Andyoushalltreaddownthewicked,fortheywillbeashesunderthesolesofyourfeet,^aonthedaywhenIact,saystheLordofhosts.

4 ^b“Remember^cthelawofmyservantMoses,thestatutesandrules¹thatIcommandedhimatHorebforallIsrael.

5 ^d“Behold,Iwillsendyou^eElijahtheprophet^fbeforethegreatandawesomedayoftheLordcomes.6 Andhewill^gturntheheartsoffatherstotheirchildrenandtheheartsofchildrentotheirfathers,lestIcomeand^hstrikethelandwithadecreeofutterdestruction.”²

The Birth of Jesus Christ

18 Nowthebirthof^uJesusChrist⁵tookplaceinthisway.^vWhenhismotherMaryhadbeenbetrothed⁶toJoseph,beforetheycametogethershewasfoundtobewithchild^wfromtheHolySpirit.19 AndherhusbandJoseph,beingajustmanandunwilling^xtoputhertoshame,resolvedtodivorceherquietly.20 Butasheconsideredthesethings,behold,^yanangeloftheLordappearedtohiminadream,saying,“Joseph,sonofDavid,donotfeartotakeMaryasyourwife,forthatwhichisconceivedinherisfromtheHolySpirit.21 Shewillbearason,and^zyoushallcallhisnameJesus,^aforhewillsavehispeoplefromtheirsins.”22 ^bAllthistookplace^ctofulfillwhattheLordhadspokenbytheprophet:

(whichmeans,God^fwithus).24 WhenJosephwokefromsleep,hedidastheangeloftheLordcommandedhim:hetookhiswife,25 butknewhernotuntilshehadgivenbirthtoason.And^ghecalledhisnameJesus.

The Visit of the Wise Men

2 Now^hafterJesuswasborninⁱBethlehemofJudea^jinthedaysofHerodtheking,behold,wisemen¹from^ktheeastcametoJerusalem,2 saying,“Whereishewhohasbeenborn^lkingoftheJews?Forwesaw^mhisstarwhenitrose²andhavecometoⁿworshiphim.”3 WhenHerodthekingheardthis,hewastroubled,andallJerusalemwithhim;4 andassemblingallthechiefpriestsandscribesofthepeople,heinquiredofthemwhere^otheChristwastobeborn.5 Theytoldhim,“InBethlehemofJudea,forsoitiswrittenbytheprophet:

7 ThenHerodsummonedthewisemensecretlyandascertainedfromthemwhattimethestarhadappeared.8 AndhesentthemtoBethlehem,saying,“Goandsearchdiligentlyforthechild,andwhenyouhavefoundhim,bringmeword,thatItoomaycomeandworshiphim.”9 Afterlisteningtotheking,theywentontheirway.Andbehold,thestarthattheyhadseenwhenitrosewentbeforethemuntilitcametorestovertheplacewherethechildwas.10 Whentheysawthestar,theyrejoicedexceedinglywithgreatjoy.11 Andgoingintothehouse,theysawthechildwithMaryhismother,andtheyfelldownandworshipedhim.Then,openingtheirtreasures,^rtheyofferedhimgifts,^sgoldand^tfrankincenseand^umyrrh.12 And^vbeingwarned^winadreamnottoreturntoHerod,theydepartedtotheirowncountrybyanotherway.

The Flight to Egypt

13 Nowwhentheyhaddeparted,behold,^xanangeloftheLordappearedtoJosephinadreamandsaid,“Rise,takethechildandhismother,andfleetoEgypt,andremainthereuntilItellyou,forHerodisabouttosearchforthechild,todestroyhim.”14 AndheroseandtookthechildandhismotherbynightanddepartedtoEgypt15 andremainedthereuntilthedeathofHerod.^yThiswastofulfillwhattheLordhadspokenbytheprophet,^z“OutofEgyptIcalledmyson.”

Herod Kills the Children

16 ThenHerod,whenhesawthathehadbeentrickedbythewisemen,becamefurious,andhesentandkilledallthemalechildreninBethlehemandinallthatregionwhoweretwoyearsoldorunder,accordingtothetimethathehadascertainedfromthewisemen.17 ^aThenwasfulfilledwhatwasspokenbytheprophetJeremiah:

The Return to Nazareth

19 ButwhenHeroddied,behold,anangeloftheLordappearedinadreamtoJosephinEgypt,20 saying,“Rise,takethechildandhismotherandgotothelandofIsrael,for^dthosewhosoughtthechild’slifearedead.”21 AndheroseandtookthechildandhismotherandwenttothelandofIsrael.22 ButwhenheheardthatArchelauswasreigningoverJudeainplaceofhisfatherHerod,hewasafraidtogothere,and^ebeingwarnedinadreamhewithdrewtothedistrictofGalilee.23 Andhewentandlivedinacitycalled^fNazareth,^gsothatwhatwasspokenbytheprophetsmightbefulfilled,thathewouldbecalledaNazarene.
